Ashley | 1439 comments Which has horses as a main part or is set on a farm?

message 3602: by Katharine (new)

Katharine | 92 comments Aw, thanks guys! I took a speed reading class years ago. I also have lots of time on my hands since I'm on a reduced work schedule due to an injury.

I finished Eggsecutive Orders. My plan is to finish the two I'm reading now in the next 2-ish days and then read A Death In Vienna (#4) and Prince of Fire (#5)...both of which will help with our weapon level unless they can be put to better use somewhere else, of course. :)

I imagine it has horses, since it's about the land army.

Kimberly (poweki) | 1713 comments Can I claim the Read a book where someone dangles a reward to get someone else to do something. goal?

Or the gives or takes a bribe goal?

I'd like to read Big Rock next. I need something lighthearted!

In the book, the MC's dad is selling his jewelry store and needs the MC to appear respectable - so he gets his BFF to pose as his fiance and he gives her a big diamond ring to get her to cooperate.

(I know it sounds stoopid - but after the book I'm reading now, I need a bit of mindlessness).

Could use Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad for book written 20+ years ago.

What do we need for Card 5?

Kimberly (poweki) | 1713 comments I've claimed dangles a reward OR bribe with Big Rock

You can pick which is more useful.

EDIT: Gillian's claimed 'thief' (message 3990) - so please put me down for the Dangles a Reward goal (CARD 4)

Is the other less than 200 pages book also on Card 4 still open? (It is on the Wobble sheet). If so, may I claim it with the novella The Dispatcher? It's 23,000 words long according to the author's website:
http://whatever.scalzi.com/2015/08/09...

(or is 23,000 words too few?)

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments I can take r for cross as the first book I am reading for the readathon is reunion pass

Will try and grab readathon books to match up with tasks if possible. Currently at dancing with my daughter. Will have a better look once inspection over at 5 this evening

I'd say it's too short - we really need page counts to judge. How many hours?

Kimberly (poweki) | 1713 comments Ashley wrote: "I'd say it's too short - we really need page counts to judge. How many hours?

It's 2 hours 19 minutes - but I think you're right that it's too short. I recall kids books have to be 25,000 words so I imagine this will just fall short...

I'm closing in on finishing my 10,000 word paper - I know all too well what 2,000 words feels like.

So, nevermind. I'll find another goal to fill as the next shortest book I have is 240 pages.

message 3635: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (poweki) | 1713 comments I'll read a #5 in series book next - but it's quite long (20+ hours)

The Secret Place

message 3636: by Katharine (last edited Oct 21, 2016 06:19PM) (new)

Katharine | 92 comments Finished Blinded (Alan Gregory, #12) by Stephen White . Started A Death in Vienna (Gabriel Allon, #4) by Daniel Silva . I can also read Sky Burial by Xinran , which is 161 pages.

After I finish Sky Burial I was planning on reading The Genesis Key by James Barney . Do you think it would work for "perpetuity" since the plot centers around the human genome and DNA, which all living things have and that will never change? The other two books I plan to finish before the end of the month (besides Prince of Fire) are The General's Daughter and Running Blind.

Katharine | 92 comments Finished A Death in Vienna (Gabriel Allon, #4) by Daniel Silva . Started Prince of Fire (Gabriel Allon, #5) by Daniel Silva today, and Sky Burial An Epic Love Story of Tibet by Xinran and The Genesis Key by James Barney yesterday.

Next on my list: 2 I need to finish this month-- Running Blind (Jack Reacher, #4) by Lee Child (#4 in series) and The General's Daughter (Paul Brenner, #1) by Nelson DeMille (#1 in series). Trying to find a book that could fit "isotropic" and another way The General's Daughter could be used, maybe red cover, but I don't think it is red enough. This could be stretching it, but it might fit "isotropic" in that the title character is found dead, and dead is dead, it doesn't change.

I could also read Off Kilter (Scottish Highlands, #1) by Hannah Reed , which would obviously fit "O" in "cross".
