April (booksandwine) | 954 comments Read a book (picture books do not count) with less than 100 pages (according to the first edition listed on GR).

Foliage is pretty, read a book with a foliage related word in the title - Leaves, trees, fall, New England, orange - etc.

Berkeley, California does not celebrate Columbus day. Instead, they celebrate Indigenous People's Day. Read a book written by a Native American or about Native Americans.

message 53: by Manday (new)

Manday | 212 comments Twilight is all the rage, but a lot of people don't like it. Read a book that shares a word in common with the Twilight titles but has nothing to do with vampires. (i.e. a book with twilight, new, moon, eclipse, breaking, or dawn in the title)

That is really neat!!

3) October 2 – The host city of the 2016 Summer Olympics will be announced at the 121st Session. || READ a book featuring an Olympic athlete.

4) National Grandparents' Day takes place on the first Sunday after Labor Day in the United States and Canada. || READ a book which the author is a grandparent.

message 57: by Petra (last edited Jul 27, 2009 08:58AM) (new)

Petra Read two novels of at least 300 pages each: one set mainly on Land and one set mainly at sea

in honor of space travel (moon landing): read a novel that includes interplanetary travel

to continue with the "year your father/you were born" task: read a novel published in the year your mother was born and a novel published in the year your oldest sibling was born. If you have no siblings, choose your oldest cousin's birthyear.

Read a book with the word "book" in the title

message 58: by Donna Jo (new)

Donna Jo Atwood | 207 comments I am loving all these ideas--I'm glad I don't have to chose which ones to use. We would end up with the longest challenge in history.

message 59: by Katie (last edited Jul 28, 2009 06:54AM) (new)

Katie (katieisallbooked) | 109 comments So many great ideas so far! Here are my suggestions:

Read a book without any of these words in the title: "a," "an," "and" (&,+,etc.) or "the."

September is One-on-one Month. Read a book with a one-word title.

Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15 - October 15. Read one novel written by an author who was born in a Spanish-speaking country or one novel that takes place in a Spanish-speaking country.

message 60: by Kathleen (itpdx) (new)

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) One of the world's largest book fairs, the Guadalajara International Book Fair will be held this year November 28 - December 6. The guest of honor this year is Los Angeles. Fifty authors who are natives of, residents of or write books set in the Los Angeles area will be represented. Read a book by a Los Angeles area native, resident or set in the Los Angeles area.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) Fall means back to school for me, so a possible idea could be getting a professor or teachers idea of a good book to read. If you don't go to school, you could read a book about a teacher/student relationship.

message 62: by Kristen (new)

Kristen (kristenma) | 142 comments Fall is when the television season starts. Read a book that has been made into a tv show or a made for tv movie.

message 63: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) Read a book that is on the required reading list for a school in your area (local bookstores/libraries have the lists available)

Read a book whose title is also the title of a song

Halloween candy - read a book with the name of a type of candy/chocolate in the title

message 64: by Manday (new)

Manday | 212 comments Oktoberfest - Read a book with a type of alcohol or alcoholic drink in the title.

message 65: by Nicole (new)

Nicole these ideas are awesome! i am already excited to do the next challenge. I have a whole bunch of books I intend to squeeze into it!

message 66: by Alice (new)

Alice (aliceg) | 254 comments Read an autobiography by somebody primarily known as a fiction writer and then read a work of fiction by that author

Liz M Manday wrote: "Berkeley, California does not celebrate Columbus day. Instead, they celebrate Indigenous People's Day. Read a book written by a Native American or about Native Americans.

I was thinking something along these lines, but expanding it to be any indigenous people -- Australian Aborigines, Eskimos, etc.

Angie (angelitabonita) | 71 comments Jen B wrote: "Read a book that is on the required reading list for a school in your area (local bookstores/libraries have the lists available)

Halloween ..."

