I read GeorgeI read last month, and I loved it! Middle grade novel about George, who knows she is really a girl. I was really impressed with the balance of emotion in a novel aimed at the 8-12 year old set - not an easy task. It's a really quick read, and I'd recommend it to anyone. I know that If I Was Your Girl just came out, too - hoping to get my hands on it this month.
I've looked up a few different books, but since I'm ignorant about transgender issues I will most likely pick a non-fiction book. However, I know there are plenty of fictional sci-fi books that incorporate transgender characters and gender fluidity into their storylines. Ursula K. Le Guin, Marge Piercy to name a couple. I have Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More (nf), Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity (nf), and If I Was Your Girl (f) on my radar for anyone looking and having to clue of where to start (I tend to follow the "books like this" list on and on and on.)
Happy reading everyone!
I recently read Symptoms of Being Human and it was an excellent YA Novel about a gender fluid teen. I'd highly recommend it.
I'll be reading If I Was Your Girl if my copy will ever get here. In case any of you didn't know it's got a trans main character, the author is trans, and the model on the cover is trans. Also if any of you are more interested in reading a book by a trans author than you are in reading one about a trans person the author of the Vladimir Tod series came out as trans last year and now goes by Zac Brewer. I don't believe he's written any books with a trans character though, although I may be wrong
If I Was Your Girl was really good! The author admits to simplifying some stuff to hopefully reach a wider audience but it still seems to be a pretty authentic look at being a transgender teen. The author also did a better job at portraying the South than a lot of other authors, in my opinion at least.
