Michael Anyone know how long the series will go?

Erma Jo Diana said there definitely will be a book 9.

Peggy Frede Ahhh! The perfect summer read! I can't wait to find out what's going on in that parallel historical universe!

message 4: by Kris (new)

Kris I feel much better now. I'd been dreading reading this book, because I absolutely HATE it when a beloved series ends.

David She's been saying at least one more book since Fiery Cross!
If there's plenty of life left in the series, she can write as many as she wants I reckon. But, she wont live forever!
She's 62 now and 1 book every 4 years or so, and healthy living, she could drop at least another 4 or 5 easily!
Then Sam can take over! lol

ED As long as she ties up everything nicely, I will be happy. I would like it if Lord John would find someone special as well. :)

message 7: by Yelowdukk (new) - added it

Yelowdukk I won't spoil the end but if she left it at this it would be a pretty unfair teaser. My reaction was literally like "Noooooo.....".

LOL, exactly opposite to my reaction - "Yes!! they made it" :)

William z what a two week reading, finally finished it.

Ending doesn't imply there will be another one though. I feel it completed:)

Amanda H Diana has made it v clear on twitter that there is a book nine.

Shawn Bird Diana also has said that book nine won't necessarily be the last book either. So we may have a tenth or eleventh or... :-) Jamie and Claire are getting a little old for too many more adventures, though.

In MOBY (set in 1778) Jamie is 57 (born 1721) and since Claire is 3 years older than him, she's 60. That likely makes them the world's 'sexiest literary senior citizens.' :-)

Shaye There are a lot of possibilities for additional books. We still don't know how Roger's visit to the past will affect the chain of events leading to Jaime and Claire meeting. We could get a whole new story of how they meet. It will go back to the philosphical discussion Jaime and Roger had when Jaime was bitten by the snake. Is it possible to change anything or is all predestined? :) If it did change something in Jaime's future, how would that affect Claire's journey after she goes through the stones?

Sherri As much as I've loved these tomes, I half thought this was the last one and I was good with that. We've spent so much time with Claire & Jaime that I could happily let them end out their lives on Fraser's Ridge. But now, we still have the Percy Beauchamp mystery, Ben who is missing and the supposed wife that William is tracking down as well as the never ending backdrop of unrest and civil war. I feel like we know Jaime so well that we know how he approaches any conflict and you can guarantee that there will be some weird medical procedure that Claire has to do. Perhaps future stories could shift to focus more on the young ones - Ian, William, etc.

Yes, I'd love to hear more about Ian and Rachel who I really came to love in this last book. Great couple.

Mrsbooks I can't wait for Roger and Buck to meet Jenny now!!

I don't see how Diana could end this series in another novel. I think it will take 3 more at the slow rate that the stories progress. Maybe if she skips a bunch of years?

Anne Thornton Do you remember about Brianna reading in the letters about Ian's death whist they were trying to find young Jem. Just a brief mention- so there has to be story there.

Faith Williamson Anne wrote: "Do you remember about Brianna reading in the letters about Ian's death whist they were trying to find young Jem. Just a brief mention- so there has to be story there."

Forgot about that! Definitely a story!

message 18: by Faith (new)

Faith Williamson The last thing I remember reading about how many books would be in the series was that there would be a 9th book and a prequel about Jamie's parents. I would really love to read that!

I'm happy to keep reading as long as she keeps writing but I don't know how much more story they have in their lives.

Mrsbooks Anne wrote: "Do you remember about Brianna reading in the letters about Ian's death whist they were trying to find young Jem. Just a brief mention- so there has to be story there."

I thought the mention in regards to Ian's death was about Jenny's husband Ian, rather than young Ian.

Annie Shawn wrote: "Diana also has said that book nine won't necessarily be the last book either. So we may have a tenth or eleventh or... :-) Jamie and Claire are getting a little old for too many more adventures,..."

