Bkwmlee | 546 comments I decided to post a review on this book today, even though I had read it last year. Good book overall, though I didn't "love" the book like so many others did.

Me Before You (Me Before You, #1) by Jojo Moyes

Understandable! It actually took me a few dozen pages to "warm" to the story. I didn't put this in the review, but I also felt this book was longer than it really needed to be and some parts were draggy. It's good for a casual read if there's some time to kill but definitely could have been shorter.

That's a lovely review. I'm sure I've read some Maugham, possibly the short stories. It's probably time to correct that.

The film is beautiful, but both main characters remain remote and unknowable.

Thanks, April! This was actually my first time reading Maugham -- I had heard of his autobiographical Of Human Bondage, but it sounded way too deep for me so I never bothered with it. After reading and enjoying The Painted Veil, I am now looking into reading other works by him.

StarMan (thestarman) | 1943 comments Thanks for the recent reviews, Erin and Julia and Bkwmlee :)

I've seen the movie version of "The Painted Veil," and I actually liked it. Edward Norton & Naomi Watts... two talented actors.

I felt the book was just "ok" and definitely didn't pack the emotional punch that it seemed to do for others who read it (based on the reviews I saw on Amazon and Goodreads).

Kelsey I just finished Unmentionable The Victorian Lady's Guide to Sex, Marriage, and Manners by Therese Oneill by Therese Oneill. Here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I found it funny, and I'm sad that it was a relatively short read! I think some of our other Snails might enjoy it, especially those who are enjoying Gone with the Wind!

I will say it's more suited for women, and the author does write in a way that suggest she's talking to a woman, but I would also recommend it for men, for an eye opening experience in privilege, and women's life, in general.

Bkwmlee | 546 comments I just finished reading Lisa See's upcoming novel The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane (scheduled to be published in March). Absolutely loved this book (gave it 5 stars)! I've actually heard alot about Lisa See but never read her books before -- this is my first one and enjoyed it immensely. I'm actually planning on going back and reading her other books at some point.

Loved your review! I've only read a few Stephen King books, but your review has inspired me enough to read this one (if only for the Scooby-Doo references I might pick up.) I've been on a bit of a nostalgic trip lately. Next thing I know I'll be reading the Archie Comics with my cat eye glasses on sipping a milkshake.

message 79: by StarMan (new)

StarMan (thestarman) | 1943 comments Kelsey, I think you'll like Joyland! There were some good scenes, and the groovy 70s are always fun (sadly, no disco in Joyland, though).

Someday I need to read King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and maybe even Hearts In Atlantis.

Enjoy your Archie, Veronica, Betty, and Jughead comics :)

[book:The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
is one of my favorites by King! Highly recommend. It's not too gory or paranormally horror inducing, but it deals a lot with psychological fear, which is my favorite form of horror.

And thank you! Betty and Jughead are my loves lol :)

Thanks, Kelsey! It's definitely a worthwhile read, though quite a bit more tragic than I expected. I enjoyed the book though and was looking to read more from this author, but apparently there isn't much about him. He only wrote 1 other book, also about Greece and set around the same time period (WWII) -- I added it to my TBR already.

StarMan (thestarman) | 1943 comments If you enjoy very light paranormal/vampire YA fare, consider this series:

The Half-Bloods (Braced to Bite) series:
https://www.goodreads.com/series/1085...

Though I am way out of the targeted reading group (in age, and likely gender), I got a kick out the first 2 books. Here are my reviews:

Braced 2 Bite: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Fangs 4 Freaks: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

They seem aimed at the lower end of the YA spectrum (age 13-16, maybe?), but they were a fun escape from some of the heavier stuff I read.

The Areas of My Expertise An Almanac of Complete World Knowledge Compiled with Instructive Annotation and Arranged in Useful Order by John Hodgman

Purposely absurd and mostly dry, but this fictional non-fiction book (yes, I said that correctly) might interest readers who enjoy odder offerings.
