Sam~~ we cannot see the moon, and yet the waves still rise~~ | 3061 comments I've been on a YA and favorite childhood book kick (Okay for Now was so beautiful I cried, and so was Wednesday Wars, and 13 Little Blue Envelopes was as always super lovely and anything by Cornelia Funke or Sharon Creech makes me feel warm and happy inside. So I guess you could say reading's been a good time lately. (:

Naomi (purplebookdragon) | 1705 comments I absolutely love Sharon Creech and Cornelia Funke, some of my favorite books from elementary school are by them. I'm so glad they're being appreciated.

Right now I'm reading My Lady Jane (The Lady Janies #1) by Cynthia Hand which is kinda weird but also I like it. This morning I started The Shadow of the Wind (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, #1) by Carlos Ruiz Zafón , and I'm also in the middle of Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer, #1) by Laini Taylor , which I really like but it's going really slowly. It's really long.

Sam~~ we cannot see the moon, and yet the waves still rise~~ | 3061 comments Yasss Shadow of the Wind is so underrated. The writing is beautiful and the characterization is superb, and the plot has so many twists and can you tell I just love it.

Naomi (purplebookdragon) | 1705 comments I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm only like 100 pages in but it's really good. I hope I continue to enjoy it.

Sam~~ we cannot see the moon, and yet the waves still rise~~ | 3061 comments Glad you're enjoying! I need to read it again! My goal has always been to read it in its original Spanish. And I'm getting closer to being able to do that(:

Megan Mweemba (meganlovesbooks) | 3196 comments Dead to You by Lisa McMann

Started listening to the audiobook of this solely because my bby Aaron Tveit is the narrator. Not sure if I'll finish it or not, but it got off to a pretty decent start at least...

message 257: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (purplebookdragon) | 1705 comments I love Aaron Tveit!

Megan Mweemba (meganlovesbooks) | 3196 comments Okay I'm finally on summer break so I have time to read for fun again. :)

Finished On the Other Side by Carrie Hope Fletcher which was okay.

And now I'm re-reading To All the Boys I've Loved Before (To All the Boys I've Loved Before, #1) by Jenny Han for about the fifth time because I just bought the final book in the trilogy and want a refresher, and it feels appropriate since one of the characters goes to study anthropology in Scotland which I am also doing soon. :)

Naomi (purplebookdragon) | 1705 comments What dd you think of On the Other Side? I love Carrie, but I'm hesitant to pick up her books. I really want to like it but I'm scared that I won't. In general I'm wary of famous people publishing books really easily.

Yeah, I felt the same way going into it. I thought her writing was generally quite good but the plot and the "magical realism" was where it fell short for me. I wrote a more detailed spoiler-free review if you want to read that: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 261: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (purplebookdragon) | 1705 comments I read the review you wrote. I'm kind of nervous about it. I don't want this to influence how I see her. I've read books written by people I follow in the past, and when I don't like the book it affects how I see the person. Like if I think it's really bad I respect the person less...

Yeah I get what you mean. For me personally, even after not totally loving the book, I still love Carrie. And I think probably as she writes more and gets more experience in that realm her books will get better, so maybe wait and read one of the next ones if you're that nervous? :)

message 263: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (purplebookdragon) | 1705 comments I'll probably still read it eventually. I just won't go out of my way to look for it or order it online. And yeah, I'm sure she'll get better. Most people do. In general YouTubers writing books is an interesting topic to discuss.

message 264: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (purplebookdragon) | 1705 comments So this past week I went kinda crazy and bought four books. And I know for a fact that two of them I won't actually read in the immediate future.

I got My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises by Fredrik Backman and Prince of Fools (The Red Queen's War, #1) by Mark Lawrence , both which I'm excited to read soon.

And then I got War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy . I know it's gonna take me forever to read it, but I've become obsessed with the musical Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, and I'm in the middle watching the mini-series of War and Peace, and I feel like if there's ever a time I'm going to be very intrested in reading this book, it will be now. And I've been trying to read more classics in general. We'll see how it goes.

And finally I bought הסנדלר מכוכבאן by Erez Zadok ת, which I got in Hebrew because it was national book week here. I prefer to read in English when I'm reading for pleasure, but I should be reading more in Hebrew anyway. I have a feeling it'll be a while till I actually pick this up.

