Hard Ink #1, Hard as It Gets by Laura Kaye

Tall, dark, and lethal...

Trouble just walked into Nicholas Rixey's tattoo parlor. Becca Merritt is warm, sexy, wholesome--pure temptation to a very jaded Nick. He's left his military life behind to become co-owner of Hard Ink Tattoo, but Becca is his ex-commander's daughter. Loyalty won't let him turn her away. Lust has plenty to do with it too.

With her brother presumed kidnapped, Becca needs Nick. She just wasn't expecting to want him so much. As their investigation turns into all-out war with an organized crime ring, only Nick can protect her. And only Becca can heal the scars no one else sees.

Desire is the easy part. Love is as hard as it gets. Good thing Nick is always up for a challenge..

Loved this one!

Poongothai (poongsa) | 78 comments I read it last month and enjoyed it. It was more towards the romance side rather than the suspense.

There were some funny moments with a puppy. Look out for it

From www.guycounseling.com
Green eyes are extremely unique and very rare! It has been estimated that only 2% of the world’s population has green eyes. To give you an idea of just how special green eyes are, consider this factoid. Currently, it is estimated that around 7 billion people live on the planet. Going by the math, this means only 140 million people have some shade of green as an eye color.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Lisa Kay’s Discussion Questions for Chapters 1 -10

1. Becca’s a nurse, so I like her already. LOL! No, seriously, she also gets points for saying
“But please don’t confuse my needing help with being helpless.” And I like that Becca’s not afraid to defend herself. You?

2. Okay, I admit it; I had to look up “emo hair.” Definition: (view spoiler) I did understand the “Route 69” tee-shirt, though. LOL! So, my question is, what did you think of Jeremy? I like him, but was worried at first that he was the hero in this one. You? I did like his and Nick’s banter, though. Jeremy definitely has Nick’s number. LOL!

3. What do you think of Nick? A bit scary? A bit stubborn. I did believe, considering his history with Becca’s father, Colonel Merritt, he wouldn’t take on her inquire. I also believed he’d be haunted by her, and not just because of her looks and his attraction to her. He seems like a good guy, despite that initial shrug off, so I believed it when he went to her house and staked it out. Plus, I bet he’s more than a little curious. Did you believe this set-up?

4. Do you think Nick’s bad back with come into play in the storyline?

5. Do you think Charlie’s disappearance has anything to do with him fixing his landlord Walt son’s ticket? Or something more sinister?

6. Well… that was nice… that Nick took Becca to his house. And I love a man who cooks for me. And he put her to bed. Thoughts?

7. BOOK QUOTE/Nick’s thoughts:
So, did you know your father’s lies and betrayal led to the deaths of six of my friends, impugned my honor, and ended my military career? That’s a lot to get over. Think Becca’s father really did those things, or is there more to the story?

8. Charlie’s gay. I wasn’t expecting that. Sad that he and his father didn’t make up before his dad passed. No question here, just a comment.

9. Why does Nick have six and not seven men depicted in his tattoo? Was the seventh man killed Becca’s father?

10. Ice cream? Huh, I think Becca had more than ice cream on her mind. Drat Jeremy for interrupting them! LOL! And I sure wasn’t expecting Nick to make that suggestion to release stress. LOL! Oh my! Things got a little hot and heavy there. Was Nick right to bring things to a halt? Comments.

11. Man-oh-man! Things got serious real fast. I wasn’t expecting that! I wasn’t expecting them to go back to her place so soon, and I was expecting the attempted abduction. Yikes! What a place to stop. Or did you keep reading?

Chauncey I love a character like Jeremy, a non-conformist, inappropriate wardrobe/sense of humor and someone that may not be taken seriously but is in fact the voice of reason or conscious for another, in this case Nick.

1. Becca’s a nurse, so I like her already. LOL! No, seriously, she also gets points for saying “But please don’t confuse my needing help with being helpless.” And I like that Becca’s not afraid to defend herself. You?
I really liked her for exactly that sentence! I'm so happy that she is not a damsel and acts fast and very wisely (calling 911 , getting the knife ...). I'm not sure I would have been able to think clearly in the same situation.

