SOLVED. YA novel about boy with amnesia. Talks about piloting planes. Near the ocean. Mentally unstable? "wood" in title? [s]

I read a YA novel around 2001 (I think the book itself might be a few years older) about a boy (around 15-18) who lives near the beach, talks about planes and piloting. Has amnesia but no one will tell him from what, and clearly is an unreliable narrator. I think people start dying and he might be the killer? I keep thinking that the tile has "wood" or "echo" in the title, but can't find anything in a google search. I think the author wrote other YA novels as well.

Any help would be great!
