Allison | 2121 comments Horray for my ultimate girl-crush Carol Off!!! So happy for her. I have a signed copy from when I met her (and babbled on in ridiculous “I’m in love with you” fashion) and hope to get to it this year too!

And what a great freaking prize you posted in your next post, Susan! Could we come up with any to date that could win if they were eligible? Would The Couple Next Door fit the criteria? I don’t read a ton of thrillers.... but it may, I can’t remember. Are there others?

That is a good question Allison! I think I will start reading with that lens to see if any fit that eligibility.

Mj Some good and bad news about the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature:

The bad news is the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize for Literature, which was to have been announced this fall, has been cancelled and the Swedish Academy's reputation tarnished.

The good news is that allegations of sexual misconduct, financial malpractice and repeated leaks are being taken seriously.

See Guardian article below for details:

https://www.theguardian.com/books/201...

Edited to remove the word Peace. Louise's question highlighted the need to correct my posting error.

Louise | 1171 comments Mj wrote: "The bad news is the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize for Literature,.."

Aren't the Nobel Prize for Literature, and the Nobel Peace Prize, two completely different prizes??

message 156: by Mj (last edited May 04, 2018 05:25PM) (new)

Mj @ Louise - good question. Thanks for pointing out that I'd caused some confusion by using the word Peace in my posting. (I have since edited my post and removed the word Peace.)

Overall, the Nobel Prizes awarded are rather confusing because of the different way the prizes in various categories are sometimes described.

The Literature prize is usually described as The Nobel Prize for Literature whereas the Peace prize is often described as The Nobel Peace Prize rather than The Nobel Prize for Peace.

The Nobel Prize itself however is awarded in 6 different categories (not just Peace). It is awarded for Literature, Peace, Medicine (or Physiology), Chemistry, Physics and Economics (a later addition that was not a part of Alfred Nobel's will).

I do think that each prize has its own set of judges however - people who have expertise in the category of each specific prize category.

Thanks MJ! It has been an exciting week and I am excited to take on a new role. The election process was a great learning experience and I look forward to joining the 3 incumbents! It will mean a few less author events for me but I hope to make a positive difference for students!

Elinor | 238 comments I'm stoked that Darrel J. McLeod won the GG's medal for Mamaskatch: A Cree Coming of Age. He deserves it, even if for no other reason than that he survived his childhood -- and for his brutal honesty about his experiences. I had lunch with him once, and found him to be a very charming and intelligent guy.

Mj Breakout Novelist Tommy Orange Wins $25,000 PEN/Hemingway Award for There There in addition to numerous other awards for his novel.

A number of members and other authors have raved about this Debut Novel and it looks like the judges agreed.

Ontario readers - please tweet/email/call your MPPs and let them know Ontarians want #BooksNOTbeer

This government has its’ priorities confused with all the cuts to libraries, education and health yet supports a buck a beer and tailgate parties.

Good morning readers! I am getting a bit political today and need your help! In Ontario, we have a few MPPs and MPs who decided to protest abortion (their own personal views) instead of focusing on women's rights and the views of many of their constituents. I am looking for some reading material to suggest to them such as The Handmaid's Tale, A Spark of Light or The Cider House Rules. Any suggestions?