LOL!
When he was introduced I thought he was our hero and I have to say I was a bit disappointed. I like him so far but at first I didn't want him to be the hero of this book! I'm sure he'll get his own book though the question is with a man or a woman?!

Nah not scary at all! A bit stubborn though! Yes I believe the set up and I can see him struggling to help the daughter of the man who caused him so much grief and pain but also wanting to help her because she's innocent in all this

4. Do you think Nick’s bad back with come into play in the storyline?
hmmm I'm sure there will a lot of mentioning of it ,I think it would come to play in a love scene :P

5. Do you think Charlie’s disappearance has anything to do with him fixing his landlord Walt son’s ticket? Or something more sinister?
No it doesn't have anything to do with the ticket. It's much bigger than that. It definitely has something to do with what he had found out about his father's betrayal .

6. Well… that was nice… that Nick took Becca to his house. And I love a man who cooks for me. And he put her to bed. Thoughts?
Yes I love a man who would put me to bed :D He was very caring and thoughtful

7. BOOK QUOTE/Nick’s thoughts: So, did you know your father’s lies and betrayal led to the deaths of six of my friends, impugned my honor, and ended my military career? That’s a lot to get over. Think Becca’s father really did those things, or is there more to the story?
I'm hoping there is more to the story and they would find out that her father hadn't betrayed them after all. I think The tattoo of 6 soldiers on his arm will come to play in the future , as far as Becca knows he has lost 7 men including her father.

8. Charlie’s gay. I wasn’t expecting that. Sad that he and his father didn’t make up before his dad passed. No question here, just a comment.
Me neither . I know there is an m/m novella in the series , I'm thinking it's Charlie's and may be Jeremy's?!
9. Why does Nick have six and not seven men depicted in his tattoo? Was the seventh man killed Becca’s father?
I answered this one in #7 . Yes to him he lost 6 men and from Becca's POV he's lost 7 . There will be drama regarding this tattoo

10. Comments.
LOL he was right, from his side of things he did the right thing but if I was Becca I wouldn't have seen it like that and I would have been angry and disappointed.

11. Man-oh-man! Things got serious real fast. I wasn’t expecting that! I wasn’t expecting them to go back to her place so soon, and I was expecting the attempted abduction. Yikes! What a place to stop. Or did you keep reading?
Nope I was good and stopped. And yes things got very serious in a matter of few pages. BTW I loved the puppy

I find it much more believable that the other RS series that we read last year. Hell on Wheels (Black Knights Inc., #1) by Julie Ann Walker
Did you DNF or are you continuing? If continuing then I hope you start enjoying.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 607 comments About Becca's father: If his lies and betrayals resulted in the team losing six men, how can he be totally at fault - He died too! This team lost 6 men and their commander.

This is my first Laura Kaye book and I'm having trouble getting into a groove with it. I'm reading, but my mind is picking this thing apart and not getting lost in the story.

I'm thinking something went very in whatever he was doing. He was using him team to do something illegal and they were ambushed by the other party , a betrayal in betrayal . I'm sure we'll get to know more by the end of the book.

message 44: by Lara (new) - rated it 3 stars

Lara | 2335 comments I agree with ShoSho that I find this book more realistic than Hell on Wheels (Black Knights Inc., #1) by Julie Ann Walker . That series required a lot of suspension of disbelief, and the heroines could be annoying.

However, I also found that this book didn't grab me early on, and I'm not dying to get back to it. I'm not sure why--maybe the mystery is too unclear and the relationship development too obvious. However, if you hold on, things do start to get interesting on the mystery side of things.

message 45: by Lara (new) - rated it 3 stars

Lara | 2335 comments 1. Becca’s a nurse, so I like her already. LOL! No, seriously, she also gets points for saying “But please don’t confuse my needing help with being helpless.” And I like that Becca’s not afraid to defend herself. You? I also really liked that about her. She's a nurse (and an ER nurse at that) and grew up with two brothers and a father in the military, so she's not soft or squeamish. However, she is worried and in over her head. And not afraid to ask for help.

