Just casting a net out to see if anyone would be interested in doing a buddy read of The Wise Man's Fear around the middle of this month, 16th'ish? :)

Happy Reading,

Drew (hurricanedaddy) | 35 comments Hey all, I posted in the wrong place yesterday so I am reposting it here.

I've been reading gobs of Dan Abnett titles from the Black Library (www.blacklibrary.com) and it's a shame he's not widely recognized as a force in the SF&F community other than by those who've managed to stumble upon his books, likely because they were tabletop gamers and decided to look into his Warhammer creations.

He's quickly growing in my esteem, ascending the list of authors I can't miss, and I just ordered the first Gaunt's Ghosts Omnibus from www.thriftbooks.com. I've heard spectacular things about this series, and while I'm generally an exclusive epic fantasy reader, Mr. Abnett is an author I'd love to endorse and spread the word about. I just read his Eisenhorn Omnibus and it was, when taken as one volume (it's actually 5 connecting stories--3 novels and 2 short stories--gathered into one volume), an excellent read that I wish I had buddied with someone for. I can tell you that the story is very sci-fi light, and very character-driven. I know some people are kind of frightened by the genre of sci-fi, myself being one of them, but this is essentially fantasy told through an investigative series of planets with sci-fi settings.

Anyway, let me get to the point. I'm posting to find out if anyone would be interested in buddying at some point for a read of Gaunt's Ghosts: The Founding by Dan Abnett. It's a collection of the first three stories in the Gaunt's Ghosts catalog. I think there are something like 14 books in total. I'm excited to read it and I think it would be really fun to buddy read but I want to find out if there is any interest at all. Looking at early September as a start time. Thanks all.

Hmm I've heard of Warhammer and that its a tabetop game and that's it (I'm young give me a break) but this sounds very interesting since I want to get into it and this Warhammer mythos although I'm booked up for early September so maybe a bit later for me but like I said I'm interested to see what this Warhammer universe is like

I think you will be impressed. I have never actually played the tabletop game, although I have made and painted some miniatures and purchased a couple of their RPG books, and I could not be more impressed with their novels.
I started with the Horus Heresy Humble Bundle that was available earlier this year or last year some time. Those are from the Warhammer universe (set 10,000 years before 40K.. so.. 30K?) and are so interesting. So far I have read 4 of those and 4 novels in the current universe. Just know, it is a big endeavor if you get hooked. There are something like 45 Horus Heresy books and counting, and more 40K books than I could begin to catalog. A quick google search for "Warhammer reading order" should yield some interesting suggestions about where to begin, although there is no real established order. Anyway, I'm rambling, but the books I have read have been very high quality and satisfied the epic fantasy (but in the future.. on various planets) itch within, particularly the omnibus editions with gather the full spectrum in one volume (and there are dozens of omnibus titles available in the Black Library). I hope you join us. We could perhaps aim for mid-September if that is the general consensus. Best regards.

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Wow I've never realised how big the world is and I've seen some of the warhammer books in the bookstore so I'll have to see what there like but since I found out that there is no real order and different writers adding in stuff then I'll start with this series and if I like the first couple of books then I'll consider having a look at Horus heresy as well since a lot of them consider it good starts or so I see

I need to research this thing as well because this is so big and unfortunately I have no friends meaning playing the game is out of the question and even so I've played some card games and I SUCK SO BAD hahaha but yeah I'll definitely join maybe then I'll figure out what the hell is with this universe hahaha

Ha! I know what you mean! I am atrocious at strategy games. That's why I enjoy RPGs -- you're on a team, no real way to lose, etc. -- and spend more time reading than anything else. I used to actually be kinda jealous at how people could throw themselves into video games... they seemed to be having so much fun!... but then I realized that that is just not my thing. Reading is my thing and when I need that gaming fix, tabletop gaming is my go-to. Even that is only 8 or 9 times a year.
Man I am glad you are going to dive into the Warhammer universe! You think you could do mid-September for Gaunt's Ghosts: The Founding?

