Welcome to all the new members! :-) Happy new year to all.
@Vishal, I've read very contrasting reviews of To Kill a Mocking Bird. I myself gave it a go eons back but lost interest and stalled the read then. Would like to know your review of it to see if I can continue where I left off!
@Pradosh, yes, our last BOTM was in August, I hope to revive it from this month or next month onwards :-) Looking forward to your participation then.

- Work in the banking industry
- 37
- if only I could remember
- not a strong believer of genrification as I find a little of all genres in a single book. But what does hold interest is subjects.
Indian mythology fascinates me especially Mahabharata and its related stories and I have to read any that come my way. Be it the Blue God, Kaunteya, Yugantar etc. Love the interpretations ...do share if you have some.
Amongst the quick reads there is the Alex Cross series, Myron Bolitar series, books about Mumbai ( Shantaram, maximum city, sacred games), the No1 Ladies Detective agency series, Grisham novels, gone girl and its offshoots series, dan brown and his offshoots series and blah blah
Comic strips ... ah the fun. All time fave- Calvin and Hobbes! Also like Garfield, Asterix, TinTin, tinkle, Chachaji Chaudhary and lot more.
When I need to really get some good sleep I go down the path of heavy reads like a brief history of time, history of god, genghis khan ( yes its heavy) and a lot more that I don't remember!
In a nutshell give me a good book and bloody well leave me alone!

It's been a slow reading year for me so far due to other commitments. :( Hope 2017 is treating you better.

Also, this year has been better in terms of the quality of reads, so no complaints on that front.

How goes your reading this years, folks? I'm deeply apologetic for my negligence of this group for the past few months. I'll endeavour to become more regular henceforth.
How many of you are participating in the reading challenge this year? How many books have you pledged? Mine is a meagre 50 books which I am about halfway through. Hoping to expand the goal sometime later this year as I have some time in my hands to tackle a good amount of reading.

I love reading, and started reviewing after I got my kindle. I love traditionally published books but I also enjoy supporting indie authors.
I have a review blog as well (link in my profile) - I started just this year, so suggestions are very welcome. I was thinking of adding other sections to my blog also, so if anyone does check out my blog, do DM me and let me know :)
I'd love to get feedback!
Cheers

We are all talking about how many books we have read and setting goals how many we will read.
Since I have recently joined this group, I find people mostly telling us about when they started reading. Perhaps that is what Goodreads is about to encourage reading.
However, I have a couple of questions to ask, particularly the authors. When did you begin to write? And when did you publish your first book?
After having it published, how did you get your book reviewed? I do not mean the comments of your friends but proper reviews? I have three books to my name till date, "An Expression of Two Eyes" written when I was turning thirty, "Raising Pups & Children"and my latest is "Letter from Dad".
"An Expression of Two Eyes" was reviewed by newspaper Financial World. "Raising Pups & Children" was reviewed favourably by "Dogs & More" and "Creature Companions" but I would like to know what the readers who do not know the author have to say about the books.

First of all, I am not a bookworm. I started reading since last year and as of now, I almost finished 17 books. Currently, I am developing the skill of reading. I mostly read paperbacks and that too only during commuting in a local train. In this way, I try to read 5 days a week.
I mainly like books based on magic realism genre, like those by Marquez, Murakami, Morrison, etc.
However, I read thrillers (Agatha, Patterson, Grisham) as well. Usually, I try to experiments with books by bringing something unusual to my shelf.

Interesting to come across a govt. civil servant interested in reading classics. It does not make any difference where you start so long as you are reading. However, as a civil servant I feel that you must evolve a 360 degree vision and be open to everything particularly in a country like India with all its variety and spice, and that can only come through reading everything that comes your way, good, bad and the ugly. Initially you might be reading only them as stories but then after sometime you begin to see the through what the author wants to say. In any case, no one reads to a fixed schedule unless it is someone's bread and butter. Happy reading...

Haha..Thanks. Its really nice to see a reply from Goodreads Author.
During my civil services prep I have read a lot and on varied topics ranging from History (Ancient, Medieval, Modern, World), Polity, Economy, Sci-Tech, International affairs etc........But that was for exam, a kind of compulsion. Now I read for sheer joy of reading, which I wanted to do since my childhood. You are right about good, bad and ugly....as long as it is 'Right'. Its just that I wanted to start with something that interests me, best of the lot. But as I have already said I am open to any suggestion/recommendation by fellow readers. Looking forward to your recommendations. :)

