Her old love of the historical epic never left her—rife with intrigue, secrets, betrayal, and forbidden love—and she decided to write her own books, exploring themes of existential philosophy and the irrepressible power of women.

When in her twenties, Maia discovered that she was Métis. Her historical novel, Song of Batoche is a love letter to her extended relations of Batoche Métis, women with secrets, and to Louis Riel and Gabriel Dumont, whom she consider

Hi Ian!

Thanks for your question. It's a good one that I've been asked several times now, so I'm going to write a blog post about it and also list the books that I referenced when researching the novel. I’ll post it here when I’m done, probably tomorrow.

Thanks again!

Caitlin Moran
“...it's technically impossible for a woman to argue against feminism. Without feminism you wouldn't be allowed to have a debate on a woman's place in society. You'd be too busy giving birth on the kitchen floor -- biting down on a wooden spoon, so as not to disturb the men's card game -- before going back to hoeing the rutabaga field.”
Caitlin Moran, How to Be a Woman

“English is so hierarchical. In Cree, we don't have animate-inanimate comparisons between things. Animals have souls that are equal to ours. Rocks have souls, trees have souls. Trees are 'who,' not 'what.”
Tomson Highway

“The dead don't hang on, the living do. The dead don't have anything to hang on to. Our bodies become nothing, and we just float around the people who love us. We go back to nothing. That is all we ever were or should ever be.”
Katherena Vermette, The Break

“But even in sleep, her ghosts all hunt her down, wanting her to look at them, remember them.”
