Yes, I am too! It's wonderful. I'm kind of worried about Kasey.

Frankly, I like this idea. There's no great harm to those who read the books in June, but we could easily stretch it through two months, giving Kasey some time to breathe when she returns (which I am sure she will b/c I am thinking positively.) So, I suppose the threads are still a sort of issue, but I love the idea of stretching it to two months (a month "off" or just a lazy slow reading month - which may actually bring more members to the discussions.)

Honore | 175 comments Thanks Marcos and NancyJ, i'm a new memeber and thought I was missing something when I couldn't find the threads!

I like this too. I've recently fallen behind so a little extra time might be quite nice. Hope Kasey is ok!

message 155: by Melanie (new)

Melanie As a person who joined the group when it was first created, I STRONGLY want Nancy to STAND DOWN and stop trying to micro-manage this group. If you want to be a moderator, go start your own group, You joined only 6 months ago. (Yes, you've annoyed me enough that I bothered to look this up). So please, just stop. Stop trying to force the group to choose your suggestion as the next theme, stop trying to make Kasey look bad, infact stop posting in this thread, do not reply to my post, just stop please.

message 156: by Brady (new)

Brady Parkin I also joined at the groups inception with Melanie and I am kinda on the same thought process. This has been Kasey’s baby from the beginning and I, like the rest of you, am certainly certainly genuinely concerned about her and hope she is alright.

That being said, I do think that if the temporary inactivity is as big of a concern as some have stated, a new and separate group may be a good option.

I also am onboard with a previous option of allowing the month lapse to be a great catch up month. I know that I have gotten behind on many of the books (as I have also explored other genres in the process) and could use a bit of time to catch up. Plus summers can be busy so a slow, casual read has some appeal to it in that sense. Just my opinion.

message 157: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) Thank you. I was feeling I was the only one who felt this way. I apricate the messages of support I have gotten.

I want Kasey to have enough time. I love this group the way it is.

I actually think a month off in summer would be nice

message 158: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Like I said before, waiting a little more is always a good and wise approach. Situations may develop and solve themselves. :-)

I also like the idea of a "slow month". The group wouldn't stop, there are many activities we can carry on without need to change anything, like the challenges and discussions - some of which have been very active.

We could consider July " a great catch up month", as suggested by Brady, that's a bright idea! I totally agree. I'd like very much to catch up on some books on our Group Bookshelf.

And since all discussions for past reads are open, we can discuss as we read without need for any changes!

message 159: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Sorry if I'm stepping on anyone's toes, especially as a new member whose opinion may not count as much as the ones of someone who's been here since the beginning. I sincerely hope that Kasey is doing well, and hope that whatever is going on is her own decision to step away and focus on something that takes priority over an online discussion group, and I fully support her doing so.

But I'm not sure what exactly the crime is in wanting to open threads to discuss the books that have been previously chosen and are currently being read by the members of a book discussion group. I don't think wanting the group to function as it was set up to do is an attempt to make the moderator look bad.

Nancy, thanks for bumping up the exisitng 1984 discussion threads, it looks like there are a few comments there from people wanting to discuss as they read. And while discussions for past reads are open, discussions for current reads are not, so we can't discuss the new June books right now. Am I missing something about how hard it is to start a thread? I personally see no problem with waiting to open new polls for the next reads for a while, and maybe taking a month of from choosing new books. But this much consternation over threads to discuss current books seems silly to me.

message 160: by Laura H L (new)

Laura H L (laurah30) | 648 comments I like the idea of taking a break. Let's wait until we hear from our moderator. I think she deserves some space and I hope everything is ok.
I did get a copy of The Bell Jar and plan on reading it soon. My comments can wait until our group resumes its activity.

message 161: by Leesa (new)

Leesa Sigh. I didn’t want to be involved in this chat but seen as Melanie and others are starting to speak I thought I had better comment as I have also been in this group since near inception.

I like so many are worried about Kasey, hope she is ok and comes back to sort us all out soon. Her dedication and commitment to this group has been amazing and she did ask at several points if someone else wanted to help her moderate and no one stepped forward. I’m not calling anyone out here or stepping on toes but I’ll be damned if in her absence someone swoops in to take over.
I agree with calling this a month off, still reading the group picks and we can comment on them at the end or whenever Kasey comes back.

