SOLVED. MG sci-fi/mystery about kids on a quest in the 5 boroughs in New York [s]

So i read this in about 2012. it was about the five burrows in new york and these two kids/teenagers- or maybe three- go on some sort of quest through them. one of the kids,a girl actually, was from a poor cherokee community and may have lived in caves... at some point the group of kids/teenagers face off with some sort of giant monster creature that lives in the water. (the cover was orange-ish like the sunset on the version i had.)
