SOLVED. YA- Boy Finds a Wounded dog in a Frozen Lake [s]

I read this book when I was in high school. Some time between 1995 and 1998. But I think it was older. Don't remember much about it except the start has a boy who is on his own cause his dad is in prison(?). The boy finds a dog crashed thru ice on a lake. After rescuing the dog and the duck that the dog retrieved he finds the dog is wounded. He fixes the dog and the rest of the story is a bout the boy and the dog going duck hunting and fishing.
