Anita Pomerantz | 9288 comments This month's voting was all over the place, and for awhile there, I thought "vampire" was going to snag it, but toward the end, the following tag made a huge run. It was like watching an Olympian charging for the finish:

2013

The PBT administrators would like to specify that in our mind, this tag refers to "books published in 2013". We know some Goodreads folks probably use the tag differently, but if you want to stay within the spirit of the tag, please try to double check to see if your book was first published in that year.

Please share your reading plans and recommendations below!

Remember, for the regular monthly reads, the book can be shelved as 2013 on Goodreads, or be a book that is not yet shelved that way but you feel should be.

To find books to read for this tag, please visit:

Happy reading!!

Jen | 1545 comments Ha, called it! I'm sure I'll find plenty to fit. I was kind of looking forward to the challenge of finding vampire or Christmas books but this is certainly easier

message 4: by Joi (new)

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments Thank you Anita, for posting more helpful links! The generic 2013 shelf is NOT helpful!!

Books I should PROBABLY read because I own them already:
Life After Life
The Husband's Secret
The House Girl

God damnit, The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics is 2013?! I swear this book is haunting me!

message 5: by Charlie (new)

Charlie Ravioli (charlie_ravioli) | 611 comments I have to admit, I was pulling for Vampires, oh well.

I recommend any of the following books (all very different):

Wave
Benediction
Doctor Sleep
I Am Pilgrim

I am going to try to read at least one of the following (please let me know if you recommend any one of them in particular):

The Goldfinch
The Husband's Secret
The Son
The Woman Upstairs
The Luminaries

I'm not all that familiar with your tastes. I liked the Goldfinch but didn't love it. I thought parts of it were overly dramatic (reminiscent of the Sopranos) but overall a pretty solid read. I listened to the audio by David Pittu. If you like audios, I'd recommend doing it that way.

I also really liked (but didn't love) the Luminaries but I think it's a pretty good pick and I think most people who have read it, enjoyed it - thus why I recommended it. I think I gave it 3.5 stars. It's very long. Overall, it was an intelligent and fun book.

Jgrace | 3947 comments This is a list challenge with some of NPR's best books of 2013.
There are some books that don't appear of other lists. They always seem to point out interesting but less known titles.

Thank you! Helpful!

I'm interested in reading:
Life After Life
The Twelve Tribes of Hattie
I just finished Cinder, so I'm also hoping to read Scarlet.
And maybe Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead

I'm reading A Constellation of Vital Phenomena right now, but I'll finish before September begins. I love Marra, but I like Tsar more.

To recommend:
Eleanor & Park I thought was a sweet YA read, certainly quick.
The Husband's Secret is also pretty good.

message 10: by Ladyslott (last edited Aug 23, 2016 02:22PM) (new)

Ladyslott | 1880 comments I've read 40+ books on that Top 200 list Anita linked to above.

Some of my top picks have already been mentioned so here are some different recommendations:

The Cuckoo's Calling - Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling)
Joyland - Stephen King
The Silent Wife -A.S.A. Harrison
Burial Rites - Hannah Kent
NOS4A2 - Joe Hill

In addition if you have read Cinder I do recommend the next book:

Scarlet - Marissa Meyer, if I had known the publication date I might have waited to read it. No that's a lie, I bought it as soon as I finished Cinder and started reading it immediately. I already bought Cress to read on vacation next week - if I can wait that long.

I will probably read the following because I own them:

The Goldfinch - Donna Tartt
The Rosie Project -Graeme Simsion

message 15: by Susie (new)

Susie Phew!!!

I'm really excited about this tag as there are so many 2013 novels on my TBR list, and so many that I adored and recommend.

Some I have in mind for myself are:

Night Film
Americanah
I Am Pilgrim
The Luminaries
The Circle
The Lowland
Sycamore Row
NOS4A2

I ADORED:

The Narrow Road to the Deep North
A Constellation of Vital Phenomena
Burial Rites
The Narrow Road to the Deep North
Life After Life

I also really enjoyed:

The Goldfinch
The Golem and the Jinni
The Rosie Project.

I'm excited about a broad reading tag as I have had quite narrow choices of late. I'm going to go wild!!! I'm nearly at my goal of 60 books this year. This will definitely get me there!

Anita - I think you have read The Goldfinch and asked me after reading it if I had also done so curious for a male perspective on it (I may be misremembering this)...I'm thinking this might be worth my time and attention for this month's tag.

message 17: by Susie (new)

Susie I'd love to hear a male perspective on The Goldfinch too. The audio performance is soooo good, but it's a marathon rather than a sprint!!

message 18: by Anita (last edited Aug 23, 2016 03:00PM) (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9288 comments So of course the one I most want to read, Tenth of December, is one I don't own. Grrrr.

I have some great choices that I already own:

Revenge
Under the Wide and Starry Sky - some lovely PBT person sent me the ARC which I still haven't read. Sigh.
Burial Rites
The Son

Anyone have any thoughts - - pros or cons on those?

In terms of recommendations, I think I'll go with:

The Interestings
and can't leave off And the Mountains Echoed

Oh, and Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness is some interesting non-fiction if you are looking for that . . .