As to what I'm actually reading now, I'm reading The Reluctant Assassin (W.A.R.P., #1) by Eoin Colfer , which is kinda random. I raided my younger brothers shelves a few months ago to find some new books so I wouldn't buy so many this year (ha), and I found this. So far I'm actually really enjoying it. It's nice to read some more middle grade type stuff.

message 265: by Megan (new)

Megan Mweemba (meganlovesbooks) | 3196 comments Finished re-reading the first two in the series and now I'm on Always and Forever, Lara Jean (To All the Boys I've Loved Before, #3) by Jenny Han which I'm super excited and a little nervous about, but so far it's good!

Isaac | 8014 comments I'm finally trying to start reading again and I'm working on 4 books that I've started in the past but never finished because my attention span is the worst. Fingers crossed.

Good luck! It's always hard to get back into reading after taking a break. Start with something easy and light that you know you'll like.

message 268: by Sum (new)

Sum | 846 comments I finished Last Man in Tower by Aravind Adiga recently, the third book I've read by this guy and I remain snatched. If you're trying to get into more culturally diverse literature I highly recommend. Masterji reminded me so much of my own grandpa loll

I feel this, I've been in a huge reading slump all year and I'm just starting to read semi-regularly again lol .... Good luck Hayden!

Anyway yeah it's been a while since I posted on here, whoops! Well, right now I'm about halfway through:

The Inexplicable Logic of My Life by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

Which I love so far!

I'm also reading:

The City's Son (The Skyscraper Throne, #1) by Tom Pollock

I bought it from the used book section of the library like a year ago and never picked it up until now, but it's really cool so far! Definitely .... bizarre, but I'm really enjoying it.

Andddd recently I've been delving into manga lol so in the past week I read:

僕のヒーローアカデミア 1 Boku No Hero Academia 1 (My Hero Academia, #1) by Kohei Horikoshi 僕のヒーローアカデミア 2 Boku No Hero Academia 2 (My Hero Academia, #2) by Kohei Horikoshi

...And I'm working on the third one now. They're a lot of fun so far!!

Megan Mweemba (meganlovesbooks) | 3196 comments Currently re-reading The Name of the Star (Shades of London, #1) by Maureen Johnson

I read it several years ago and really enjoyed it, and this time I'm gonna read the sequels as well. :)

@TMK - I've seen a few episodes of the anime too! (I'm sort of watching & reading at the same time lol.) I agree, it's very cute and fun but also like?? very emotional?? and all the characters are really great. I'm enjoying the series immensely!

Megan Mweemba (meganlovesbooks) | 3196 comments The Madness Underneath (Shades of London, #2) by Maureen Johnson

I started re-reading the first one right at the same time as my summer class starting, so it took forever to finish, but hopefully I'll get through the next ones pretty quickly!

Unknown poet (Anna) (unknown_poetanna) I'm reading a biography on Martin Luther King Jr.

Okay I'm actually going to set this one aside because I'm over halfway through and practically nothing has happened, I'm just not feeling it. (And my summer is quickly flying by so I want to get around to some other books!!)

So now I started:

As You Wish Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes

Naomi (purplebookdragon) | 1705 comments I've had a really producitve reading week. I FINALLY finished American Gods by Neil Gaiman and The Republic of Thieves (Gentleman Bastard, #3) by Scott Lynch . I've been in the middle of both for literally years. I have no idea why it took me so long to finally finish them. I really liked both.
I also read both Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1) by Leigh Bardugo and Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows, #2) by Leigh Bardugo within a few days of each other. I loved them and couldn't put them down.
Finally, two nights ago I stayed up ridiculously late because I simply couldn't go to bed until I had finished Gather the Daughters by Jennie Melamed . It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Super haunting and terrifying.
I'm also in the middle of The Angel's Game (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, #2) by Carlos Ruiz Zafón which I'm really enjoying.
And I just got back to my parents house today and I was feeling nostalgic so I'm re-reading First Test (Protector of the Small, #1) by Tamora Pierce .

Sam~~ we cannot see the moon, and yet the waves still rise~~ | 3061 comments The Angel's Game is great! Have you read the book that comes before it, The Shadow of the Wind? It was my favorite book growing up. Although both are great as stand-alones!

Yeah I read it earlier this year and really liked it. I also read The Prince of Mist (Niebla, #1) by Carlos Ruiz Zafón which was good.
