SOLVED. YA Fiction, about a book within a book where the characters have to play out the plot everytime someone reads? [s]

I read this book around 2008, not sure when it was published but it seemed like it was probably published after 2000. It was a series about characters who knew they were inside a book and had to act out their parts everytime someone read it. I think the main character was a princess. Eventually the book gets translated onto the internet and they have to get used to the change? They also find out the author who wrote them is dead so they write her in. The author then writes in her friend (Alice?) because they need someone to do conflict resolution because the characters and author can't agree on the plot. Pretty sure theres a dragon somewhere in there too.
