The book begins with two gay (male) teens, the main character and his boyfriend, who take a photo together, but then the photo gets onto social media.
It turns out that the main character's friend was with a girl and she posted the photo. The main character then tries to commit suicide in the ocean and hits his head on a rock.

He wakes up in a coffin and a run-down town. He eventually finds a few other people who save him from the "caretaker" (or something like that), who is a robot that patrols the city in a van. The caretaker tazes anybody he sees and takes them away.

Eventually, the group of people find out that everybody was voluntarily put into a virtual world until things climate change were fixed but that hadn't happened yet. The reason they all woke up instead of being killed (in real life) was because of the location they were hit. The virtual reality let people breathe and give birth, but still kept them in something like a coma. When they died in the virtual reality, they were killed in real life.

Eventually, the group of people destroy the caretaker but don't know what to do. The book ends with one of the characters going back into the virtual reality.

Ah, I was wondering which book this is. I still haven't read anything by Patrick Ness.
