SOLVED. YA fiction book about a boy in Roman times [s]

In grade six 1980 I read a book about a boy in Roman times. I don't remember much about it, but he eventually winds up in Rome. I don't remember if he starts out as a slave, or becomes one, but I think that's part of the story.

It wasn't a thick book, and it was part of our curriculum.

Rosemary Sutcliff wrote a lot of books set in that era, and they were certainly around in the 1980s. Hope that might help.

It is really hard to tell. Parts felt familiar, and some parts I thought would be there weren't.

I am going to say it's probably the same great book and I have a bad memory. :)