I'm 62 and my 'Jamie' is 65 and we definitely don't feel like senior citizens! ;)

Aye, that meant Ian senior.

Brizo How about a ninth book where Jamie and Claire figure out how to go forward in time too, and Claire takes Jamie into the future somewhere. That could be an interesting ninth book...

Chris "How about a ninth book where Jamie and Claire figure out how to go forward in time too, and Claire takes Jamie into the future"

That is the book I've been hoping for since Brianna tried to imagine Jaime driving down the road wearing a three piece suit. (I think that was in Fiery Cross)

Linda Diana has definitely said that Jamie will not travel to the future... and I, for one, am glad. No three-piece suits for Jamie... I think he looks verra fine in his kilt.

Mrsbooks Linda wrote: "Diana has definitely said that Jamie will not travel to the future... and I, for one, am glad. No three-piece suits for Jamie... I think he looks verra fine in his kilt."

Jamie would be weak in the future and no longer a leader of men. I would hate to see him that way. So I too am glad Diana will never take him there.

I thought that too, for a while, but was relieved that it was the older Ian, who was the subject in question! But we already knew he was ill.

Damn! I thought that was the last book! I accepted the endings, as they seemed, though I wished it could go on!

Tessa As much as I hope the next one would be the last book, I don't think it will be either. Is the comment from Gabadaldon that the last book would end in the 1800 true (& if so, does anyone have a link)? if it is true; atleast 20 years to go. No way she can end that in one more book.

Dont get me wrong, I love the books and I will keep reading for as long as she publishes them but I hate having to wait on books, especially if someone takes this goddamn long to write them... The ending left me with a stupid grin on my face and my impatient little heart wished it would have taken me a few years longer before discovering this series.

Its on the FAQ page of her website, which seems to be down at the moment as I cant access it.

Tessa Thank you!

Vikki Vaught Claire is about 5 years older. Jamie was 23 and Claire turned 28 shortly after they got together, I think.

I would love to see more of William's story. There is a lot there to be developed.

Diane there is a lot Of William to be developed but I just don't care about that at this point. I would love more Ian and am glad he is becoming a major part of the story line.

Phyllis I have read my way through 7 books and half way through book 8 in about 3 months. I truly enjoy many aspects of the books: multiple female heroes who initiate actions rather than passively waiting to be acted upon, male heroes who appear to live interesting lives unburdened by hygiene, unbelievable coincidences and plot twists, and historical names and places that are based on real events and people. BUT.. having read about 7,000 pages or more, I am troubled by the author's dismissive treatment of the very few Jewish characters (missed opportunities here for example for the Jewish patriot who financed the Revolutionary War only to die penniless since he never was paid back), her use of kidnapping and rescue over and over again as plot themes, among other issues. But I continue to read, amazed at the stamina of two main characters who are close to my own advanced age!

Penny I spent the most of 2014 reading the whole series back to back and loved every minute of it!
I think there definitely has to be another book, there are too many issues to sort out.

Angela I hope there is NEVER a last book!!! Love this series so much. These characters have been a part of me since the early 90's, can't imagine their story ending!!! It will be like a death in the family!

Diane I would like to see closure for the characters at some point (but not quite yet) I think the story would just get to the point of dragging on, if they kept going, which would make the series much less meaningful. Unfortunately at some point Diana Gabaldon's story will end and I would hate for somebody else to write "her story".

It is like Robert Jordan knowing he was dying and chose Brandon Sanderson to finish his series to do it justice. He had a hand in it but I can't see that working for DG.

Persis Menon This story is no where near finished. With so many lose ends it would be a shame to close the series now. I just wish DG would write a bit faster! Each book is almost 4 years apart! It would be a life time before we heard the end of it!

Yes and I want to know how

She has already shown a couple of excerpts from her book 9 writing. While I am a big fan of this series I wonder has she ever wrote anything unrelated to this? And I don't mean Lord John.
