Nayce | 10 comments Young Adult Fantasy, at least 15 years old.

The world this book is set in is kind of a grey amorphous fog, and occasionally someone with enough magic can form the fog into little pockets of land or countries. To get from one land to another you have to travel through the fog.

It starts with a young girl, 16 I think, on the day of the lottery. A group of teens will be selected at random to be taken to another land as 'workers' or slaves.

This girl and a guy she knows are selected.

At one point the guy tries to run away and end up in a small country (the size of a valley) that only has girls in it and thinks he's in HEAVEN. The magician who created the world comes back to find him there though, and transforms him. The magician is the only man allowed in his land, so he makes the guy a girl (just in the pants area, the rest stays the same).

They end up in some sort of pirates town or a really untrustworthy place where they are to be auctioned off as slaves.

I dont remember how this book ends, or what the cover looks like.

Scott (smchure) | 77 comments Sounds like the Soul Rider series by Jack L. Chalker. First book in the series is Spirits of Flux and Anchor. This one is definitely not YA, though

Nayce | 10 comments Yup, that's the one.
I figured it was young adult as it was in my high schools library, not in my public one.
Thank you!

Scott (smchure) | 77 comments No problem! Chalker wrote several series, all are weird and imaginative, and well worth the read (the Well World series in particular, along with this one), but he tends to hammer on the same themes over and over.

And wow, that sounds like a great school library! I don't think our school librarian ever stocked anything that was published after she was born (and she was close to retirement in the mid 80's...)
