(view spoiler)[I like watching Darrow evolve through the end of the survival part. He is much more strategic and manages his army not with force or fear, but they respect him. I kind of expected this all to be rigged for a specific prominent figure’s son/daughter, so that wasn’t much of a surprise. Overall, it was a pretty good book. I look forward to reading the next one. Good to know, Saige. I have had this book, a beautiful hardback cover, on my bookcase at home for a couple of years it seems like or maybe more. I would have to look at the publishing date but I have had it for a very long time and every time I pick it up I have put it back down and I don’t know why. But having a buddy read is going to give me the impetus that I need to go forward with it.

13% - End of part 1 (view spoiler)[There's something about this I'm not liking right off the bat, but I can't put my finger on it. I'm not sure if it's the pacing or the tense or the style in general, but it starts off a little odd.

Also, the whole first part is kind of a nonstarter. Like, they argue about this a little bit, there's a discrepancy between the young and older, and then Eo martyrs herself... and then Darrow commits suicide by burying her as well... it just rubs me the wrong way. (hide spoiler)]

All the transformation from red to gold was insane, they're actually physically different! Not just different classes and status, but golds have wings and better eyes. I wonder how they evolved to be so different (hide spoiler)]

69% - End of part 3 (view spoiler)[People were right that it does get better, but I still don't really like the characters, and the pacing seems off to me. I do like Mustang, she seems different and I'm guessing she's not who she says she is. Servo as well, or even if he is pure Gold he might be an ally later on. Roque too if they ever find him.

I don't like the lack of strong females in this novel. I mean, yeah, there's Eo, who kind of stands as a figurehead for Darrow's mission and nothing else. Quinn and Lea are very much background characters with almost no personality, and the men are very stereotypically male.

This is turning into the longest version of Capture the Flag in Percy Jackson that I've ever read. (hide spoiler)]

FINISHED - (view spoiler)[For everything I've heard about this, including that it was the favorite book and inspiration for one of my favorite authors and series, I was severely disappointed by this. It was too passive, too much telling instead of showing, and it was also too much senseless killing and questions going unanswered. The characters just weren't that likable, and didn't really have any personality either, and there was no suspense or real plot twists. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ Okay, I was pretty upset when Pax died. He protected Darrow and Darrow's pride got in the way and let the Jackal escape.

I was not happy when I thought Mustang betrayed Darrow and I'm glad she ended up turning the Jackal over. It's crazy that the proctors went to such lengths to help him and stopped the war before he got any more hurt.

I'm so pumped to read the next book and see what happens now that Darrow is under the Jackal's father. Also want more of Sevro, Roque, and Mustang! (hide spoiler)]

I totally agreed with you Aly!! I love this book and can’t wait to see what you think of Golden Son. I felt the same as all your spoiler thoughts in this last post.
I love so many of the characters in this, especially Sevro, and there’s a new great one introduced at some point in Golden Son.

I'm quite surprised I didn't, actually. Space sci-fi is usually one of my favorite genres and it's the kind of thing I thought I would love, especially because the author of one of my favorite series, Nyxia, cites Brown's series as his biggest inspiration. I read all of those books back in January, and I saw a lot of elements in Red Rising, but I didn't connect much with the story or any characters who didn't die (view spoiler)[(RIP Pax, he carried the whole story for me) (hide spoiler)]. I'd still be interested in Golden Son, but I won't rush to get it (partly because I have way too many other books to read, lol).

Darrow became what I was hoping he wouldn't. With the hopeful ending in book 3, I was wishing for an amazing, perfect Darrow. I was mistaken. I guess that is why I love this series. The characters are so real, and I wouldn't want it any other way...but DARROW! He is not being the best father figure right now. I understand that there is a war going on, but Sevro is an amazing father, so what happened to Darrow? Poor Pax. (hide spoiler)]

50%: (view spoiler)[I liked Ephraim better when I didn't know who he was. After putting two and two together, I became concerned for Lyria. When I realized what Ephraim intended to do, I became mad. I cannot believe he deceived Lyria like that. I actually can, but it doesn't make it any better. The sad part was that the girl has a hard time trusting people, but when she finally finds someone, they stab her in the back. Ephraim is pathetic. (hide spoiler)]

75%: (view spoiler)[Cassius was not someone I cared about in this book, so his death was not sad for me. I never really liked Cassius, and even though he tried to redeem his past mistakes by doing good, I still dislike him. spoiler
Lysander is a strange little creature. I don't know if I like him. Lysander wants Reaper dead and a war to begin. I don't want him to prevail, but I don't want him to die. (hide spoiler)]

Finished: (view spoiler)[I am concerned for Darrow and what his choices mean for him. HE is losing friends and family by the second. Darrow abandoned his family and Sevro. He also made a costly mistake when trying to kill the Ash Lord. Darrrow is messing up big time, and it is making me upset. I keep wishing for the Darrow from the Institute who made all the right choices. This Darrow is dissapointing. I do not understand what Darrow wants to do, but I hope he does not die doing it. Even though Darrow is annoying me to no end, I do not want his family and Sevro to mourn the loss for the rest of their lives. (hide spoiler)]

The ArchGovernor is so cruel and what kind of brainwashing must have been done to these people that Darrow believes they get exactly what they deserve. All other colors are so condescending and make it out as if they are doing a favor by bringing in provisions. And Eo! I was starting to love her and she is gone, just like that. And Darrow? I was sad to see Eo die. I still don't understand it all but I think she was in contact with rebels. Because the broadcast was hacked later to show her full song and her screams of "Break the chains". I think she became Martyr on purpose, it wasn't on impulse.

Darrow is definitely brainwashed, especially since his father's death. He is hopeless and believes they can't change anything. So he became obedient. But let's see how it turns out! (hide spoiler)]
