Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 333 comments On a whim, my sister and I went to a library we hadn't been to for a while, and I found a used copy of the Brigg's translation of War and Peace. I had borrowed it from the library only to have to return it after getting about a quarter of the way through it. It's the paperback, which is fine for now. I'll purchase the hardcover later if I'm still enamored of this translation once I'm finished. Felt good to cancel the hold on that.

I don't know if the actual reading will be all that happy. No, actually in fact I know that it will be anything but. However, both he and his wife survived the war, so there is a happy ending, of a kind.

There are a surprising number of free pdf files of classics online. We use good pdfs a lot in class. I am sure you know how to use online libraries. There will be books!! We'll hook each other up as much as we can.

We each have times when the money ebbs and flows. I know where some of my books went. There a time just after my third child was born and my oldest was having his second surgery to restore eyesight, sigh, when I sold a good number of my beautiful, classic, hardback books to a used book store to buy some things for the children.

No worries BAM, there will be ways to get books.

Well sometimes selling one or two to buy a new one you really want works too.

BAM doesn’t answer to her real name I'm fairly certain I own both paper and e-copies of many classics. I can part ways with those. And start a book fund jar!

message 1125: by ALLEN (new)

ALLEN | 622 comments Actually I like your credit-card payoff scheme. I got mixed up with them one time, way over my head. The interest and penalties are nothing short of relentless, I'm sure I don't have to say that.

BAM doesn’t answer to her real name Thank you Allen! They have all been cut up and I'm closing them once they are paid off. I'm getting out of this debt hell!

message 1127: by ALLEN (new)

ALLEN | 622 comments You may already know this, but I heard that most credit cards can be paid off totally by paying twice the minimum payment over three years. Paying off only the minimum makes for a very long credit nightmare.

Carol (carolfromnc) BAM wrote: "Thank you Allen! They have all been cut up and I'm closing them once they are paid off. I'm getting out of this debt hell!"

Best wishes to you on this process. Trading books at used bookstores typically gives you better value (20-25% of what they can sell it for) than selling them, where you might only get 10-15% of the resale price, so contemplate any sales before pulling the trigger. Also you get better pricing on individual books than boxes or groups of ten or more.

File under “unasked-for advice “ :)

message 1131: by ALLEN (new)

ALLEN | 622 comments THE BIG SHORT is a very good book. Goes into more detail than the movie could, but it's a very friendly read. Those very, very few personalities who spoke out against the coming CDO collapse ten years ago, weren't listened to, yet learned to exploit mass ignorance and fraud to their advantage are an interesting bunch indeed.

I was lucky. I used to live in a college town. A local bookstore aimed toward students would pay 50% on Hardback classics up to I think $10 each. Also, they would trade books two for one, if you had two to trade in.

BAM doesn’t answer to her real name Sell or trade? Hmmmm I know imma gonna want books

The beauty with classics in a college town is that used book stores don't care if there's highlighting and handwriting galore - they'll still take them from you! (Gawd, I would hate to buy a book for school with someone else's highlighting already in it, but buyer beware, I suppose.)

Good luck BAM! There are lots of ways to find cheap or even free books.

I buy a lot of books used and I try not to pay more than $1 each. Check around for local bookstores and you will find some amazing bargains. Also, you can trade in your old books and pick up some that you haven't read yet.

There are also libraries, which can be awesome. You can look up what books they have online and sometimes they can get inter-library loans of books they don't have.

And there are small "neighborhood libraries" where you can pick up a book and drop another one off. Check it out here: https://littlefreelibrary.org/

And don't forget garage sales and thrift stores, which often have used books at rock bottom prices.

BAM doesn’t answer to her real name I love all the advice y'all i don't feel so despondent now

Apologia Pro Vita Sua by John Henry Newman

The Apologia Pro Vita Sua by Cardinal John Henry Newman

A bit of a departure from my "typical" reading, but then again, that's part of the reason why I ordered it.

I am starting to tailor my reading list to the group bookshelf, plus a couple of others. I have made some purchases from Amazon with my credit card points:

The Secret History by Donna Tartt The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros Peyton Place by Grace Metalious and Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea . Finally, for my Bingo square for Australia The Secret River by Kate Grenville Oh, and bonus!! The Secret History can fill the 500 page Bingo square I still need to fill.

I see you all's convo. I have bought abook that I forgot about sitting on my bookshelf a few days ago wondering at me, asking me if I had forgotten it. Sorry. I did. I remember now.

creepy is kind of a given for Rosemary's Baby though!

I get most books on eBay now, some on Amazon (although default postage tends to make eBay the cheaper)
I "bide my time" though - revisiting both sites every few days and scanning for unusually low-priced editions (plus I'm also quite picky about which cover I want), plus some of the major sellers offer extra discounts if you buy 2, 3, 4 books at once...
a few from charity shops of course

BAM doesn’t answer to her real name I’m stupid and don’t understand how to actually purchase anything on eBay anymore. That sounds like a great resource though

Pillsonista | 362 comments Finally got around to using a gift card I got from my last birthday, and it's a bit a divergence from what I usually go for:

The Complete Orsinia Malafrena / Stories and Songs by Ursula K. Le Guin Hainish Novels & Stories, Vol. 1 Rocannon’s World / Planet of Exile / City of Illusions / The Left Hand of Darkness / The Dispossessed / Stories by Ursula K. Le Guin Hainish Novels & Stories, Vol. 2 The Word for World Is Forest / Stories / Five Ways to Forgiveness / The Telling by Ursula K. Le Guin
The Complete Orsinia and Hainish Novels & Stories, Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 by Ursula K. Le Guin.

I'm not passing up LoAs at 20% off. That's just not going to happen; I don't care who the author is.
