SamZ (samwisezbrown) Alright ladies, it's time to start thinking about our group reads for next month. Since school will be out and summer is starting, I thought we'd do something a little different with our book club this month. I usually start new series in the summer because I know I'll have time to finish them before I have to go back to school in the fall (besides having a kiddo in school, I'm a teacher as well). So, we'll be picking 3 of your favorite series to read. Please note: we will not read the WHOLE series as a group, just the first books. Then, if you like them, you have some new series to continue on as. Also, if you are on the 3rd book in a series of 5 (or something else like that), and it's awesome, feel free to nominate it - we'd love to start reading it, too!

Nominations:
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis (if this is chosen we will read them in chronological order, not published order, so the first will be The Magician's Nephew)
Cinder by Marissa Meyer (sci-fi)
Dark Sky at Dawn by Laurie L.C. Lewis (historical fiction)
Emily of New Moon by L.M. Montgomery (classic fiction)
The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale (teen fairy tale retelling)
The Hawk and the Dove by Penelope Wilcock (historical fiction)
Here Burns My Candle by Liz Curtis Higgs (historical fiction)
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (teen fantasy)
The Meeting Place by Janette Oke (historical fiction)
Pillar of Light by Gerald N. Lund (LDS/historical fiction)
Rumors of War by Dean Hughes (historical fiction)
Sands by Kevin L. Nielsen (fantasy)
The Shunning by Beverly Lewis (contemporary/Amish)
Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson (sci-fi)

SamZ (samwisezbrown) I would like to nominate the following series:Cinder is a retelling of Cinderella, except instead of a maid she's a mechanic and instead of losing her shoe she loses her foot (since she's a cyborg - part human, part machine). I love this series because instead of being 4 books about the same person, each book is a different retelling and weaves all four characters together. The first is Cinder (Cinderella), the second is Scarlet (Red Riding Hood), third is Cress (Rapunzel), and the fourth is Winter (I haven't read it yet, but strongly suspect Snow White).

Also, a series that I return to again and again is the Children of the Promise series by Dean Hughes. The first book is Rumors of War. It follows an LDS family and their 6 children during World War II, and how they deal with the difficulties that come from living by your values when the world is in turmoil.

Lastly, I'd like to recommend the Reckoners series by Brandon Sanderson. It is a story of super heroes that are actually evil, and a small group of real people who try to fight them. The books are written with amazing description - it's almost like reading a written version of a graphic novel. And I also loved that while there is some fighting and killing, it's not nearly as violent as other popular teen series right now (e.g. The Hunger Games). I just finished the series for my real life book club, and we LOVED it (even the ladies who aren't big fans of sci-fi). The first book is called Steelheart.

Katrina Lybbert | 72 comments I have been wanting to read the "Cinder" series, so that is a great suggestion.

A series I read years ago and have been wanting to read again is the Song of Acadia series by Janette Oke and T. Davis Bunn. The first book is called The Meeting Place
This series is about the friendship between a French woman and an English Woman in 18th Century Canada at a time with great political tension between the English and French.

Erica T | 16 comments My nominations for a seriers read are-

The Books of Bayern series by Shannon Hale. The first book is The Goose Girl. I read the first one and really enjoyed it but just never did read the rest of the series. It would be fun to reread the first one and then finish the whole series.

The Shunning by Beverly Lewis. I've read several of her other books (the Abram's Daughters series is a favorite of mine) so I would love to read another series by her. This book (the first in her Heritage of Lancaster County series) is her highest rated book so it feels like a must read since I've enjoyed some of her others so much.

SamZ (samwisezbrown) Mary sent me the following message with her nomination:

I would like to nominate SANDS the first in the Sharani Series by Kevin L. Nielsen it is well written and will capture you from the first chapter! If you like fantasy you will love this series!

message 7: by Amy (new)

Amy Prater (amymore1027) | 8 comments All three above are good authors! I also like Rachel Branton (Rachel Nunes) books. Depends on the genre. Let me know! I know my daughter has a copy of Cinder and maybe the series, so that may be first!

Shaela Kay | 23 comments I nominate the Narnia series by C.S. Lewis. I haven't read them in years, but when I did I LOVED them and I wished so much that I had a group of LDS people to discuss them with! So many gospel parallels.

Wow! They all sound good!!!

message 12: by Tracey (last edited May 20, 2016 08:55PM) (new)

Tracey (traceyrb) I would like to nominate Emily of New Moon there are 2 other books in the series. Emily is an orphan girl full of dreams and dignity and the book is beautiful to read.
Also Here Burns My Candle which is basically a re-telling of the story of Ruth but set in Scotland in the time of Bonnie Prince Charlie. There are only 2 books in the series.

message 13: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (traceyrb) I would also like to nominate The Hawk and the Dove This has 9 books in the series. I have never read this series but it looks like it would be good

message 14: by Cindy (new)

Cindy I'm new here so am anxious to get started. I have wanted to The Chronicles of Narnia but never have. Also love fairy tales so The Cinder sounds awesome!

message 15: by Christi (new)

Christi | 50 comments I want to second Dean Hugh's Children of the Promise series (first book Rumors of War)

Narnia is another favorite of mine and Cinder sounds interesting!

I want to nominate either Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief (Rick Rierdon) or the Work and Glory series by Gerald Lund!

message 16: by SamZ (new)
