Read a book shelved in the 900s (900-999) at the Brooklyn Public Library, using the Dewey Decimal Classification.

Please post any questions about task 10.6 in this thread.

Yes, it is shelved as 910.202

However, let me check further if it qualifies also for any style points.

ok..thanks

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14247 comments Ed, as a journal (which I wasn't exactly keying in on), there is far less text that we could like for it to qualify for styles. You can definitely claim it for the task, but no styles for this one.

ok..that works

Rosemary | 4299 comments This list of the numbers might help people know which books are likely to qualify - history, as well as geography and travel.

Rosemary | 4299 comments What happens if Brooklyn has the book as an ebook only? They don't seem to show the call number in the catalogue, in that case.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14247 comments Brooklyn must have it shelved with the DDC number. I realize that may seem a bit more restrictive than we often do.

Rosemary | 4299 comments The books I was looking at do have one physical copy each on the shelves, but I might read them early in the season, just in case ;) They seem to have more and more ebooks these days.

BPL does move things to storage, but those books still carry the DDC or other label. It does seem as if they've been acquiring more ebooks - those don't hit the YA designation either, so it's not all loss.

Louise Bro | 477 comments I don't read a lot of history, but I'd like to for this challenge.
Does anyone have some good recommendations for narrative history? (No need to check against BPL, I'll do that afterwards).

My plan is to read To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914-1918 by Adam Hochschild. As a bonus, it's on the WWI list for 20.6, and won the Dayton Literary Peace Prize 2012 for a 20.3 combo.

Thank you for the recommendation, Elizabeth. I do like some nice combo points, and to boot I found a copy at my local library in Danish. Problem solved!

By the way, isn't it pretty early (or very late) in your neck of the woods?

I hit the boards here pretty early, but my post above was written about 11:30 am, by which time I'd been up for over 6 hours, so sort of middling. ;-) My time zone is GMT - 9, almost, but not quite, as far west as one can be. Hawaii is another hour west of me.

Kazen | 623 comments Sarah Vowell's books are often in the 900s, and they're awesome on audio, too.

message 18: by Bea (new)

Bea I've been trying to get to this book: Lions of Kandahar: The Story of a Fight Against All Odds. It will fit in this task.

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1725 comments Hochschild is excellent. Timothy Egan] also writes outstanding narrative history.

message 20: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) Can I get an ok for this book? Bound Away: Virginia and the Westward Movement by David Hackett Fischer
In the Brooklyn Link I found other books he's written in the 900's but not this one

Since it's not shelved in the 900s at BPL it doesn't work.

message 22: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5279 comments I enjoyed this one at the end of the spring:

Zeitoun by Dave Eggers

It's about Hurricane Katrina and a man (Zeitoun) who helped victims and then disappeared. It combos with 20.7 and 10.9 as well.

Thumbs up!

Lagullande | 1131 comments My Father's Fortune by Michael Frayn is shelved under 920 at my local library.

Please can someone tell me point me to the DDC at BPL, as I am being dim and can't see it on their catalogue?

BPL has chosen to designate biographies as "B", but you're right that if they used the numerical DDC this would be 920. BPL *does* have this title shelved, and we'll allow it for this task.

message 26: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) | 1008 comments Does that mean anything classed under "B" will count for this task?

Fabulous. Thanks very much. I'm keen to read this as I met Michael Frayn last night - it turns out he's the uncle of one of my friends!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14247 comments Sam wrote: "Does that mean anything classed under "B" will count for this task?"

Yes. I'm very sorry we didn't think of this when the task was announced so that all of you could have been planning.

message 29: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) | 1008 comments That's great news! :) I thought I was pretty limited in my options for this one (I'm trying to get books off my shelves rather than adding to them!) but this will help.

message 30: by Connie (new)

Connie G (connie_g) | 1906 comments Wonderful! I have a few biographies I've been wanting to read.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14247 comments As long as BPL has it shelved as B for biography only , you'll be fine. As Karen has pointed out elsewhere, there has been a shift in the DDC that allows some other numbers to be also designated with the B, and those (unless another 900 series) will not work for this task.