LOL! I was confused when Jeremy first came out, but then realized that the deep voice that first answered Becca probably wasn't his. Jer is great though, and I love how he pokes at Nick so well.

I didn't think Nick was scary, just unfriendly. And I found his casing her house due to guilt a bit of a stretch. It would have been more believable if he hadn't been in the position to say no to her, then decided to follow-up by checking things out.

4. Do you think Nick’s bad back with come into play in the storyline? Of course it will. Whether it's a sympathy situation, it keeps hi for doing something, or he shows how manly he is by powering through the pain, I'm sure it'll show up again.

5. Do you think Charlie’s disappearance has anything to do with him fixing his landlord Walt son’s ticket? Or something more sinister? I agree with ShoSho, it's not the ticket and is definitely something bigger.

6. Well… that was nice… that Nick took Becca to his house. And I love a man who cooks for me. And he put her to bed. Thoughts? He's lusting after her already. He may be conflicted about her father, but he wants in her pants, bad.

7. BOOK QUOTE/Nick’s thoughts: So, did you know your father’s lies and betrayal led to the deaths of six of my friends, impugned my honor, and ended my military career? That’s a lot to get over. Think Becca’s father really did those things, or is there more to the story? I think that regardless of what was behind the scenes that Nick did have that experience. And he mentions ignoring things that didn't add up because he admired the man so much. So, while I'd like to think there was more going on, I think it is possible that it really was a betrayal on her father's part.

8. Charlie’s gay. I wasn’t expecting that. Sad that he and his father didn’t make up before his dad passed. No question here, just a comment. I wasn't expecting it either. I agree that it's sad, but I'm wondering when Charlie found out the bad stuff about their dad. I've been confused about the timing of some past events.

9. Why does Nick have six and not seven men depicted in his tattoo? Was the seventh man killed Becca’s father? I figured that's because he didn't include Becca's dad.

10. Comments. I do think Nick was right to call a halt on things. They just met and hardly know each other, regardless of what Becca says. She wouldn't sleep with any man just because he was good looking and had been in her father's unit.

11. Man-oh-man! Things got serious real fast. I wasn’t expecting that! I wasn’t expecting them to go back to her place so soon, and I was expecting the attempted abduction. Yikes! What a place to stop. Or did you keep reading? Well, I did keep reading but that's because I hadn't paid attention to the day's chapters. At least she was paying some attention to her gut feelings. She knew something was off, even is she wasn't sure what, and was trying to get out.

12. I wasn’t expecting them to stop after he got the condom out and was disappointed. But hey … they finally and after a few unsuccessful attempt got there. LOL. What did you think of how he reacted afterwards? Any idea why he doesn’t like to be called Nicholas?

13. IMO one of the scariest plot in suspense books is dirty cops. What do you think?

14.Aawww the puppy ! I like the cuteness it has added to the book. The antiques she was up to and the naming banter was funny. But I kept thinking aren’t they going to wash her?!

15. What do you think of Nick’s teammate? Who stands out more? Shane? Easy? Becket? Marz? What about the hurt feeling between them?

16. There was a mention of one General Landon Kaine, her father’s colleague. Do you think he is anyone significant?

17.Eeeepp the pinkie! I can’t believe the story went there. Was it a warning or message? What do you think of Becca’s reaction? What do you think is happening with Charlie and the reason for his kidnapping?

18. What are those numbers and letters in the locket? BTW I wanted to smack the cleaning lady for replacing the photos with her own photos. Did she tell the whole truth?

19.Oooh The plot Thickens! Do you still think it has something to do with her father betrayal or is it something else? What is the connection between Charlie(or his father) and Jimmy Church’s and his organization? Could it be drugs?

Vicki (vickiguardianofthewraiths) I would like to comment on the questions but I don't know how to do it like Lara did. Anyone have simple steps to follow???