Others I would recommend have already been mentioned!

I am sure you are remembering that correctly, Charlie! Would love your perspective. I had mixed feelings about the book because of a lot of the action sequences in the latter half, and I was definitely curious if a man would perceive them differently than I did. So would definitely love to hear your thoughts - - on the whole book actually, but especially the action!

Lol, I think I'd rather hear your perspective on The Goldfinch than I want to read The Son . . .even though I did hear it was very good, and I think I will like it. I just finished a long book though, and I feel scared to pick up another right now. So if you are close between the two - - go with Goldfinch because I really want to hear what you think. Let's try to read The Son together though . . .keep it on the radar . . .?

I really want to read Lonesome Dove too.

Ha ha, well if you end up going with The Son and Nicole does too, I'm sure I'll give it a shot too!

But rooting for The Goldfinch for you, Charlie!

message 31: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Well, I was kind of hoping for vampires, but I can totally make 2013 work too!

Let's see....in order of my preference, I am going to try and get to one of these:

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
The Son by Philipp Meyer
Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America by Gilbert King

Many of the recommendations I whole-heartedly second, but, for something different, I suggest The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo by Tom Reiss. It won the Pulitzer for general nonfiction in 2013 and I really enjoyed it!

I was completely underwhelmed by Burial Rites, but I'm in the minority. The quote from my review that may apply to you, " I got the feeling Kent wanted us to develop a great deal of sympathy for Agnes, but I never did. I think that 's because Kent chooses rather to tell us of Agnes' life and her hardships rather than show us. "

message 35: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Pope (jenjunum) | 902 comments I will be curious what people think of Americanah. I was reading it for my face to face book club and didn't finish in time for the meeting and just didn't pick it back up. Just felt kind of meh about it. Too many fish in the sea...

message 37: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11702 comments *groan... I have no idea. I didn't check ahead to see what's on the tbr published that year. I was so hoping for either of the others!

message 38: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11702 comments Based on what's been mentioned here, The Goldfinch fits for one of the shelfagories categories, so that's a possibility. But, I may take a look at what I'm already planning to read to see if any were published in 2013. Or, I'll see what else is maybe on my Trim list or other annual challenges that might fit.

message 41: by Jgrace (last edited Aug 23, 2016 05:14PM) (new)

Jgrace | 3947 comments I am often frustrated with Goodreads and I will forever miss Shelfari, but I just realized that I can add publication date to the settings on my book page. This allows me to see what books I read with a 2013 pub date and which books are on my tbr with that pub date. There are 20 (twenty!) books on the tbr with a 2013 publication date. (There are errors if GR doesn't have the date right.) And 17 books that I read that I rated 4 or five stars. Most of the ones that I really liked are already mentioned here.... but here are a few more to consider

The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat by Edward Kelsey Moore
The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat

MaddAddam (MaddAddam, #3) by Margaret Atwood MaddAddam

Hild by Nicola Griffith Hild

Seven for a Secret (Timothy Wilde Mysteries, #2) by Lyndsay Faye Seven for a Secret

Longbourn by Jo Baker Longbourn

I'm thinking of reading
And the Mountains Echoed
My Beloved World

and possibly any of the other 18 on the list.

That took place right here in Central FL. I need to read this one!!

message 44: by Barbara M (new)

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2597 comments I was so sure it was going to be Vampires that I only had a list for that and it wasn't all that easy to build that list! This list went together much more quickly.

Recommend: Eleanor & Park
The Golem and the Jinni

As for what I plan to read - that list is way bigger than I can possibly manage! In no particular order:
Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth
NOS4A2
A Constellation of Vital Phenomena
The Rosie Project
The Husband's Secret
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking
Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America

Two of these are out at the library but I put a hold - if they come in on time, I might be able to give them a try. Two are audio so I can squeeze them in when I don't have time to sit and read.

message 45: by ~*Kim*~ (new)

~*Kim*~ (greenclovers75) As far as recommendations go, I'll recommend

The Storyteller
&
Reconstructing Amelia

As for what I'll read, there are a few on my wish list that I can choose from:

Eleanor & Park
The Program
Orphan Train

message 46: by Becky (new)

Becky Sadly, it doesn't look like I've read any books published in 2013 to recommend. (Tsk tsk.) Fortunately that means I have a plethora of new material to choose from! I'm currently reading a long book, so I'm hoping I'll be able to read one of these for September:

A Constellation of Vital Phenomena
Life After Life
Orphan Train
The Ocean at the End of the Lane

I don't believe I saw any recommendations for Orphan Train. Anyone like that one?

message 47: by Susie (new)

Susie I have had Orphan Train sitting on my eReader for the longest time and something always holds me back.

message 48: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Pope (jenjunum) | 902 comments I liked the Orphan Train! It switches back and forth between "modern" day and the 1930s? 1940s? I prefered the older time period but I really liked the story. Another thing I had no idea even happened until I read a fictionalized account in a book.

I have read it and really enjoyed it at the time, especially the historical storyline, but it wasn't anything spectacular.