This group has literally changed my life and has been such a vital part of my existence for a while, I have made friends, read books I never thought I would ever touch and most importantly felt part of a community that all had a single goal and purpose each month which is so attractive to me.

So in the meantime everyone chill. Please let’s not fight and argue but remember why we’re all here, respect opposing views and try to have fun too.

Peace out.

Karen | 131 comments Sarah wrote: "Sorry if I'm stepping on anyone's toes, especially as a new member whose opinion may not count as much as the ones of someone who's been here since the beginning. I sincerely hope that Kasey is doi..."

Ditto! Although I am okay with waiting, it seems more logical to discuss the pre-selected June books in June or asap. Maybe it is due to my age (or perhaps the number of books I read), but if I have to wait a few weeks to share my thoughts, the plot lines and character motivations tend to get fuzzy in my mind.

Another factor for some of us is having limited access to certain titles. Since I don't ever buy books, I am always on a waiting list for popular books. Needless to say, when a book like Eleanor Oliphant became available, I had to read it then. Waiting wasn't really an option for me. (The Bell Jar was much easier to come by, so I'll just keeping renewing it and read it when Kasey returns.)

message 163: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 26 comments As with many others who have commented here, I want to offer my support in Kasey's absence. I hope she is doing okay.

With that said, I know I am a very new member, but when Kasey returns, I'd be more than willing to help her out if needed. I have 0 experience with groups here on Goodreads (this is actually the only group I belong to), but regardless I would be willing to learn and would most certainly help out if she expresses the desire/need.

I really hope she is doing okay and just taking a breather. She truly is an awesome moderator and has done a fantastic job here.

message 164: by Ella (new)

Ella (ellamc) I've been in and out of this group, but I really don't like the bickering. It feels unnecessary. Everyone wants Kasey to return. The issue is threads for two books, not a military coup.

I seriously doubt if Kasey (who is an incredibly kind and reasonable person) would be upset if someone tried to help by making a decision in service of her group.

Please let's stop bickering or attacking each other. This is a book club, not a death match. There are a lot of us, and everyone sees things differently. What one person may see as helping could be construed differently by others. I very seriously doubt anyone is trying to take Kasey's place.

Perhaps those who have been here since the beginning could figure out the best way to deal with this amongst themselves, then nobody "new" would be a part of it. It's the confusion, after people have bought, waited for and read books, that seems to be the biggest source of anxiety.

Meanwhile, the books from May had very little discussion, so people could always catch up on those too.

message 165: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments OK, it seems we all agree with keeping the group as it always has been, great, friendly and all. :-)

It also seems most of us liked the idea of a month off in July. And reading the June books in June, which doesn't change anything.

message 166: by Linda (new)

Linda Nielson | 708 comments All this bickering does not seem like the group I joined. Instead of fighting, we should be offrering thoughts, prayers or whatever you might do for someone in need, in behalf of Kasey.
I also really like having Jun/Jul be a catchup month. I am so far behind this will be good.

It’s confusing. Nothing matches up and you’re changing books.

message 171: by Ella (new)

Ella (ellamc) I am TOTALLY up for the catching-up on One Hundred Years of Solitude, if you'll have me.

"Marcos wrote: "In the "great catch up month" of July, Zainab and I are going to read One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez!"

Kgrinch wrote: "Where? Is this a substitution for the books we voted for? "

Kgringch, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a book from a completely different earlier date. We're still reading the three books chosen in June, and since Kasey is not able to get here, we decided to add a "breather" month in -- so no new books in July.

Marcos & Zainab decided to "catch up" on a book the group read a different time during July (all threads stay open forever, so anyone can catch up on anything at any time.) Nothing is required, and nobody chose it nor is it a substitution - just something a couple people decided to add on for themselves. The chosen books remain the same for June (and also for July because of a late start and to give Kasey space when she returns.)

Hope that makes sense!

message 172: by Leesa (new)

Leesa Well said Ella 🙂

As usual I’m already late to start but I’ll definitely use July to catch up on some of the group reads I missed out on!

message 173: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Thanks for clarifying, Ella. :-)

KGrinch. note that I highlighted the month of July in bold. :-)

Sometimes, when there's a lot of information, it helps if we go a little back in the discussion and reread it.

