I'm setting aside Mary Barton for the time being. I finally reached the midpoint, but it's just not pulling me in, though I've been assured by others it starts to move along much faster from this point. Maybe after the holidays...

In the meantime, I have read a few short works of fiction:

* The Christmas Bake-Off by Abby Clements (Short story)
* United in Freedom by Marcia Lynch -- found this in the clearance section at HPB, in like-new condition for only a buck. Middle grade story set during the Civil War.
* Home for the Howlidays by Chloe Cole -- Urban fantasy/Christmas Novella featuring shifters

Ruth Danes | 22 comments Hi Heather L

I have not read Mary Barton but I have read other works by Elizabeth Gaskell: Ruth, Wives & Daughters and her Gothic Tales. Would you not recommend Mary Barton? I can recommend the 3 books I have read, especially Ruth. It is certainly not slow paced.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I'm reading the contemporary romance Until You Loved Me (Silver Springs, #3) by Brenda Novak Until You Loved Me. This is my first Brenda Novak book.

Ruth: I have not read anything else by Eliz. Gaskell, so I've nothing to compare Mary Barton to. It's not that it's a bad story, it was just slow-going for me -- partly because of writing style, partly because I have too much going on right now.

Finished Winter Street by Elin Hilderbrand Saturday night. This is another new-to-me author so I don't know what her other books are like, but I found this to be one of the most depressing Christmas stories ever. Not sure whether I would read the next book in this series or not. I certainly would not pay full price for it.

I've returned to cozies now, where I actually expect mayhem, dysfunction and murder for Christmas.

message 873: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Danes | 22 comments I must admit I prefer my Christmas stories to be upbeat. Anticipated mayhem, dysfunction and murder is another matter!

Karen M | 1436 comments I've read Christmas at the Comfort Food Cafe and now reading Coming Home to the Comfort Food Café. I've skipped the first book since I am on a Christmas hunt and both these books take place at Christmas time. May go back and read the first one.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 304 comments I don't normally post a book unless I've finished it, but I'm making an exception for this one because at 15% into it, it is truly special. An English romantic-suspense with humor. I am in love and it is currently available on Amazon for $0.99.
