Emily (emalderwood) | 43 comments Looking for French books, preferably historical fiction, fiction, or fantasy genres. Graphic novels are fine but no picture books... I am trying to improve my French and need some books to challenge my reading. Children's novels are a good reading level at the moment, but feel free to post other suggestions as I would appreciate all ideas.

Liralen | 766 comments Do you want only things that were originally written in French? I've had luck with translated versions of familiar books -- e.g., Laura Ingalls Wilder, George Orwell, Agatha Christie.

G.G. (ggatcheson) Maybe try Arsene Lupin. He's what they call a gentleman burglar.

This one is free on Amazon Kindle.

The English version used to be free too. It could have helped.

There is a non free ebook with both English and French version though it's 4.99$

Either way, they have samples you can read on all the Maurice Leblanc's Arsene Lupin, so it could help you decide if that's for you or not.

G.G. (ggatcheson) On that note, Liralen has the right idea too. You can always try a book you've read in English so you know the story a little before you start. There are plenty of great translations out there. I read most of Stephen King's and Dean Koontz books in French along with the Fantasy writers Weiss and Hickman and plenty more. I only started reading in English about twenty years ago.

In first year high school French we had to read L'étranger by Albert Camus. My guess is the vocabulary wouldn't be any harder than a children's chapter book, and it's not a particularly long book.

Emily (emalderwood) | 43 comments Liralen, books that have been translated are definitely an option :)
I have had some luck before with that, especially if I have read the book before, because then I know the gist of what the book is about.

Pamela Love | 1510 comments La Symphonie Pastorale by Andre Gide. La symphonie pastorale One of the earliest books I read in French class.

Mateo Falcone by Prosper Merimee. Mateo Falcone

It's really a short story, but it's apparently available as a book. This is the only work I was assigned to read both in English class and in French.

stormhawk | 183 comments I have the Harry Potter books in German. If i really get stuck I can check the English editions, but I try not to do that. Usually is just a word here or there that I can't puzzle out. Or try a classic like Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, or Beauty and the Beast.