So, if anyone is still confused, let's make a brief of what has been said before:

1. BOTM for JUNE (previously chosen):

- The Bell Jar
- Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine
- 1984

Discussions are open.

2. What do we do in JULY ?

A "great catch up month", when everyone catches up with any of the group's past reads, as they like!

All discussions for past books remain open.

Actually, a "breather" month, no new books. So, anyone can catch up with group reads or read what else they like! :-)

Like Leesa this group has been a great company and a push to read more with the challenges and suggestions. I really like what Kasey does and Marcos' help, I understand that in this way everything is organized.
If all of us would, out of being helpful, start new threads and put suggestions in action, this would get quite chaotic. It doesn't mean us members don't have a space for suggestions and opinions. Is just that we have to be patient and wait for Kasey to sort studies, job and personal life.
I'm so far behind with the list of books that I didn't care at all when was the thread and what book belonged to that month. Some of them I read them many years ago and still had a place to comment in the threads.
Tiny things have snowballed out of proportion and tainted the spirit of the group that caught me last August. Please let's not fight for things, no matter how strong we feel about them.
Hugs to all, keep reading (this list or other) and be kind to one another.

hi Kasey
Really nice to see you :).
I'm not a very active member - I read some posts, and post even fewer myself - but I had noticed your absence and was feeling a little concerned about you. I don't say that to put pressure on you in anyway, but just to say that it is good to know you are still around and ok.
Take care doing what you need to do

So glad to know you are OK, Kasey.... that was my main concern, and I'm guessing that's probably true for most of us. I hate that I can't offer to help you right now (I've hit a bit of a patch myself), but I love how you have set up this group as low pressure & fun - I hope the lovely people who have offered to help you can keep it that way for you as well. Consider yourself hugged <3

Thank you! At least I now know that I am not overlooking it or going to the wrong places on the page. I look forward to participating when things resume.

Kelly_Hunsaker_reads ... Where do I find the upcoming books? I need to start finding July's and August's books.

message 193: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Hi, Kelly! We're having a month off in July, everyone will catch up with any past group read or read anything else.

Have a look at this thread's past messages to get more details.

message 194: by Kerri (new)

Kerri | 711 comments I think we need to make an announcement so everyone is aware of this decision that was made by just a few members. I am all for having a “catch up month”, but it was not made by the normal process of a poll and there are probably many people wondering where our July books are. I don’t know how to do that and feel I am not in a position TO do it even if I knew how (don’t want “too many cooks in the kitchen” and all). Anyone up for it? Or is anyone able to do it?

message 195: by Kyra (new)

Kyra Keeton | 279 comments An announcement would be great, but like you I do not specifically know how we do that. Hopefully anyone who is looking for the July books will go to this Question section, as I did, and find out that it’s Catch Up month.

Also, I think the books that I am going to be catching up on during July will be Jungle Book and Ready Player One, if anyone is interested in joining in on that discussion with me.

message 196: by Hectaizani (new)

Hectaizani I think the only one who can make announcements is Kasey and it looks like she still has some stuff going on because she hasn't been around as much as usual. Which is probably why we don't have an announcement.

So, I'll leave this here - for July in Kasey's absence we decided to do a catch-up month to give both her and us a little breathing room.

Yvanna Kroitor | 22 comments Hi - how do i add challenge books i have read? My shelf says 0 but I've read at least 6 of the books so far. Thanks

message 198: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Hi Yvanna.

Which is your shelf for this group's challenge?

Have you set a "date read" for each of your read books?

It looks like you haven't, few of your reads show a date read. If you don't, the books won't be counted by the system. Once you do, that'll probably be solved.

Jessica | 26 comments Hi guys,
Not intending to sound pushy or rude in the slightest, and I know we said July would be a catch-up month in this chat, but are there any plans for what we will read in August? I just want to ensure I haven't missed a post somewhere as there are a lot of discussion threads. I don't mind at all, and am on the side of Kasey taking a break, but just checking to make sure I haven't overlooked something!

Thank you.