I really like the book and song title one and the book from a high school reading list.

message 69: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresainohio) WOW these are really great challenges,

I don't want to be the one to decide though LOL

I will be reading outside my genre I think

message 70: by Felina (new)

Felina I love all the ideas having to do with Halloween. I hope Cynthia chooses more than one Halloween themed challenge!

message 71: by Foxy Grandma (new)

Foxy Grandma (foxygrandma) Mabon is Sept 21st and Samhain is Oct 21st. Read a book about alternative religions.

message 72: by Petra (new)

Petra Change of Season - read two books, each set in opposite seasons (either 1 book takes place in winter & 1 in summer or 1 takes place in autumn & 1 in spring)

Repeat the Quizz task (read the first Quizz book that you've never read).

message 73: by Beth F (new)

Beth F | 342 comments As per usual, both ideas I'd been "saving" to recommend for the fall challenge have already been mentioned, hehe. And also as per usual, there are so many more wonderful suggestions I never would've thought of myself--you all amaze me!

message 74: by AmyMK (last edited Jul 27, 2009 10:10PM) (new)

AmyMK Kuhlman In honor of grandparent's day in September, read a book that reminds you of one of your grandparents in some way, such as where they grew up, what they did for a profession, what their hobbies were...and then explain why you chose the book in your post.
If you don't have or didn't know your grandparents, you could choose someone you knew that was grandparent-like, or ask a friend about theirs.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) The Fall challenge goes through what months?

message 76: by Potjy (last edited Jul 27, 2009 10:50PM) (new)

Potjy | 127 comments I think we never did any memoir task before. So read a memoir (no journal, diary, or blog counted).

message 77: by Beth F (new)

Beth F | 342 comments Sarah wrote: "The Fall challenge goes through what months?"

September, October & November

message 78: by Nicki (new)

Nicki (luluminstrel) There are some amazing suggestions here - too many that I would like to do.

So... maybe one of the challenges should be to pick a suggestion that has not been used in the challenge and do it!

I'd have to hold off for that task until the second half of the challenge. Our baby is due 10/2.

message 82: by Manday (new)

Manday | 212 comments I was going to say "if possible, partake in that beverage", but there are a lot of people who don't or can't drink... but I know I will be if that challenge makes it :-)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Yep, I'm in the "can't" category! (Too many pills.)

message 84: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 326 comments Now the Oktoberfests are more than beer drinking. ^.^

Oktoberfest (The original "Oktoberfest" occurred in Munich, on October 18, 1810: For the commemoration of their marriage, Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen (namesake of the Theresienwiese festival grounds) organized a great horse race. -- READ a book featuring carnivals (they have rides!), German cooking (brauts, schnitzel), German festivals, or the King Ludwig I.

Felina Manday wrote: "I was going to say "if possible, partake in that beverage", but there are a lot of people who don't or can't drink... but I know I will be if that challenge makes it :-) "

message 87: by Liz M (last edited Jul 28, 2009 01:40PM) (new)

Liz M Petra wrote: "

Personally, I'd prefer this to be expanded somehow to offer more than one choice. I understand the desire to get us to read something we never would have without this challenge, but I also have no desire to force myself to read a book I don't enjoy. (I will not be completing this task for the Summer Challenge & if used in the fall am likely to skip it again, unless I get lucky enough to get a book already on my to-read list).

message 88: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresainohio) how about a book off one of those lists

liek 100 books you should read before you die?

message 89: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 110 comments Read a book that is or was a first-reads giveaway! There are a lot of books to pick from, and it's a nice way to show some support to goodreads firstreads, and maybe even a goodreads author. :)

message 90: by Beth F (last edited Jul 28, 2009 06:39PM) (new)

Beth F | 342 comments I'm in the "can't drink" category too because I'm also expecting a baby, due on 11/06. I love the idea though and could probably make it happen after she's born. Cheers! ;)~

message 91: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (bellamy22) | 610 comments Happy Wonderful Baby to you, too, Beth!!! How exciting!!!
I love Scorpios (Oct. 24th-Nov.22nd) They can be wonderful, colorful, artistic, extremely gifted people.(Think Picasso, Madame Curie, Jonas Salk, Walter Cronkite, Grace Kelly, Billy Graham, and lots of Goodreads Readers!!!)

message 92: by Beth F (last edited Jul 28, 2009 07:13PM) (new)

Beth F | 342 comments Scorpios are fantastic folks! I don't know much about star signs so I'm not sure how closely I buy into them but supposedly Capricorns (like me) and Scorpios often have very compatible personalities. I've always gotten along very easily with Scorpios. :)

My mom is a Scorpio, my closest grandma was a Scorpio and my best friend from college is also one....not to mention a few other good friends! So who knows?!?
