Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations.

Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity's overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies... even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

I'm actually going to try and participate in the group read this month. I've heard a lot of good things about this one, and people keep recommending it, so I figure I might as well try it out.

It's been on sale at Books-A-Million recently, but I can't decide if I want to own it or just check it out from the library.

If I were you I would pick it up from the store. It's really really good and if you don't like it you can always resell it or give it away.

I just started. Read two chapters so far. Not really into the writing style at this point. Maybe it'll grow on me. Not too into Darrow either.

Finished part one.

Through chapter 9. Not liking this as much as I hoped.
(view spoiler)[Darrow annoys me. I find him arrogant and not very likable. I'm also disappointed in how Eo was introduced and killed just to create the plot. I feel like that could have been done more effectively without her. Or using her a different way. Instead this girl was just thrown in, we were told she was fantastic and everyone loved her, just to watch her die so that Darrow would have a reason to fight back. I'm just never a fan of that. (view spoiler)[A little too much like Hunger Games. And I just don't like how full of himself Darrow is. I don't know...he's just kind of off putting. And nothing really seems to be happening yet. I think that's about to change though. (hide spoiler)]

Through part 2. Liking this a little better now.

(view spoiler)[Darrow is too perfect for my liking. That only works for certain characters and the way he's written just doesn't work for me. I know he's had a hard life, but things are still to easy for him through all this. And I liked Julian. Didn't like that Darrow had to kill him. :( (hide spoiler)]

I get what you're saying about her, and I do agree that we should have known her more if she had that big of an impact on not only Darrow, but the rest of the people as well. Still, I thought the mining concept was pretty cool, and it's the only sci-fi book that I've really liked. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Yeah, I liked him too, but if Darrow didn't do it, Julian would have won, and I just don't find him that interesting. Yeah, Darrow got on my nerves quite a lot throughout the book. Where did you see the HG stuff? I think I was really engrossed and missed it. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[The society is very HG to me. Most dystipias have a lot of similarities though, so I expected it. Also the school and how at first they had to kill each other off and now they're having to form alliances and fight. Is basically like HG again. I expected it somewhat, just didn't think it would be quite this similar I guess. And it's more violent than I expected, somehow. (hide spoiler)]

I've finally finished and I actually quite enjoyed it. 3.5 stars from me. It didn't blow me away, and certain things still annoyed me, but it did improve as I read and now I'm looking forward to continuing the trilogy. Hopefully I'll get to them in August.

Okay,Darrow's character attracted me from the beginning . I liked the world it self and where the story is going. The writing style took me a while to get used to but after that I am enjoying my self.

To think that all those Reds died and were mistreated thought they were at least helping future generations, when cities have already been built on Mars. If that knowledge and Eo’s death don’t motivate Darrow, then I don’t know what would. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Wow, to go through that entire transformation to look and act like a Gold. That is a lot of pain and pressure for Darrow to go through/have on him. He seems up to the challenge, however. Hopefully he doesn’t lose himself in his facade. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I’m actually a bit confused as to why Gold families continue to coddle and spoil their children? If someone was from a prominent family, and they know that their children will go through through the Institute’s challenges why wouldn’t they prepare them? (view spoiler)[It was a little shocking about Titus being a Red in disguise. It is a bit sad that he was so caught up in vengeance that he couldn’t look at the big picture. However, I think Darrow also needs to continue on focusing on his goal. I also wonder what Darrow will do if he becomes Primus. How will he change the future of the other castes? (hide spoiler)]