As for Horus Heresy, I have heard both sides of the argument.. some say you gotta read the 40K stuff for a while and then go back and read the "history" so to speak, the Horus Heresy series, since that is kind of the big turning point in the Warhammer mythos. I had no idea what I was doing and I just dove right in to the Horus Heresy before ever reading anything set in the "modern" 40K universe and I don't feel that I missed out on any of the experience of it all, so I think it really just has to do with what you find and what interests you. One non-negotiable I would say is to read something by Dan Abnett first, whether it be Horus Rising, Eisenhorn, or something else. He has written the most, and he seems to be the guy the Black Library turns to when they want to kick off a major event or whatever. He's a really good author. Highly recommended and I am excited for some Gaunt's Ghosts.

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Cool yeah mid to late will do for me I can only do a date after the 20th but if you want to do mid then I can catch up to you guys on a letter date but yeah we'll see how it goes and I'm definitely joining now I know how big this thing is and I love BIG

message 1059: by Drew (new)

Drew (hurricanedaddy) | 35 comments Sounds good. Sometime in the week of September 15th we'll go. That's a Friday, and the Monday would be the 18th, so that may be the best option to start Gaunt's Ghosts: The Founding. And that'll give me time to finish up a few books in the interim.

I've got the first 20 Horus Heresy books sitting on my shelf - got them on a crazy deal and figured they'd come in handy one day - so if there's ever interest in a massive read of them I would definitely be interested!

If this Gaunt's Ghosts buddy read goes well, I'll buddy read some of those Horus Heresy books. Though I've already read the first 4 and I don't re-read, so I'd probably be looking at Fulgrim.

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Okay this is the first time I've done this but I was wondering if anyone would be interested in reading Age of Assassins by R.J Barker or Battlemage by Stephen Aryan since I've read the first couple of pages of these 2 books and there very interesting whether you want to do one of the 2 or both that's fine with me but I'm hoping we could do it sometime in November (Booked up for earlier month so yeah)

I know some of us who read Storm Front talked about doing more of the series, so if anyone is up for reading this one let me know. I will probably be reading it slowly, so if you can't start right away that's fine.

message 1072: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments I may join you for that CP since I may finish the book I'm reading a lot quicker than expected I may jump into fool moon plus I'm liking the series so far

Dan Abnett is a gift directly from the God Emperor!
Got through a serious chunk of Horus Heresy, and his were always the best books in the series. Gaunt's Ghosts is a great read. If you haven't yet, then the Ravenor and Eisenhorn series are also fantastic! I'm down to buddy read through any Black Library books with you.

message 1080: by Drew (new)

Drew (hurricanedaddy) | 35 comments Cheesu yes Abnett is so good. I plan to read Ravenor. Eisenhorn was excellent and his Horus Heresy books set the standard. He's just a really good author, exceptional at creating characters that stick with you. Case in point: the incredible supporting cast from Eisenstein.

I'm about half-way through and have put it down for the moment. I'm not sure whether to pick it back up or just DNF it. If there's a few interested in reading it I'll definitely hop in and maybe push through to get ticked off the list.

Sha | 1522 comments I haven't been able to read The Name of the Wind yet (I keep having to put it down and by the time I pick it up again I've forgotten most of what I've read, which means restarting), so I could try.

It'll have to wait till September at the very least, though- August is... busy.

Also hello I am new and don't have any idea how any of this works so let me know if I'm doing anything wrong please.

Saar The Book owl | 3089 comments @Sean and Sha: I will start reading it in October, because September is to full. So, if you're still up to it, then it would be great.

Saar The Book owl | 3089 comments And welcome, Sha. I'm new here also.

message 1097: by Seán (new)

Seán | 602 comments @Saar That sounds good - I'll hopefully have read some shorter stuff in the meantime to kickstart my reading. I had read a lot of longer books before picking up TNotW, so I think it's slower pace just bogged me down a bit.

And welcome to you and Sha! It's as simple as finding an upcoming read you're interested in and hopping in on the relevant thread (listed alphabetically by author on the main group page), or do like now and suggest a book and date in here. Things are pretty active here right now so it's a great time to find some folk to chat about books with!
