I just realized yesterday that one of my favorite Tor.com short stories is still up and available, The Witch of Duva. It's a little bit like Hansel and Gretel being told as a dark Russian fairy tale. I highly recommend it, but only if you like them dark. http://www.tor.com/stories/2012/06/th...
In the Greenwood. The pacing and structure lulled me into another place, another time. Exquisite. As the end drew near, I thought I knew what was coming, but I was wrong. I had it backward.
I love it when I'm wrong.
I loved Greenwood as well, especially the reimagined sheriff. I've read a few other Tor short stories that I recommend that are in the fairy tale/folklore genre:The Too-Clever Fox http://www.tor.com/stories/2013/06/th...
Heads Will Roll http://www.tor.com/stories/2012/11/he...
The Walking-Stick Forest http://www.tor.com/stories/2014/05/th... (maybe more dark fantasy generally than folklore specifically, but I really enjoyed it so I'm going to list it here anyway. :) )
I've written GR reviews on the second and third stories, if that's helpful to anyone.
Thanks Tadiana! I've read The Too-Clever Fox and enjoyed it as well, and I've added the other two to my short story list.
