Jesse, I moved your request to the Unsolved folder because you're looking for a specific book.

After reading and loving House of Leaves, I started looking for more novels that experimented with their structure. I found one then but now have forgotten it's name and author.
It was notable for coming in a box full of letters out of order, the content of which I can't really say. Except that it was not in chronological order.
So yeah: it was a box with letters bind by string inside. If anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it!

(if you search lists by "experimental" you'll get other lists that may be possibilities, too).
The Unfortunates?
Wikipedia says: "The Unfortunates is an experimental "book in a box" published in 1969 by English author B. S. Johnson and reissued in 2008 by New Directions.[1] The 27 sections are unbound, with a first and last chapter specified. The 25 sections in-between, ranging from a single paragraph to 12 pages in length, are designed to be read in any order."

I've been looking for a book similar to House of Leaves. I came across it months ago but forgot to bookmark it later to purchase.
It's notable for coming in a box, which contains a series of pages out of context and order so you have to piece it all together. It's old, as far as I know. I don't know how old exactly but if I had to guess, I'd say 1980s.
I don't know what the letters are about, I just know that that's part of the experience of this novel, the box and the letters.
Please help, the bookworm in me is going nuts over this mystery!
