Read: Courting Darkness by Yasmine Galenorn
Rating: ****
Date: 6/2/2014
Review: I enjoy this series, but for some reason this book kinda fell flat for me. There were parts of this story that were supposed to be "dark" (torture scenes) and it just wasn't believable. Not that I was looking for a whole lot of detail, I have no desire to read about that stuff but the entire 2nd half of the book was her getting over being tortured. The torture was only a chapter or two, but it took the whole rest of the book to come to grips with it seemed a little much. The book was a little short to begin with, so maybe after book 10 she's scraping the bottom of the createive barrel and that's all she had at the moment for that character. The series rotates it's POV between three sisters, so the next book will be about the middle sister. Hopefully she'll have something interesting going on.

I LOVED Sugar Queen! Sarah Addison ALlen is one of my favorite all time authors :)

Review: I absolutely loved this book. My only complaint is that the tension between Jack Trent and Mary Chase went on just a tad too long. But other than that, I was totally engrossed in this big, dark (very dark), intense book. Mary and Jack have had an intense love-hate relationship and in this one they are forced to work together to catch a killer. Jack is the ultimate tortured hero and Mary is quite the tortured heroine as well. But when these two finally come together (finally!!) it is amazing and lovely and heart pounding sexy. The storyline is intense and gripping and the world that Callihan has created is amazing. Can't wait for the next one to come out!

Still don't know what I'm reading for this week. I know what I should be reading -

Excellent continuation of a series I really like. One thing I like about Lily is she is able to rescue herself most of the time. Granted, she doesn't always make the best decision (oh like confronting the individuals that broke into her store instead of calling the police), but she is more than capable of taking care of herself.
One of my annoyances though, is while she has become friends with a core group of people, she doesn't trust them. I would have liked to see more trust (and sharing with them the murder, etc) on her part. They have proved to be open minded and supportive, both concepts Lily needs and is unfamiliar with given her history. Speaking of her history, a little more is learned. Not much, but a morsel.
I didn't understand her loyalty to her dad given their history.
Oscar continues to be hilarious and one of my favorite characters. I am very happy a certain someone is back in Lily's life having left abruptly in the last book.
Lastly, this is one of my favorite quotes from the book given some of the recent happenings here in the US: "Why is it that so often, it's the most fortunate of the world who feel sorry for themselves?"

(any type of supernatural on the cover - fangs, werewolf, werecat, angel/demon wings, zombie, etc)
Whichever supe you pick must be demonstrating their power, no hunky human-looking supes allowed.

Same here, week has been busier than I was expecting!

Sorry for being late checking in, I haven't been home since Thursday. I'm nearly finished with Yellow/Orange cover week, currently 83% so will hopefully finish before going to bed :D

Review: This was an enjoyable read, especially as I liked both the main characters. Whilst neither had huge personalities and will not be particularly memorable, they were both easy to be with (the book switched between POVs) and they had genuinely nice qualities, such as honesty and kindness.
My only issue would be that sometimes I was a bit lost with all the characters - I felt like it was assumed I would know all of the grannies, and their history, as well as the town and the events. Plus, halfway through, I was also confused with all the Monte business and there was too much time spent on the Showdown thing. And finally, when you came to a new chapter, time/events had passed and been brushed over and so you feel like you'd missed out.
Overall though, I wouldn't discount trying some other books in this series.

Though I have just noticed that I'm getting further behind on my yearly challenge (at the moment I've only been reading 1-2 a week) so any brilliant shorts that anyone can recommend would be appreciated - to cheat my way back to being on target lol!

The big bad was well written, enjoyed figuring out what was happening. What made this book enjoyable was Anna. She has quietly gotten strong and assertive and I loved it! I like how Anna and Charles are slowly growing into their relationship.

Review: Michelle Sagara explores the power of words a lot in her series. Her characters are driven by complex motivations. The different races populating her world are fascinating. As in the previous book, this one does not take place on the streets of Elantra or in the fiefs, so some of my favorite characters are still absent. This series is definitely not light fantasy and sometimes requires concentration as Kaylin puzzles through a problem. The reward is well worth it, IMO.
Despite this being the 9th book in the series, #1 published in 2005, less than a year has passed for Kaylin. Taking that into consideration, she has gained some maturity. She still reacts impulsively, without knowing the full situation. She still asks questions, even knowing they are going to irritate the Barrani around her. But, she has gained a visceral understanding of the power of words, True Words, names and True Names. She's able to work this out intellectually and grasp the differences between all of them and how they shape (and unshape) the world around her. Kaylin makes a hard decision toward the end of the book, realizing that undoing a past sorrow would have dire consequences, undoing the person she has become and more.
"No," she told them all. Looking up at the creature, or across at it, she said softly, "Yes, it's what I want. But I also want wings. I want to be beautiful. I want to be strong. I want to be perfect.
"If every wish I ever had, if every fear, could become real, instantly, I would destroy the world."
I'll definitely being buying book 10.

Review: I liked the concept of this book - about 26 years ago the Magic Realm collided with the Human Realm to create a new combined one, where the supernatural mixed with the ordinary. It was a bit underdeveloped as it could've been more rich and three dimensional, if that makes sense.
Also even though we heard a lot about Terak's Clan, we didn't spend much time with them - the Clan was really there for a relationship obstacle.
However, the plot and the characters did keep me interested, and it made for a nice change for Larissa (heroine) to not be a kickass fighter. Whilst naive, she wasn't stupid and made sensible decisions regarding her safety. Also, a gargoyle hero!
Overall, I would look to read the next books in the series.
