Oh, Ok - I might take the bigger books (like those in the GOT series) off my shelf...

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments There's 48 hours before official start of Emerge. Books finished during the break can be considered Emerge the Victor books.

I'll start reading some books 3+ in series hoping it would make up for my 2 wk absence. But am hoping we get a good (stable) internet connection!

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments I was actually going to suggest if anyone is looking for something to read now but has nothing to fit remaining labours task to start reading short series particularly 1-4's to start. As long as they are after tomorrow morning, we will be able to use them levelling up our weapon straight away

Fits: Relay

Wow, the new challenge is complicated.

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Not a fan of the Never Never series but I appreciate its existence and its benefits for the good of wobble haha i presume a lot of us will be finishing that series after all!

Gillian Murrell | 497 comments OMG that looks so complicated. Have any of our Captains played this before? How do the 16 hour tournaments work? Im so confused I wish I had not read the rules lol I can handle the series reading part thats easy lol

~~~N~~~ (chocolate-cannibal-bunnies) | 616 comments I'm with Gillian on this. If other people just want to direct me and tell me what to generally do, feel free :P
message 3408: by Kimberly (new)
Kimberly (poweki) | 1713 comments I don't have many short books and especially not many that are a part of a series. I'm not super keen to buy any more books either.
I'll plan to read books that are in series (mostly #1) but will certainly be happy to take direction for how I can best be useful.
I'm taking a break from writing my paper now to finish my book. :)
kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments None of us has played this before but Nikk is going to take the helm on this one :D
I'm copy pasting a mod's explanation with layman's terms ;)
(from ❀Tea❀, ... gone ...)
"You need health and weapon for fighting monsters and later in tournament.
You start game with base weapon (attack 10 I think) and you can level it up by reading books in series. Higher the weapon level, easier to hurt your opponent.
I'll give you few (made-up) examples:
Let's say your hero is base level on everything - so hero level is 1 which gives you 20 hp (health points) and your weapon is level 0 with 10 attack
and one of your cards is monster butterfly which has 9 hp and 13 attack which when dead gives you 4 points, 1 gold and wing.
So battle would look like this:
Hero: level 1, 20hp, weapon level 0 10A
Butterfly: 9hp 13 attack
- hero attacks - 9hp-10A - butterfly dead
- you get all that from butterfly without hurting your self
Now let's say, hero same levels, but next monster Wasp is little tougher (15hp, 18A) and gives you 6 points, heal potion and sting
Battle:
Hero - 20hp, 10A
Wasp - 15hp, 18A
- hero attacks - 15hp-10A - wasp has 5hp left
- wasp attacks - 20hp-18A - hero has 2hp left
- hero attacks - 5hp-10A - wasp is dead
You again get all those goodies, but now your health is low and now even butterfly could kill you. If your weapon was level 5, you'd kill that wasp in one hit.
To heal yourself, you have couple of options. In lower hero levels it's easier by leveling up your hero. Leveling up is achieved by getting certain number of points (see in rules post #2). By killing that butterfly and wasp, you have now 10 points which means you have enough points for level 2. Now your hero is level 2 and is all healthy again (has 25hp now).
Another way to heal yourself is by using that potion wasp dropped when you killed it :)
Beside killing monsters, you can get points by doing tasks. Let's say that one of your cards says that if you read (team) blue cover, white cover, 500+ book, title starting with N and author's initial B (so 5 books) and that quest is worth 10 points. You read that, submit books into spreadsheet and get 10 points.
You might notice that you now have 20 points which means your hero is now level 3"
Hera is getting so much attention that most of the gods are jealous. Do you see green? Lavish a little TLC on some of the other gods.
◈ Read a book with a green cover ( 75% green)
◈ Read a book in which Hades is a character
◈ Read a book in which Aphrodite is a character
I'll be finishing books #6 and #1 in series next week.
I hope my reading picks up again. I discovered the Ivona text to speech app and now I can listen my Kindle books during my commute to work.
One query on this:
B) any books in a series to level up our weapon
Could the books be from any series on they should be from one series only - like Title Relay?
I completed #2 in a series. Could that be used for this task? Thanks.
kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments We have 48 hours before official start of Emerge. All books read and finished from here on will count for Emerge. We can read anything we like! :D Yey!
Since we don't have our quest cards yet, we can also start working on leveling up our weapons just by reading books from a series. I checked everyone's currently reading shelves and noticed a few are reading books from a series. I updated the spreadsheet so here it goes...
Level 1
1st book in series- --Nikk--- Beautiful Oblivion
Level 2
1st book in series - --Skandia--- Wrong
2nd book in series - --Gillian--- Dragonsinger
Level 3
1st book in series - --Gillian ---Lady Midnight
2nd book in series - --Gillian ---Well of Ascension
3rd book in series
Level 4
1st book in series- --Katharine--- Nightmares can be Murder
2nd book in series- -- Kathleen--- The Exiled Queen
3rd book in series
4th book in series
kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Saw a very nice explanation for Emerge. Thank you Kazen! :D
_________________________________
To start - we have a hero that can gain experience, gold, and items by fighting monsters and doing quests. These will be on cards that we'll get once the game starts.
We can also level up our weapon and it's really straightforward - read books from series. Reading book #1 of a series will gain us level one. Reading another book #1 of a series plus a book #2 of a series will gain us level two. (Different series are okay!) Reading a book #1, #2, and #3 will gain us level three, and so on. Each level adds one point of attack to our weapon.
There's no telling what kind of cards we'll get but that doesn't stop us from planning weapon books now! To reach level four we will need 10 books total:
4 book #1 in a series
3 book #2 in a series
2 book #3 in a series
1 book #4 in a series
Is one of the books you're working on now (a whole number) part of a series? Something on your TBR that you'd like to read? Go ahead and claim it! If you're not working on a series book or don't care of series at all that's totally fine - once we get our monster and quest cards we'll have plenty of other tasks to keep us busy! Finish whatever books you want, as they'll all count for Emerge. If you'd rather take a break that's great too - a warrior needs their strength! :)
I just finished book 5 of the fever series yesterday and I only started the series after Kathleen recommended at the start of wobble. I also have the next 3 books in the series borrowed from the library so I can read them soon also :-) Long story short, i am really enjoying the fever series :-P
Speaking of reading I just finished Castle of Dreams for another challenge. It is not part of series, but i am hoping it will work for a quest once Emerge starts proper. For now though i think I am gonna read Beautiful Redemption )Maddox Brothers #2)
kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments What can I say? FEVER has it's faults but I found it addicting so ...what faults?! And of course hello Barrons! I actually binge read them--- with eating, going to the bathroom and sleeping as my only break. I had no discipline at all.
