I AM LOOKING FOR A BOOK ON.........?
Hi Ahmed,How far back do you wish to research?
Some of my favorite books on early British/French history which you may want to peruse are:
- Simon Schama's "A History of Britain..." series, which begins in 3500 BC (first volume) and will usher the reader through the first and second world wars, concluding in the year 2000 (the third and final volume covers the years 1776 through to the new millennium).
-Neil Oliver's "A History of Ancient Britain"
-the classic "The French Revolution: A History" by Thomas Carlyle
and, for an in-depth account and analysis of the French Wars of Religion (crucial to any study of French history), I highly recommend "The Huguenots" by Geoffrey Treasure.

Hello Rose,Thank you for sharing these book recommendations in response to fellow member, Ahmed.
Just a note about your citations. The format is - book image, author image, author link. So, for example, your citation for "A History of Ancient Britain" would look like this:

Neil OliverPlease take a moment to update your citations by adding the author links.
Thanks and let me know if you need any additional assistance.

Hi Everyone. I am looking for some books on rising of Nazism, on Germany during WWII and Germany after the war, but I would like to know about the German Authors' view. I am interested to know how the German people viewed those times, from a German Author's perspective. Any suggestion?
Hi - I don't know of any of that type but an interesting book about a Nazi in the 1930s is The Good Man of Nanking - the story of John Rabe in Nanking
That's a nice choice, even though it refers to a massacre which occurred in Japan. Actually I'm looking for the German views on what happened in Germany during WWII, as well as on the time the Nazi regime arouse and the Germany post-war times. Thank you.

Hello Maria.
Those are great recommendations.
Many years ago I read the William L. Shirer's book, which is amazing. It was the first book I read on WWII, much of what I know about the War I owe to it.
I am quite interested in "Crimes Unspoken" for it is written by a German writer, which is my focus today.
The "Comming of The Third Reich" has been in my "To Read" shelf from some months ago.
Finally, "Helga" was another interesting recomendation from the Author herself and I have already put it in my "To Read" shelf as well.
Thank you very much.
Paulo thank you for responding to Maria but you must cite the books and author's mentioned - I do see you hit the reply button but better to just post and add the citations at the bottom.

Donald we have citation rules which include the book cover, the word by, author's photo when available and the author's link.

Well there are quite a few.
There is this one:
by Valerie Hansen (no photo)
There is also this one which might be interesting:
by Christopher I. Beckwith (no photo)
Let me know if you like any of these.

Donald, have you reviewed this book (scrolled the first page of the community reviews, didn't see you there) ? Why do you feel deceived ?
Thanks for the responses.@Bentley, I've fixed up the citation. Sorry. The second book looks very much the type of thing I was hoping for. My knowledge of central Asian history has been sketchy and it sounds like that will help to fill it in.
@Dimitri, I didn't do an in-depth review, just a rating. I was looking for a book on the history of the Silk Road and Frankopan's book ended up being a lot more about the subtitle ("A New History of the World") than anything to do with the Silk Road explicitly. The book itself was ok and I finished it, but it wasn't what I was looking for.
Donald much better on the citation - you just have to go back in twice for the author - first for the photo and then for the link which is the author's name in linkable text. You have everything else pitch perfect.
I am glad that the other recommendation might work out.
But remember in 944 when mentioning a book or author each time - we do the citation so that it can be captured by the powerful goodreads software (see white space on right) and all members know what book you are talking about. When you use the citations - your posts are immortalized (smile).

Hello, I am looking on books on two subjects in particular. A book on the Taiping Rebellion and books on the contemporary history of Latin America. In particular, since the 21st century (or the ascent of Chavez and Lula) to now (or as close to now as possible).
I'm looking for books on the world (or at least western) history of credit/debt/money policy. Any help would be appreciated.
Seeking recommendations for books about Spain and its history, culture, and customs. Ideally this would not be centered on war, although I would also be interested in books about the more influential rulers, particularly if any of them were women. Thanks!

I need some help finding a book, please. I read this book a few years ago and would very much like to read it again and likely add to my bookshelf. The book is about a man who is actually Greek but is attending school in Belgium when WWI breaks out. After the war he immigrates to a small town in the American South, where he puts his math skills to work for a train manufacturer. He is accepted by the community and spends his life there, friends with the most powerful and even eventually marrying. However, he is haunted throughout his life by the ghosts of his friends who died in the war. Thanks a lot.

I have an trip to Cambodia and Vietnam coming up at the end of the month, and I've realized to my embarrassment that I know very little of either country (at least prior to the Vietnam War, and even there, I'm sketchy). Any suggestions for succinct histories of either country?I did find A Short History of Cambodia: From Empire to Survival, which looks promising: can anyone here endorse it? But I'm not turning up anything comparable for Vietnam.

I am looking for a fiction novel that is set in ancient rome but i am finding it difficult to find something that i like because every book i see is about, emperors, politics, intrigues, hero's, war, etc
And i was just looking for something NORMAL. Maybe a simple story about someone that lived in rome... just a story where i could learn more about the roman ancient life of the past, their habits, their lives etc.
It doesn't have o be 'exactly' in rome, it could be in any place, but the story has to be related to the romans and roman history and habits.
I am looking for fiction.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Any Fiction Novel about Ancient Rome that you have liked that meets this parameters?
Thanks to anyone that can help

Hi Lorna and Nuno,
I've read lots of books on Roman times but most more or less deal with what you don't want :-)
I suggest you try
Manda Scott
Also interesting:

Wallace Breem
All have heroes / heroines and wars (hard to avoid with Rome / Roman times) but these go beyond that.

Rodrigo,On racism I'd recommend
by
Gregory S. ParksIt features 12 accounts from black men about their encounters and experiences with local law enforcement. The accounts span decades and occur in multiple locations across the United States. The victims have varying occupations and come from various walks of life. They also tell of infractions that are usually not reported (like in one case where police officers had a history of shaking down children in a neighborhood for cash or valuables to avoid a confrontation).
Taken together it is a testament to how widespread the problem really is and just how much work needs to be done to mend the relationship between citizens and those sworn to protect them.
Julia, thank you for your book suggestion for Rodrigo. Your book citation is great. However, when an author's image is not available, just use the link followed by (no photo), like so:

Eric Walter White's "Stravinsky: A Critical Survey, 1882-1946" remains a benchmark treatise on the life, works and environment of the composer.
Stravinsky himself published an autobiography in 1936, appropriately titled "An Autobiography." It resides in the public domain and in print.
