Sakuralionheart | 44 comments Some Kind of Happiness by Claire Legrand is about a girl having to go stay with her estranged grandparents. It's a good book!

Thank you! I was beginning to worry that I wasn't going to get any suggestions.

I read that one already,I just forgot to add it to my list. Thanks again!

Jenna | 581 comments Leota's Garden and Her Mother's Hope and sequel Her Daughter's Dream might fit, as they involve grand-daughters reconnecting with grandmothers (usually estranged due to their mom/grandma not getting along)

A charming and melancholy book.

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 433 comments Brendan Buckley's Universe and Everything in It by Sundee T. Frazier
Ten-year-old Tae Kwon Do blue belt and budding rock hound Brendan Buckley keeps a "Confidential" notebook for his top-secret scientific discoveries. And he's found something totally top secret. The grandpa he's never met, who his mom refuses to talk about or see, is an expert mineral collector and lives nearby! Secretly, Brendan visits Ed DeBose, whose skin is pink, not brown like Brendan's, his dad's, or that of Grampa Clem's, who recently died. Brendan sets out to find the reason behind Ed's absence, but what he discovers can't be explained by science, and now he wishes he'd never found him at all. . . .

Natasha | 250 comments Wingshooters by Nina Revoyr, which is excellent, about a young biracial girl left in her grandfather's care in a small Midwestern town on the verge of having its deep-seated racism challenged. It's as much a story about growing up and navigating imperfect relationships as it is about race.

In the other two books I suggested, the grandchildren in question were still just kids. In this one, he's a grown man who reconnects with his birth parents and meet his traditional grandparents in the process

Jenna | 581 comments Leota's Garden - possibly - though it might be more the grand-daughter finally having a good relationship with grandmother.

Other dulogy by Francine Rivers contain similar themes with grandmother/granddaughter having good relationships (and mother always left out) - Her Mother's Hope & Her Daughter's Dream

message 43: by Karen (new)

Karen | 262 comments The Egypt Game - April's mom leaves her with her grandma and goes off to Hollywood. April idolizes her mom but over the course of the story she starts to realize certain things about life.

Listening for Lions - she grew up in Africa with her missionary parents. When her parents pass away from influenza, she is sent away to her (grumpy) grandfather's house in England.

I haven't read it myself (it's on my TBR) but The Secret Hum of a Daisy fits.

In all three books the grandchildren had never met their grandparents before the start of the story.
