Gillian Murrell | 497 comments HAPPY READING everyone :)

Everybody is raring to go. Oh goodness, I need to psych myself up to read my first book. It's some kind of a memoir so...

I don't know when I'll finish American Gods and at this rate I'm not even sure if I can finish it this year. I should have read it while it was the BOM!

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments What are you reading ladies? I am picking up Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace ... One School at a Time for J8 and The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender which when Ashley agrees to (come on Ashley say yes lol) would work for F5.

Happy reading ladies!

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments I am starting with Biting Bad for D3 then i am thinking of reading Glass Sword which will work for either F5 or C5 :-)

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Is that series (chicagoland) good? I tried book 1 of I think it was Night Huntress (or something but with a guy love interest named Bones) and didn't like it much to continue. I'm only reading Kate Daniels and The Others.

~~~N~~~ (chocolate-cannibal-bunnies) | 616 comments @Nikk, I've not personally enjoyed the Red Queen series, but I thought they were okay. What do you think? None of my friends so far have liked it, but I've seen a lot of hype.
I'm reading a gay/fantasy romance (number 2 in a series) for J1: Cinder. I've not yet started, but soon will be reading Howl's Moving Castle (a classic children's novel, which an amazing film is based off) for C3. It's funny, because I've actually read the third book in the Howl's Moving Castle series, but never 1 or 2. It was all my library had at the time.
Also, forgive me if I'm too chatty, I obviously like to talk.
kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments I had Red Queen in my want-to-read shelf before it was officially released. I browsed through the reviews and decided it wasn't for me so I transferred it to lost-interest. I think one of the reasons why it is hyped is it's a hit among teenagers. And teenagers are a tour de force lol!
Nothing to forgive Noa. I chose "chatty team" during signups! One of the reasons I love NBRC challenges is the talking.
message 258: by Ashley (new)
Ashley | 1439 comments Haha okay yes ladies you may pick another goal to read towards. Thank Kathleen for this :P
message 259: by Ashley (new)
Ashley | 1439 comments I loved Red Queen!! I don't even know why I did so much...I was so shocked haha
kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments *hides in the corner* lol Sorry! It's just that it's hard for me to focus on just one book and I can't remember the last time I've only read one book at a time.
Okay, so I've got another proposal. Accomplishing tasks for HITS gives us better points because of the bonus points too. So for those willing to shift their reading choices a bit more, we've got 2 choices.
D-3 - read a book shelved as mystery by at least 10 people
F-5 - read a book where the audio version is narrated by a female
Rules say we can read max of 10 books for HIT tasks. This includes the first 2 readers needed for us to claim points.
Example:
I'm reading a 349-page book for J8 (miss): 3 points
VS
(after 2 other members unlocked it for us to claim bonus pts) I'm reading a 301-page book for F5: 3 pts + 1= 4 pts
kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Ashley wrote: "I loved Red Queen!! I don't even know why I did so much...I was so shocked haha"
Maybe it's one of those books where you either like it or you don't. There's no in between. Is it true it reads a bit like The Bachelorette? Or am I confusing it with Kiera Cass' series?
message 262: by Ashley (new)
Ashley | 1439 comments That would be the Kiera Cass Selection series. Definitely like the bachelor with slightly more drama. One of those addictive reads!
Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments Gah I fell asleep after 10 mins of reading. My daughter just woke me up at 1.30am so got her back settled and now I'm wide awake guess what I'm going to do now lol? I haven't thought about my next book yet, will have a look at that in the morning.
message 264: by Ange (new)
Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments I think that's a good idea Kat. The mystery ones will fill up easy the audio books by a female less so, will have to google for that one. I don't do audio normally but all the ones I have listened to have been male.
kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments I try to stay away from YA contemporaries because I have a hard time relating. I stick with YA fantasy when I read YA. The only YA contemporaries I read that stuck are Thirteen Reasons Why (which I hated), It's Kind of a Funny Story (which I really liked!), If I Stay and Where She Went (liked okay), The Fault in Our Stars (okay but will never read another John Green).
I've only read a few MG and mostly they're recommendations from reliable bookish friends.
message 266: by Elspeth (new)
Elspeth | 101 comments The book I'm reading could work for F5.
message 267: by Ange (new)
Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments I've also read If I Stay series which was ok thinking back I barely remember the books though. Didn't mind Fault. I don't really get teenage angst anymore either, maybe in a few more years once my own kids start to become little hormone charged dramatic teens though.
kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Ange wrote: "I think that's a good idea Kat. The mystery ones will fill up easy the audio books by a female less so, will have to google for that one. I don't do audio normally but all the ones I have listened ..."
Here's how I check if the audio version was narrated by a woman.
1. Go to the book's main Goodreads page.
2. Click on "All editions"
3. Look for the audiobook edition and click on it.
4. You can find the name of the narrator beside the author.
How old is your daughter?
message 270: by Ange (new)
Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments She's 4 in a couple of weeks, so the teens are ages away, but my son is coming up 9.
kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Does he let you kiss him goodbye? Haha my brother hates it when my mom is being sweet on him til he graduated from college!
message 272: by Ange (new)
Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments Ha yep still does but only in the car not by the school gate. At this stage I'm still pretty cool though and he wants me to go on school trips. He loves reading which is awesome. Currently into all the goosebumps and diary of wimpy kid. I'm taking him to the library tomorrow.
message 273: by Ange (new)
Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments Yeah it's less common for boys, most of his good friends don't like it. But I read to him every night until he got old enough that he wanted to read by himself which may have helped.
kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Holy moly! 4151 books on your TBR Ange?
We hope to add five hundred more before WOBBLE ends!
Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments Yep complete OCD haha. I have issues and may need help! At least I have a gajillion to choose from for tasks
message 276: by Gillian (new)
Gillian Murrell | 497 comments Red Queen I did not like that book but i bought it along with Glass Swords because everyone was raving about it so only just got around to reading it this week and it was a lot better than Red Queen but still not a great book. The series is defiantly over rated.
Audio books with a female narrater haha so easy may i suggest Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer series if you have not read it already its such a sweet book and the narrater did an awesome job its YA but a sweet twist on Cinderella.
message 277: by Ange (new)
Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments Ha couldn't see the moving pics on my mobile last night Kat, now I see!
Cinder looks great, most of us have it on our TBR or read pile.
Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut  (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments I was surprised at how much i loved Red Queen as initially I nearly didn't pick it up at all. I pre-ordered Glass Sword but since it arrived it has just stayed on my shelf
Ange, my daughter turned 4 in March. Ian generally enjoying this age though my daughter has really been turning on the attitude this past few weeks. I am already making a reader out of her and we try to head to the library at least once a week :-)
I am not the biggest fan of YA Contemporary, like Kat I sometimes find it harder to relate though I adored the if I stay duology and loved Looking For Alaska by John Green (which incidentally is July YA BOM)
@Kat, The first book in Chicagoland vampire series is actually Friday Night Bites. I think Night Huntress is the first book in a series by a different author. I started the series a while ago after I enjoyed the author's Ya series hex bound and actually only got back initially because it had shifters for points for land pre-challenge :-p it's a fun series though and a quick easy read so I am having fun with it :-)
Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut  (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments Oh and my way of checking for the female narrator was to go on to the Audible Australia website , look the book up and see who narrates it :-)
message 280: by ~~~N~~~ (new)
~~~N~~~ (chocolate-cannibal-bunnies) | 616 comments @Ange, It sounds like you're raising your kids right! Lol. I think it's awesome that you read to them every night, and I hope your daughter catches the reading bug too :) Has your son read Harry Potter or Percy Jackson, or is that a couple years away? Oh, and seems like we both suffer from huge TBR shelves!

