~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Would Harry Dresden's staff count on the cover of Dead Beat? He definitely uses it as a weapon.

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Lucky you Josie! I carried Shield of Winter (Psy-Changeling, #13) by Nalini Singh with me this weekend in case Romance was called. No luck. And no weapon unless you count Vasic. LOL.

I think I've decided on Frostbound (The Dark Forgotten, #4) by Sharon Ashwood since it will finish out a series for me. Still looking over my physical bookshelf though, just in case something else hits the right mood.

message 260: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments I'm loving Night Broken (Mercy Thompson, #8) by Patricia Briggs , will probably be finished today - boo! I'm going to try to stretch it out for as long as I can...

@Leslie: Oooh, that's how far I am with Harry Dresden series too - are you reading or listening to them?

@Suzanne: Will be looking forward to your review for that one, Suzanne!

@Daffodil: I'm going to pick up Shield of Winter at the library today - wait ages for one book to become available and three come at once! Haha, Vasic definitely counts as a weapon LOL! ;)

message 261: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Daffodil - wouldn't his arm thing be a weapon and you can clearly see it in the picture.

And I loved it by the way!!

Josie - I'm reading them, though I've heard the narrator is awesome. I am a very very very very slow listener. I have very poor audio abilities - this definitely impacted me in school. I've started listening to books but I tend to stick to romantic suspense.

message 262: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments I wasn't sure if it would count as a weapon. That's okay, I went with Singh's other series instead. I started Archangel's Legion (Guild Hunter, #6) by Nalini Singh this morning and oh boy, what an opener!

I liked that this was set somewhere different (in this case Mongolia). I enjoyed Thalia and the fact that she was not TSTL. I loved that she was able to save herself at the end of the book. I would have liked to have had less staring/watching/looking between Thalia and Gabriel. I also thought Gabriel was too focused on how unconventional Thalia was. The first half of the book was a bit slow going. Once they found the Source it picked up. The end of the book packed a punch and made up for the slow beginning.

Blood Cross (Jane Yellowrock, #2) by Faith Hunter

Read: Blood Cross by Faith Hunter
Rating: *****
Date: 7/17/2014
Review: This book was SO INTENSE!! I was reading this book, minding my own business and following the story as best I could. I got about half-way through and then HOLY CRAP something happens (not telling) and my jaw dropped! I was up until 2am last night trying to finish because I couldn't sleep until I found out what happened. I really got to know Jane and a more intimate level in this book and the dynamic between her and Beast is intriguing. I like that Beast is her own character and she was a lot stronger in this book than the last one.

Archangel's Legion (Guild Hunter, #6) by Nalini Singh Archangel's Legion, Nalini Singh, 7-17-14
Rating: 5 stars
Review: While the Psy-Changeling series will probably always remain my favorite of the two, I have definitely stopped thinking of this as the other Singh series. The last few books have pushed an already 4 star series over the top into 5+ with me.

I love that while each book tells a complete story, they also do a great job of contributing to the overall story arc about the Cascade and the almost inevitable battle between the archangels.

Childhood traumas that could damage a more fragile relationship are instead addressed with love and care by both Raphael and Elena. They have a passionate relationship that continues to grow stronger.

I'll definitely be buying the next one in this series.

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Nice reviews, Daffodil and Suzanne!! I completely agree with what you said about the Archangel series. It took me a couple of books to really get into it, but now I'm completely enthralled.

I will look - so glad we have another week together!!

message 274: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments How much of the head has to be hidden. Does neck and chin showing count?

Tiger Magic (Shifters Unbound, #5) by Jennifer Ashley or I could read Breaking Point (I-Team, #5) by Pamela Clare

message 275: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments The rules say less than 50% of the head showing. Tiger Magic is kind of iffy, but the other looks close. You might go on the main discussion thread and ask, Sandra's fairly quick about getting back with and answer.

Josie | 1967 comments Night Broken (Mercy Thompson, #8) by Patricia Briggs

Title/Author: Night Broken by Patricia Briggs
Date finished: 15th July
Rating: 4.5 stars
Review: This is still one of the best urban fantasy series you can read. There are no boring parts, and the plot is always exciting!

I love Adam and Mercy. Even though Adam's ex came back, (view spoiler) I would've liked to see Adam be more firm with Christy and also with the rest of the pack with their attitude to Mercy. (view spoiler)

I have read reviews regarding the female characters in the series, how bitchy they are, and how the relationships that Mercy has with the males are more meaningful. I would have to agree with this. For me personally, my friendship with girls are much more important in my life, and it's a shame that with a lot of series, this isn't the case. Not all girls are bitches! That's why I took half a star off.

message 285: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (esmerelda1) | 1024 comments Would either of these work?

Gifts (Annals of the Western Shore, #1) by Ursula K. Le Guin Soulless (Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger Long Hard Ride (Rough Riders, #1) by Lorelei James Madame Mirabou's School of Love by Barbara Samuel

I just finished a bunch of books that would've worked for this shelf...

message 286: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Blood, Smoke and Mirrors (Bad Witch #1) by Robyn Bachar
July 21st ***
There were some things I liked and didn't.

What I liked: Cat. She's strong and witty, but most definitely not perfect. I liked that she clearly communicated her issues with Lex. "Is it really so much to ask that just once I be worth sacrificing something for?" I thought it was funny that Portia was addicted to "The Price Is Right" and couldn't figure out how to use the remote.

What I didn't: I disliked how Cat would question why Lex was into her, "but to be honest I'd never understood what he saw in me in the first place." I wasn't crazy about Lex. They were dating when Cat used her magic in self-defense and Lex TURNED HER IN. He comes back into her life and they get back together way too quickly. The excessive use of sugar, girl, and girly.
"No sugar"
"Thanks, sugar"
"You'll be okay sugar"
"girly glass perfume bottles"
"city girl"
"screamed like a scared little girl"

Then there was this: "Boise? Who wants to go to Boise?" "Nobody, that's why they had seats open!"
*shakes fist* Don't knock my city!

Review: Singh managed to surprise me again. If I had made a guess before starting this book, I would have said Vasic's story would be intense and dark. It had a few of those moments, mainly when it came to fighting the infected and maddened Psy. The relationship developing between Vasic & Ivy was characterized by a joyous sweetness that was wonderful to read, while still managing to address the deep emotional issues too.

Review:
While I really enjoyed this next installment in the Shifters series, there was just something lacking in the writing of this one. A little too much telling and not just letting the story happen. But Tiger was awesome. And even though the insta - mate bond was really instantaneous, I loved the relationship between him and Carly.
