That would be great, Rosemarie, assuming you're interested in a possible buddy-read? Because if you are, then I'm there.

BIG hug Sara...😘! Glad you found the books. Happy reading...

Thank you so much, Kathleen.
And you're exactly right: there is no better way to remember and honor him than this, and there's no better analeptic than the joyful memories it conjures.

That would be awesome, Rosemarie.

Thank you, Loretta. 🤗
I don't know if the actual reading will be all that happy. No, actually in fact I know that it will be anything but. However, both he and his wife survived the war, so there is a happy ending, of a kind.

Love the Shirley Jackson - bought a copy a few years back as an early Christmas present to myself.

That would be awesome, Rosemarie.

Right. I know that. I'm just happy that you found the books and that you're looking forward to reading them. That's what I meant. Poor choice of words. Sorry Sara.

Oh, no apologies necessary, Loretta. My apologies if I came across as offended. I sincerely didn't mean to.

I know Sara! It's all good! 😊

Blindsighted, Moon Tiger, The Counterfeiters, Flowers for Algernon, A Woman of NoteAn Enemy of the People, The Willows.
And I think I spent about $20 ish ?

Fantastic haul there BAM for $20.00!! 🤗

I thought it was just BAM's last book shopping spree this morning?

Gosh I hope so.

There are a surprising number of free pdf files of classics online. We use good pdfs a lot in class. I am sure you know how to use online libraries. There will be books!! We'll hook each other up as much as we can.
We each have times when the money ebbs and flows. I know where some of my books went. There a time just after my third child was born and my oldest was having his second surgery to restore eyesight, sigh, when I sold a good number of my beautiful, classic, hardback books to a used book store to buy some things for the children.
No worries BAM, there will be ways to get books.

Well sometimes selling one or two to buy a new one you really want works too.

Best wishes to you on this process. Trading books at used bookstores typically gives you better value (20-25% of what they can sell it for) than selling them, where you might only get 10-15% of the resale price, so contemplate any sales before pulling the trigger. Also you get better pricing on individual books than boxes or groups of ten or more.
File under “unasked-for advice “ :)

I don't read a lot of non-fiction, but the movie is excellent and the story is so unlikely it seems like fantasy!

I was lucky. I used to live in a college town. A local bookstore aimed toward students would pay 50% on Hardback classics up to I think $10 each. Also, they would trade books two for one, if you had two to trade in.

The beauty with classics in a college town is that used book stores don't care if there's highlighting and handwriting galore - they'll still take them from you! (Gawd, I would hate to buy a book for school with someone else's highlighting already in it, but buyer beware, I suppose.)

The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco
Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende
The Martian by Andy Weir
I had all three in paperback already, but I'll probably donate those to the library.

Good for you! Dollar Tree?

Good luck BAM! There are lots of ways to find cheap or even free books.
I buy a lot of books used and I try not to pay more than $1 each. Check around for local bookstores and you will find some amazing bargains. Also, you can trade in your old books and pick up some that you haven't read yet.
There are also libraries, which can be awesome. You can look up what books they have online and sometimes they can get inter-library loans of books they don't have.
And there are small "neighborhood libraries" where you can pick up a book and drop another one off. Check it out here: https://littlefreelibrary.org/
And don't forget garage sales and thrift stores, which often have used books at rock bottom prices.

The Apologia Pro Vita Sua by Cardinal John Henry Newman
A bit of a departure from my "typical" reading, but then again, that's part of the reason why I ordered it.
I am starting to tailor my reading list to the group bookshelf, plus a couple of others. I have made some purchases from Amazon with my credit card points:
and
. Finally, for my Bingo square for Australia
Oh, and bonus!! The Secret History can fill the 500 page Bingo square I still need to fill.

No, library book sale. The Dollar Tree near me never seems to have anything worthwhile.

I ordered a few new books:
Sassafrass, Cypress and Indigo by Ntozake Shange

To read with another group for UK's black history month
From all the hype, thinking it just might become a New Classic, in time. So excited to read.
The Best of Lewis Carroll

For my 10-year old niece's short stack of books this Christmas
Seeing Voices by Oliver Sacks

Reading for US disability month
Audiologist (just part of ENT, allergist office services) suggested this book as a popular science selection.
I see you all's convo. I have bought abook that I forgot about sitting on my bookshelf a few days ago wondering at me, asking me if I had forgotten it. Sorry. I did. I remember now.

Bit of a creepy cover, but I like it! Where do you usually find all your used/vintage books?

creepy is kind of a given for Rosemary's Baby though!
I get most books on eBay now, some on Amazon (although default postage tends to make eBay the cheaper)
I "bide my time" though - revisiting both sites every few days and scanning for unusually low-priced editions (plus I'm also quite picky about which cover I want), plus some of the major sellers offer extra discounts if you buy 2, 3, 4 books at once...
a few from charity shops of course

27 randomly ordered "pamphlet" chapters! :oD

The Complete Orsinia and Hainish Novels & Stories, Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 by Ursula K. Le Guin.
I'm not passing up LoAs at 20% off. That's just not going to happen; I don't care who the author is.
