Book: Some Enchanted Éclair (A Magical Bakery Mystery, #4) by Bailey Cates Some Enchanted Éclair(Magical Bakery #4) by Bailey Cates

Rating: ★★★
Finished: July 26

Review:
Katie is asked to replace the caterer for a movie filming in Savannah. Shortly after, the man who hired her is killed, she's replaced by the original caterer and the investigation begins.

It's a slight paranormal twist on the usual cozy food-related mystery. I'm unhappy with the love triangle that seems contrived and often suspect the drama is manufactured at the request of some editor somewhere who thinks love triangles sell books. I like both men and it would be pretty great if the second man would move the heck on and be allowed some happiness that doesn't involve pining after Katie.

Review: Lets just say a gay version of "bodyguard" with a smaller "big" sister and best friend of the bodyguard thrown in. Derick a former Marine is the bodyguard and Heath is a Rocker who is managed by Chloe, Derick's sister. The guard and the rocker has an instalust turned into love. but they try to do the right thing and stay away from each other and again all the relationship drama could have been if not prevent at least has been molehills if they would have communicated to each other. I probably would have given it 5 stars if I hadn't recently read a book that still has me basking in the glow of it.

Daughter of the Blood (The Black Jewels #1) by Anne Bishop
Book: Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop
Reason it fits: The Black Jewels series #1
Finished: July 27th
Rating: ★★★
Review:
This was an interesting book for me. Its basic premise is familiar, a malevolent ruler of a broken society prophesied to be stopped by the one born to great power, but I found the characters and their world quite original. There are very dark and sensitive topics that are dealt with seriously, but at the same time its characters give a sense of innocence and mischief to the story, creating a strange balance that worked for the most part, so that the book as a whole did not seem dark and heavy.
That said, I did feel as though this was a very long introduction to a story, with some farfetched developments, even for fantasy, and passages more dramatic than I would have liked. In general, I’d say this is a good beginning to a series with potential to be great.

review: the book was well written but seemed very unemotional and cold. I had no sympathy for any of the characters. Wish the Author chose another first name for the male villain in the conspiracy. Victor is a very strong medium his new partner is Roger mild-mannered until his role is revealed. Victor Lover is another psycop detective Jacob Marks. He is what is referred to as a stiff a non-psionic that partners with a psionic. It start with Jacob being away at an execution of a murderer he helped put away. Unfortunately his ghost latches onto Jacob and tries to enter Victor who ended up scratching crosses into Jacob. not sure I will go farther in this series.

A Mind to Murder (Adam Dalgliesh, #2) by P.D. James A Mind to Murder
Qualification: Book 2 in Adam Dalgliesh series
Read: July 30
Rating: 4 stars

This is a police procedural written in the early 1960s. Our story starts out with the murder of an administrator at a psychiatric clinic. Dalgliesh is quickly called in and begins the tedious job of digging through office gossip and LSD treatment patients. Yup, this is written in the time of patients being treated using hallucinogenics.

While James does a good job with relatively boring material (not selling it, I know) she doesn't quite do as well as other authors (see the Martin Beck series written in the same decade or Wallander which is more recent, both by Swedish authors). Having read more recent books in this series, they do get better.

Pulling Leather
My Rating: ★★★
Date Finished: 7/31
Final Thoughts:
I liked it. But I was hoping to like it more than I did. I love a good villain turned hero story. Add that to a femme MC and I am all over it. Unfortunately though this was good it wasn't great. In fact it was probably my least favorite of the series. The steam factor was pretty low and I don't think I liked the narrator of the audiobook so I'm sure that didn't help. I didn't hate the narrator but I didn't really like him either so idk...

Review: I absolutely loved this one. So freaking good. I was enchanted from the very beginning. Enjoyed the back and forth between Kate & Curran. Got to see what Kate is more capable of. I really like Jim, and Derek. I teared up about Bran. I rather liked him. I'm disappointed in Red, but he got what he deserved.

Book: This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman
Reason it fits: Starbound series #2
Finished: August 3rd
Rating: ★★★
Review:
One of the first things I realised when reading this book is that it is completely different from the first one; the setting, the characters, the situations… even though they are connected by a very clear point in the storyline, these two books felt truly distinct to me. Now, different is not necessarily bad, but in this case I guess my expectations got in the way and I wanted a little bit more of that mystery of the first book, of the feeling of discovering a whole new world little by little. As for the main characters, this book’s ‘couple’, their connection felt more like a friendship than a romance to me, not that there were crazy declarations of love, but the way they related to one another just seemed closer to that of friends/allies. One good point, to finish up, is that it created interest in how the story is going to end and what Sofía’s role will be, so I’m looking forward to that.

Book Read: The Crucifix Killer (Robert Hunter, #1) by Chris Carter

Review: One of the most cliche mystery thrillers ever. Honestly, this was a big joke to me. Robert Hunter was supposedly a genius child prodigy but his detective skills were mediocre at best. The entire book read like a d-list episode of Law & Order. I really wanted this to be good, so many people have rated highly to me. I'm left pissed off. All I want is a really good mystery/thriller and can't seem to find one.

Erin L (wellreadmoose) | 272 comments I know you're not asking for recommendations and I hardly know you so take these with a grain of salt. I looked at your mystery/thriller bookshelf and the only books we share are the In Death series :)

I really like Tess Gerritsen's Rizzoli & Isles series . She also has some interesting stand alones like Life Support. They are medically based so if you're not interested in that, I'd skip them.

Douglas Preston's Agent Pendergast series is a little strange at times, but interesting.

Other than than, there's the standard Jack Reacher by Lee Child and Lincoln Rhyme by Jeffrey Archer.

But I know what you mean. Sometimes I just want to throw the book at the author and scream at them when the protagonist is a complete idiot.

Tamika♥RBF MOOD♥ | 445 comments Thanks Erin! I've heard alot about the Rizzoli and Isles series. I have the first two and suppose to buddy read it with the group. If only I can find some time.

Never heard of Douglas Preston. I'd have to check it out. I cannot stand the cliche notions in mystery/thriller.

I feel like that gets better in later books, but I read the surgeon waaaaay back in 2010 and made zero comments about it, just a rating. Ooops.
