I am a bit uncertain of what you mean, Howard. Wouldn't all British royalty be too closely related to marry each other? Would the Queen only consider European royalty as suitable matches for her children and grandchildren? Or non-royal British people would be preferable to non-British royalty? Or only royal houses of certain lengths? I know they had that law about not marrying Catholics and being in the succession. Or is it all non-CoE people that they cannot marry and be in the succession?

They haven't indulged in dynastic marriages for a long time. Remember the Queen has already seen her daughter Ann marry 2 commoners; Edward and Andrew both married commoners a and so did Prince William of course. The Soveriegn is still the head of the Chirch of England as they have been since Henry 8 ; hence the ban on non CofE marriage embodied in the Act of Settlement 1701. Most people think that ban should now be lifted. I think the days of Queen Victoria and dynastic marriages is long, long gone. I think having a monarchy is outdated in the 21st century - but since Elizabeth has no real power and is seen as a unifying Head of State rather than a political player - most of us just accept it. How things will go after the Queen goes - is anyone's guess.

Howard, I am both hurt and offended by that comment. It is such an absurd generalisation and gratuitously offensive. I would never dream of describing all Americans as racist just because there are clearly some who are, so why you feel you can make such an absurd and derogatory generalisation about British People is beyond me.

On the other hand, I just *love* Ben Aaronovitch's fantasy novels staring a black London cop who recognizes some racial problems, but they aren't particularly important. (Ben has a black son). (I have relatives of different cultures and races, but know Americans who have problems with that).

There is an 'unite the right' rally being planned 10 days from now in Charlottesville. A 'biker club' is going to be present to 'provide security.' We will close the library for that day, out of concern for public and employee safety. The library is right next to the park.
Last month there was a klan rally from another state, in the same area, whose members announced in advance that they would be coming armed. And Charlottesville is a very diverse city, a sanctuary city, with a very active IRC office.
We are being cautioned to avoid the area, but I am frightened of what will happen.

That's rather an absurd comment given that Prince Harry is currently dating a mixed race, half black, woman and so far I haven't heard of any rioting in the streets. Sounds like you are , indeed, reading the wrong news stories.

This discussion has gone well off track. If anyone wants to start a new thread about marriage in the British Royal Family, could you start a new thread in the Heyer in General folder.
Thanks.
Edited to fix typo.

Sorry.

Apology accepted! :)

Here's that discussion if you're curious: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Ha! I think that was a bit of tongue in cheek British humour.
Hard to argue about the awfulness of Helen (I didn't read Heyer for years after that one) or My Lord John. The Great Roxhythe isn't a good book, but it's (unintentionally) very funny, so it didn't make my bottom 5.
As a side note, I gave my Heyer loving friend a copy of The GR & she really liked it & didn't see what I found so amusing! :D

I think in her biography, the writer said that Georgette Heyer was an Edwardian.
I wonder what she would think of ..."
There are still loads of Royals around. There are at least 9 European countries which are still monarchies so loads of Royals around in Europe - and that's before you start looking at the Middle East and the rest of the world!
In addition, several former royals - from countries which are no longer monarchies - still use their titles. Italy is a case in point.
