I read this book series probably in 2004/2005/2006, and I think it was relatively new at the time. It had, I think, seven books. Each focused on a particular person in a group of friends that had experienced a tragic event at a birthday party in middle school. Since then, they had all drifted apart and now are experiencing various problems in high school. One of the boys is depressed and struggling with his medication, another is paralyzed from a car accident (drunk driving, I think), another is a closeted gay football star, etc. I think at the end of the series they all reunite and make up? Or at least the "mystery" of the tragic birthday party is finally revealed.