The only two genres I outright dislike are YA Contemporary (especially since it's so overdone) and Historical Romance. I still occasionally read books from them and can be surprised, but I tend to not enjoy the genres.

Books I saw mentioned: The Selection (disliked it, but a friend was a fan, and eventually she got me somewhat invested), Thirteen Reasons Why (horrible book, just outright horrible), If I Stay (I loved this duology, read both books in a day), John Green books (read Looking For Alaska and it was okay, skimmed The Fault in Our Stars and I wasn't excited. P.S. if I ever go on a negative rant about an author, it's likely to be John Green or Suzanne Collins), Cinder (sweet, never continued the series).

Rebecca (rebeccaemma) | 85 comments My 11 y.o daughter just finished reading Percy Jackson - The Lightening Thief - and totally loved it.
I had parent teacher interviews Thursday afternoon for my twin 12 y.o 's and I was told one of my twins constantly gets in trouble for reading novels during class time! Big readers here!

message 283: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (poweki) | 1713 comments Just checking in quickly. I am plugging away on THE CARTEL and will get it done this week. Please don't worry if you need to switch it to another goal. I get through about a book or 2 a week. I realize I'm not as fast a reader as most of you and I just want you to do what works best for the team.

My son is 8 and, he too, is a voracious reader. It's wonderful. He still "lets" me read to him at night sometimes. :)

message 284: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccaemma) | 85 comments I have a book by a female narrator - Allegiant (second book in the Divergent series) but will try and get through my first tasks and then if I have time will volunteer for that

message 285: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 1439 comments Haha Ange just like your son I've been reading Goosebumps. I was surprised that the dummy one didn't freak me out like it did when I was a kid.

