Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12853 comments Darn. Won't be joining, as still doing the right side up challenge :(

unless the challenge itself starts after it ends?

message 152: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments June 21 is the end of right side up... you won't have too many weeks of overlap. Some of the fun of doing multiple challenges is finding books books that fit multiple tasks! Maybe you will reconsider and give it a try

message 153: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i would think that if they are going to announce the challenge tomorrow then it probably won't start until the beginning of july anyway. sign ups are usually a few weeks and then they have to make all the teams and formalize everything before we start

I think I just signed up for the 2016 WOBBLE. 😲🥴
...so excited for WOBBLE

I already have my books worked out for Right Side up, and they were hard enough without trying to fit them to anything else, lol.
Maybe if it was in a few months when I can afford to buy books again, but right now I've got to stick to what I already own.

Next challenge I'm in!

Hi guys! :D

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I'd be surprised if they had it starting before Right Side Up ended.

I have my hopes that I can still do it, if I want to, with my honeymoon coming up. That's not until October so I should be good. Fingers and toes crossed.

Working on it now, please don't mutiny!

Since Good Omens is a perfectly good reason to be late, you are excused - at least from me ;-)

Wheel is just a spell out, so any books you read for RSU can be used for the spell out - doesn't need to be fancier than that!

Knowing my luck, the letters won't match... I've got individual challenges on the go where I've been trying to spell out the same word all year, lol.

Is it just one book a week to read then? Provided I can match the books I have planned for Right side up to it, it may work.
But I've got a few books I've been putting off for ages that I wanted to get out of the way but are too short to fit the challenges (99 pages, etc). I was going to get them out of the way after right side up, but wouldn't want to feel guilty if I'm spending my time reading non-qualifying stuff and costing the team points?

Sorry about all the questions. I've not done a team challenge before, so not sure how it all works, lol.

message 171: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
So, if you join you'll be sorted into a team (balanced so each team is reading approximately the same no of books)
There's a wheel (to be revealed later) with words on it, and each team will get their own spin.
The challenge then is for the team to work together to spell out their word as many times as possible in the week, after which they will get a new word.

The spell out rules are pretty generous : title (inc or exc the article if there is one), author (first or last name) or characters (significant - ie speaking & plot relevant, first or last name.

If you explain to your team that you are constrained because of other challenges they'll make sure you get the pick of the letters, so you can contribute.

You aren't expected to spell out the word by yourself!

Wheel is usually the easiest, lowest key of NBRCs team challenges, so it's a good one to dip your toe into... IMHO! ;-P

Oh, and if you sign up for one book a week you can fit in little books around that - if you are meeting your minimum the team won't mind :)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12853 comments Cat wrote: "Oh, and if you sign up for one book a week you can fit in little books around that - if you are meeting your minimum the team won't mind :)"

Ah, ok, so I can just sign up for one? That would make life a lot easier, as much as I really enjoy the challenges, the worst part is not being able to read the books you want to because they won't fit. Especially if the books you then find that do fit turn out to be awful, lol!

I'm being nagged to read the Series of unfortunate events books, but as they don't meet the word count, I've been putting them off since December! Oops! ;)

If you do sign up for one a week (i.e 4 a month), it'd make a mods life WAY easier if you don't suddenly start reporting in 20 a month! There's a science, or possibly art, or probably occult dabbling in the entrails of dead books to putting teams together to balance numbers, so the more accurate you can be to what you report the happier your Mod Squad will be ;-)

I'll check them as I go, but I don't think any of them will be over 160 pages? I'm just hoping they'll be worth the wait! lol!

Binge reading the Series of Unfortunate Events can get a bit tedious - take a breather every three I reckon

Thanks for the warning ;)

I also have a couple of ARCs I should probably get to... I'm sure they've been out so long now they can practically be considered classics!

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Cat wrote: "Wheel is usually the easiest, lowest key of NBRCs team challenges, so it's a good one to dip your toe into... "

Lol, my first team challenge was Cutthroat, which goes some way towards explaining why I get so rigid and paranoid in subsequent challenges. 😆

If you do sign up for one a week (i.e 4 a month), it'd make a mods life WAY easier if you don't suddenly start reporting in 20 a month! There's a science...

This makes sense... But it should be said, if you normally read, say, two 300 page books per week, but you (or your whole team) decide to read one 600 page book per week instead because in Wheel that has a much higher point value, that changes your overall reported numbers. Same in reverse, if you normally read epics, but decide to read a ton of short books instead.
It is possible to end up winning with fewer, longer books and more points, and also possible to win with tons of shorter books at lower point values, if the whole team gets on board.
Strategy! 🙂

message 182: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8050 comments My reading numbers are crazy this year so far, namely due to the Turf Wars challenge, where I read a ton of really short books. I do tend to read more when there is a challenge, but the actual page count doesn't vary all that much for me. (Unless there is a Quidditch match or the like on the line).

message 183: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I usually read more than usual during Wheel and Tower teams. But it's rarely a huge difference unless I get on a binge of shorter books.

For those worried about the week over lap with Right Side up, don't forget it's not just title that is used in spell outs: authors, characters, audio book narrators, series names also count.

Last wheel game my team got the same word like 3 weeks in a row. It was short but it got tiresome trying to find books that worked for the same 4-5 letters.

message 184: by [deleted user] (new)

Personally, what I’m worried about is being able to read a book a week but would really like to play

message 185: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i've only read the first series of unfortunate events book but i did the audio and it was very good. and it was only like 3 hours so even if you can't use them for wheel then maybe you could sneak in an audio book here and there while driving or something? i was actually planning on listening to a few more in july so i'll just have to work them in around between wheel books lol

message 186: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Slytherpuff, if you want to play then you need to commit to a minimum book each week

message 187: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 3007 comments A Series of Unfortunate Events should work page-wise depending on which edition you read, but you'll need to double check wordcount for a couple of them as I remember the first one being less than 25k words but at least some of the later books are definitely 40k+!

I'm the same between Turf Wars and the Right-Side Up challenge. I have several longer books on my tbr that have been gathering dust because it has made more sense to read mostly shorter books for my challenges so far this year. I'm looking forward to digging into some longer books finally.

Buddy reads for challenges is more of a Towers thing. Feel free to buddy read during the challenge but there will be no extra points during Wheel o'Brown for them.
I also had a lot of fun during Towers last year with all the buddy reads (reading rather than creating the threads....that was time consuming!!) ;my favorite series was Anne Bishop's "The Others". I'm next in queue for Wild Country!! Which was your favorite Christina?

It's a very good song indeed! Reminds me of my university days, as my local had a fondness for Van Morrison so we were guaranteed to hear it if we were in there for more than an hour!
