Joe is in his element during this book and it was really neat to see him be the "go to guy" for a change. I love this series and the depth of these books! There are so many layers, giving the reader so much to consider from a morale and legal standpoint, especially when those come into conflict. C. J. Box is truly a master at writing Mystery/Crime Thrillers with colorful, realistic characters.

I'm so glad you are enjoying them, Vicki! Definitely read them in order as the author has a tendency to build on the series and make changes in Joe's work and family situation. Some of them are real eye openers! I don't know what I'm going to do when I catch up with the series! I may give Ace Atkins' Cork O'Connor series a try since I'm also up-to-date with the Walt Longmire Mysteries by Craig Johnson. Those are amazing books, too!

The Midwife of Hope River by Patricia Harman |★★★★| Sep 24
I really enjoyed this story. Told in 1st person POV, we meet Patience Murphy, a midwife who arrived in rural West Virginia just before the Great Depression. Patience is a fascinating characte with a complex and sometimes heartbreaking past. There are many interesting characters in the little town of Hope River. It's a book about life and death, struggles and joy, courage and learning to trust. The writing is wonderful and makes for a great book to curl up with in front of the fireplace with a hot cup of tea and read away the afternoon. I'm looking foward to the second book!