That's okay Kimberly! You need to complete an official task so I'm happy for that to be yours.

I think I loved the first selection book because it was just so light to read. Didn't take a lot of concentration!

I've been into contemporary more lately...I just got a little sick of fantasy and thrillers :( Hopefully I'm not put off of the genres for very long!!

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Well, single lady here so of course I tend to choose gifs with beautiful men lol. I'm afraid you'll have to bear with that for about 5 months? ;)
description

Parenting goals definitely includes "influence my children to read". Good job on great parenting skills, Ange, Nikk, Noa and Rebecca!

I shall take on a Tana French for the mystery read. I have put off reading the series for so long and this is a great motivation for me to start them.

I enjoy paranormal from time to time so one of these days maybe I'll pick up the Chicagoland series. I started Georgina Kincaid way back and still haven't finished it.

And I go for contemporary romance/chicklit and historical romance when I need something fluffy and fun. I don't read NA because I can't relate too, and I am afraid that my eye will fall out of its socket from too much rolling. Some romcom author favorites: Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Julie James

And I think there's no such thing as too young for Harry Potter! I also enjoyed the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer!

message 287: by ~~~N~~~ (last edited Jun 17, 2016 05:10PM) (new)

~~~N~~~ (chocolate-cannibal-bunnies) | 616 comments Oh Kat, definitely dont have kids. Not ready, too young, too single. Maybe when I graduate with my nursing degree and have a steady job and find someone marriageable. Maybe then. But I would definitely raise them as readers because description
I've read three Julie James books, back in 2013/14, and they were all very enjoyable. I don't swoon over men in a suit as much as some of my friends, but I appreciate her covers! <3
Harry Potter is definitely for all ages and I actually recently went back and read books 2-6 in the Artemis Fowl series (I picked up the first book at a literature festival in 2011). I really enjoyed it, especially since I like to go and read middle-grade novels every now and then.
Oh and hello, Jensen Ackles :D Are you a Supernatural fan?
message 288: by Ange (new)
Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments Sounds like we are all breeding the next generation of book lovers.
Nikk totally understand the attitude of a 3/4 year old. My girl is a sweet gentle thing unless she wants something badly. She has been known to be completely dramatic, her legs often forget how to work in these battle of wills so wriggling across floors with sighing and moaning is common. I didnt get that with my son.
Noa we have both of the series at home and I read the first Harry Potter to him a couple of years ago but I condensed it a little as a lot of the words were over his head. They are still a little too wordy for him just yet but the rate he reads though it shouldnt be too far away. He actually bought out the Phillip Pullman Northern Lights this morning to try as he had finished his last book but I glanced at it and thought that hes not quite there yet and didn't want him to not enjoy it as he couldn't quite understand it.
Bring on the hunky gifs. It is well known in my household that I have fondness for Ryan Reynolds and Chris Hemsworth. My son always blushes when I comment on Thor's muscles haha.
Gillian Murrell | 497 comments Oh Kat please do not hold back on the gifs of beautiful men we maybe a married and a little older but that does not mean we don't appreciate a nice body/smile. In fact you may need to teach me how to put those gifs up ;) ;).
I hope he enjoys them! I liked Philip Pullman as a kid, though I remember not being overly fond of the dramaticism at the end. Do you like to read books with them and then watch the movies, assuming there are movies? I remember my grandmother used to do that with me. It's amazing to see kids vocabularies expand as they find their little niches in the literary world.
Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut  (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments Kat, free to post gifs of Jensen Ackles anytime. I currently making my way through season 6 of Supernatural. Gotta love Netflix. I also treated my self to Sam and Dean funky pop figurines last week.
Currently at my daughter's dance lesson which is the perfect chance to get some more reading done so will pop in again later today
Yes!! Avid Game of Thrones fan. Though I must admit I havent watched all of the new season.
Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut  (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments Ange, yeah I started from season 1 a couple of months ago. Skimmed through the first3 seasons as a refresher from watching them a few years ago and am now at the tail end of season 6. Still got about 4-5 seasons to go.
I haven't watched game of thrones. I read the first three books about 10 years ago but dont know if I have the patience to start from the beginning again and the one time I did try to start I had an issue with my Apple TV so started watching supernatural instead
kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments I've been meaning to watch GoT to see what the buzz is all about but I always find a reason not to. One of these days I shall get to it! I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to read the books. They're huge! I mean I still have Way of Kings waiting for me in my shelf. Why are epic fantasies designed to be sooo long? Who declared 500 pages to be the minimum count?
Anyone watching Sherlock BBC?