Thanks for your positive response. Assuming that you are 31 years and a civil servant, I would suggest that you begin with "Reading Lolita in Tehran" if you have not already read it. In fact I recommend this book to every youth of this country because it reflects the times. Then read Arunadhati Roy's latest "The Ministry of Utmost Happiness" which would interest you since you are in the IAS. Like with all serious authors both have to be read, unfortunately, like a text book. Roy's interviews have appeared in many newspapers but the real impact of the book will take a little more time to hit the Indian public. After that, you can try reading my book Letter from Dad, a small book of 100 odd pages. No compulsion. I have been involved in a lot of discussion with other readers and authors and trying to figure out what interests them in the present. It is amazing that a lot of them our still interested in the old classics. At one time I had put on FB a list of some 50 books that had changed my thinking. If interested I can forward these to you as well. Incidentally, I have a retired IAS neighbour and he reads everything under the sun. We have had some very interesting and long discussions about a lot of subjects. I actually call him my beta reader.
All the best

Myself Sumesh Nair, working in TCS (Mumbai).
I am not a bookworm, I started reading books late last year and I have completed 8 books as of now. Wish to read lots of book ahead. Reads while travelling or whenever I get an opportunity.
Open for suggestions or recommendations from GoodReaders ;)

I'm a college sophomore currently pursuing my bachelors in Computer Science.
I used to be a bibliophile throughout my childhood, but as academics grew more important ,I read textbooks instead of novels;) Now,with free time in college,I've got back into it.
While having no fixed genre,I tend to gravitate towards non-fiction and the classics.
Cheers!

Hi, I was browsing through some of the mails and came across the one I wrote to you a long time ago. I had suggested Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Booksto you. Now you could add another book to this genre Cry of the Peacock and you will learn the contrasting views of someone observing a country from the top and another from the bottom of the same nation/government....

It is great to be part of this group and I hope to interact with all of you soon. I'm Shashank, a banker, based out of Mumbai.
I love reading and goodreads especially has helped broaden my mind with its exhaustive book lists and recommendations. I prefer the classics and also quite into non fiction relating to psychology and history these days!
Any recommendations from your side or if you would like to discuss a book would be much welcome! Looking forwarding to our future interactions : )

Likewise, we have creative writing when we talk about authors. At times you will come across books where it is quite clear that the author wants to project only one point of view and pass it on as creativity. Therefore, you must read books countering such points of view before you come to any conclusion. The most important thing about reading a book is keeping an open mind. It takes a long time before one can really take a balanced view of things.

Recently I read almost all genres, save the unrealistic ones. I'm gonna not explore further next year and consolidate all the good books knowledge I've accumulated from the past by rereading the best ones like "Thinking Fast and Slow" and many more.
I wonder why this group is inactive!

My name is Ankit Agrawal. I am 27 years old and a self employed small time businessman.
I am not exactly from Mumbai but overnight journey away from Mumbai, a district called Dhule in Maharashtra itself (I hope this isn't a problem for me to be a part of this group)
I started reading in 2077-08 but I quite during sometime in 2013 as I faced a spell from depression and have now started reading again in 2018
I like reading fiction, any kind of believable fiction that is. Fantasy and Sci-fi are not my kind of stuff at all. I am choosy on non-fiction as well. Some of my favourite writers are Jeffrey Archer, Ken Follet, Charles Dickens, Stieg Larsson etc..

fiction and non fiction books available @50₹ each

This is Anand Sharma - I work in the technology sector, and live in the North-western suburbs of Mumbai.
Have been reading for a while, and am now stuck between a kindle and an old pile of books I am re-reading (due to lockdown!)
Here to share knowledge, book recommendations, and sharing physical books.
The last books I have read are:
1) Apprenticed to a Himalayan Master - Sri M
2) Sapiens
3) The Sixth Extinction
4) The 40 Rules of Love - Elif Shafak
5) Becoming - Michelle Obama
On my reading list next is
1) Untangled - book about raising teenage girls
2) Moonwalking with Einstein
That's all...let's stay in touch here!
Looking forward to great interactions!

I'm Sahil, I'm twenty, and currently a student in finance (Chartered Accountancy) but equally interested in the fields of psychology and philosophy. Still rather unaware about the road ahead, but in a good place nonetheless.
Although I've been reading since my childhood, in the lockdown I've indulged in the hobby and began reading at a faster pace and a more consistent basis. Previously, I read specific books which caught my attention, and now I tend to read and find books that fit my mood at the time.
I enjoy both fiction and non-fiction, though I prefer fiction. My favorite books share the trait of the protagonist inculcates some psychological or moral dilemma and undergo the journey and growth to change as people. Character development is usually my primary requirement for a book. (The technical genre for this is called "Bildungsroman" if I'm not wrong)
My favorites would have to be The Golden Gate, by Vikram Seth; or Kafka on The Shore, by Murakami.
