10.6 Traveling the DDC way
Read a book shelved in the 900s (900-999) at the Brooklyn Public Library, using the Dewey Decimal Classification.

Ed, as a journal (which I wasn't exactly keying in on), there is far less text that we could like for it to qualify for styles. You can definitely claim it for the task, but no styles for this one.

What happens if Brooklyn has the book as an ebook only? They don't seem to show the call number in the catalogue, in that case.

Brooklyn must have it shelved with the DDC number. I realize that may seem a bit more restrictive than we often do.

The books I was looking at do have one physical copy each on the shelves, but I might read them early in the season, just in case ;) They seem to have more and more ebooks these days.

BPL does move things to storage, but those books still carry the DDC or other label. It does seem as if they've been acquiring more ebooks - those don't hit the YA designation either, so it's not all loss.

Does anyone have some good recommendations for narrative history? (No need to check against BPL, I'll do that afterwards).

My plan is to read To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914-1918 by Adam Hochschild. As a bonus, it's on the WWI list for 20.6, and won the Dayton Literary Peace Prize 2012 for a 20.3 combo.

I hit the boards here pretty early, but my post above was written about 11:30 am, by which time I'd been up for over 6 hours, so sort of middling. ;-) My time zone is GMT - 9, almost, but not quite, as far west as one can be. Hawaii is another hour west of me.

In the Brooklyn Link I found other books he's written in the 900's but not this one

Since it's not shelved in the 900s at BPL it doesn't work.

It's about Hurricane Katrina and a man (Zeitoun) who helped victims and then disappeared. It combos with 20.7 and 10.9 as well.

Please can someone tell me point me to the DDC at BPL, as I am being dim and can't see it on their catalogue?

BPL has chosen to designate biographies as "B", but you're right that if they used the numerical DDC this would be 920. BPL *does* have this title shelved, and we'll allow it for this task.

As long as BPL has it shelved as B for biography only , you'll be fine. As Karen has pointed out elsewhere, there has been a shift in the DDC that allows some other numbers to be also designated with the B, and those (unless another 900 series) will not work for this task.
