Everyone seems to love reading in summer. It speeds us on, the combination of sunshine and a good book. We often put off the books we really want to read so we can enjoy them in the summer.

I thought it would be a good idea to have people post a list of books they really want to read over the summer months? Ones that we can really dig in to!

I have like 3 and a half months off school, before I go to university, so I have an insane amount of time to read!

What books do you want to read this Summer?

What books do I want to read this summer? Only ALL OF THEM. *sigh*

I need to fill in some major gaps in my literary education this summer. James Joyce, Marcel Proust, Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann, Anthony Trollope, some of the old Greek playwrights, more of the Russians... gah! Not to mention all the books that I own and haven't read yet, and more at the library that will undoubtedly be calling my name, and who knows what else I'll find along the way!

Can I just have a meltdown now and get it over with?

message 6: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bd200789) Faye, I have the same problem. I have so many books to read, and I keep buying more. I need to read some more classics this summer, but I don't know what to choose.
I read the Chronicles of Barset series by Anthony Trollope last year an really enjoyed it.I think The Warden is a good place to start with him. It's the first in the series, and it's shorter than the others.

Exactly! I feel like I need to read all the books I already own before I can justify buying more, but dangit, I want more NOW. :P

I will definitely start with The Warden. I got Barchester Towers from my library a while back, but it kept referring to events from the previous book, so I quit reading it. Sadly, my library doesn't have The Warden! Imagine not having the first book of a series? Oy...

message 8: by Roseanne (new)

Roseanne | 1239 comments I have the same problem too! Right now there is two stacks of physical books next to my night stand. They were given to me so how could I turn books away? They are not even on my tbr list and I am still buying books and going to the library! Wouldnt it be nice to just sit around and read all day long? sigh!

message 9: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I only have 1 regular library book right now that I am reading that is due back on sunday plus a book I bought and some ebooks that are read for review requests.

I don't have a Kindle. I'll just order it through inter-library loan, unless I can find it at a used bookstore.

message 12: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bd200789) I never think about inter-library loans. Hopefully, you can find a copy.

message 14: by Joi (new)

Joi | 48 comments I have a long list of books I would like to read during the Summer. Reading is all I do, and I plan to do a lot of it.

They're always a last resort for me, because sometimes they can take weeks to arrive, and once they do arrive they can't be renewed. Too much pressure! :P

But now that we've been talking about it, I just went and ordered it, so we'll see what happens! :)

That last sentence? I suddenly have an intense craving to have that on a t-shirt. Or a Do-Not-Disturb sign. Or both.

Charlotte Street
Gone Girl
The Silkworm
Northanger Abbey
Life After Life

I vowed not to buy any more books until I made my way through my bookcase, but it's impossible. I've had these books (bar two) for months now.

Kassandra | -1 comments I feel like there are just too many books to count all of the ones that I want to read! Hubby and I are trying to book a week off this summer to go away and if that happens, it will be me on a beach with a pile of books at my side. Off the top of my head (there are lots more I'm sure that I will be adding soon), I'll be reading:

Looking for Alaska
Paper Towns
The Kite Runner
The Maze Runner
The Count of Monte Cristo
The Kings of Cool
The Husband's Secret
What the Dog Saw and Other Adventures
The Serpent of Venice: A Novel
The Year of the Flood
Anyone But You: A Modern-Day Spin on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
The MatchmakerThe Book of Joe

message 21: by Laura (new)

Laura | 138 comments War and Peace is my big summer read. I would like to also read a few hiking memoirs and a couple of suspense novels. I also will plan on reading the summer classics that are chosen so that should keep me busy I would say.

I've just updated my post to include more titles (especially for the genre challenges). Only 3 weeks, then my summer technically starts!

message 23: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
I've updated it again! Added way more structue to it!

message 24: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Mason (lmason17) | 174 comments I unfortunately don't get the summer off any more :( so reading will be staying at the same pace I'm afraid!

I am, however, heading away for a week with my old university friends (beach holiday, yay!), so am taking a couple of the beefy Game of Thrones books to get me through.

Oh, My! ... The ADD went into hyperdrive. Between Karen's Awesome Bingo Challenge and "deciding" what I want to read this summer I went a little crazy. There are lists and sub-lists. There was research. And, now, of course, there's a headache. :( When will I learn???

Yes to a Buddy read of My Antonia! It's the third in The Great Plains trilogy and although I'm sure they stand alone, I want to try to read them in order. I'll let you know when I get there.

I think Closer to the start date. I'm in the middle of a bunch of things and want to finish off a few before doing Cather. I'm thinking some time in July. Does that work for you?

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
I'm also really flexible, and on the library/mood plan. It's part of the reason I read more than one book at at time. I'm sorry to hear about your Paris books, I gave up on a couple of things because the wait list was too long. But, there's still half a month left in June, so I hope you can still get in a little Parée.

Librivox has recordings for all three Cather novels, so I'll probably do a combination of listening and reading.
