The Egypt Game - April's mom leaves her with her grandma and goes off to Hollywood. April idolizes her mom but over the course of the story she starts to realize certain things about life.

Listening for Lions - she grew up in Africa with her missionary parents. When her parents pass away from influenza, she is sent away to her (grumpy) grandfather's house in England.

I haven't read it myself (it's on my TBR) but The Secret Hum of a Daisy fits.

In all three books the grandchildren had never met their grandparents before the start of the story.
