At the same time, I'm really glad that Colleen's mother make the right choice too. Because I have people who are closed to me experienced family violence too. (hide spoiler)]

I just read it and it is true that she writes about very sensitive subjects. So far I've gone in blind when reading her books and have found that it's better that way. But I can understand that it may be hard for certain people to read about certain themes in her books.

I prefer to go in blind. As a reader sometimes I can predict what's going to happen and I like when I'm surprised. I like being blown away, whether its sad or happy.

Wow. I didn't expect this long of a thread on the book! I stayed off this thread until I was done reading so I wouldn't get tempted to hit all the spoiler tags!

(view spoiler)[I have to admit that the only thing I knew about the book was about domestic violence, but was glad for the trigger warning. I connected with Lily as a teenager, having lived through some similar experiences, and some even aimed towards me as a teenager. There are books I can't pick up b/c of the content but I felt removed far enough that this would be ok. But of course, as any reader on any book, I come in with baggage so I'm sure we feel things differently about this one in particular. Having said that, there was a smidgen of a sign in Ryle's behavior early on but didn't come to fruition until later in the story but still stood out as a red flag for me.

Because Atla's story with Lily was revealed parallel to that of Ryle and Lily's (what a great plot device, by the way), I really was rooting for Atlas and Lily. For me, there was no room for her to take back Ryle after all that. That ending was simply inevitable. (hide spoiler)]

I am glad you liked it Grace. lol it was a long thread..we all had a lot to say. I do agree with you (view spoiler)[ I don't remember who mentioned it but they brought up the night Lily met Ryle and he was beating up a chair, and at the time I didn't think much of it. Looking back now it was a sure sign of his violent side. I think the parallel with Atlas was such smart writing, but not surprising where Ms. Hoover is concerned. I very much understand what you're saying and I definitely agree. (view spoiler)[ Later on in the book Lily remembers the chair after one of the incidents. I liked reading Atlas' story and that they ended up together. (hide spoiler)]

And it's definitely a long thread. It's a book we all have a lot to say about.
