SOLVED. MG/YA Medieval Coming of Age boy that has Druids and he becomes literate in a cave? [s]

Would love to rediscover this MG/YA Medieval series about a boy (15-16?), coming-of-age. I read it in the 1990s, and believe it was fairly new. The details I recall are a boy, there is a castle, but the main plot point I recall is that he gets trained by a Druid in a cave to read Latin/write, and also fight. I know that's super vague, but I would REALLY love to rediscover this book. Any help would be awesome. Thanks!
