Urban Fantasy discussion
Welcome to the Group! Introduce yourself...

My fave authors are Charlaine Harris, Dean Koontz, Christine Feehan.
I am a mom of 9 year old son who is also a little book worm.
I love animals. Currently I have two cockateils,4 rats, 4 dwarf frogs, 25 chickens, 2 cats, one betta fish and a partridge in a pear tree just kiddingabout the partride lol.
I like to read about almost anything but vampire, shifters are my current favorite genre.
I am a New Yorker but not the city more like the horsey and moo cow part.

I'm thrilled to find this site and this group!

I'm Julieanne, and live in Ireland! I love to read! I am married with four children and I think I drive everyone mad!
I have been very creative for most of my life, well not all 32 yrs, but a fair part of my life has been devoted to writing!
I love nothing more than a James Patterson book, I'm addicted to him! But I love anything by Richelle Mead, P.C and Kristen Cast, Charlaine Harris and Anthony Horowitz! In fact, give me a good book and I'll read it!
An old school friend told me about this website and I was so excited I had to come and see for myself! Thumbs up already!
Feel free to add me, I like making new friends, even virtual ones!

My pen is Alice V (not inspired by the Twilight series!) I write fantasy, horror, and erotica. Currently writing a bio on my love life too. I have a wide range of reading and writing interest that ranges from many different genres. Right now I'm reading Chrisitna Dodd's Scent of Darkness and I've put HP Lovecraft on hold along with City of Bones because they're in boxes right now (moving). Other than that, I look forward to spending some time in this group.

My name is Kenzie and I just joined Goodreads yesterday. I'm still learning the ropes. I have just recently found this genre. Previously I was into crime novels and mysteries plus the occasional silly chick-lit. My boyfriend has been trying to get me into fantasy but I just couldn't... Urban Fantasy is the perfect blend for me. I wanted to read Nightlife but I couldn't find it so I started Trick of Light. Anyway I can't wait to discuss books and I'm so happy to have found this site!

Cool! I was thinking about putting together a sexy Halloween collection of death and destruction but haven't gotten that project off the ground yet.

You're very welcome, Melanie Jackson. I have many of your books. I noticed that you haven't joined the Goodreads Author program. You have an author page
Melanie Jacksonbut there's nothing in the profile except your website URL. Joining the Author Program will enable you to control the content of your author page. At the bottom of the page there's a hyperlink to let Goodreads know that you're here and they can help you get started in the Author program.

Hi Desiree. Have just joined this group and was reading through people's intros and was curious; can you remember what book it was that your friend at work got you to read that started your addiction? I am always interested to know what books change a person's attitude to a genre, or get them into one in the first place.
Thanks, Yvette :)

I started off with Dean Koontz as well! A teacher lend me his book - not sure why he would suggest a 12 year old to read horror, but I'm eternally greateful :D

I just finished reading Vamped by David Sosnowski. It was a really different novel that was more about what the world might be like if vampires had turned everyone so that humans were extremely rare. It was really well written (almost like watching a movie as I read it his descriptions were so well done) and very witty; I'd recommend it if you're looking for something different!

Again, welcome.

I just read Nightlife by Rob Thurman, and recently read Moon Called by Patricia Briggs and A Local Habitation by Seanan McGuire.

I was really big into Holly Lisle, and urban fairytales, but the last few years (since Van Helsing basically) I've been big into werewolves/vampires/ghosts, etc.
I read everything put in front of me, whether it's brochures, ingredient lists, advertisements. Words fascinate me, especially the root forms, so you can find me reading the dictionary or practicing Latin!
I'm really big into the Vampire Diaries, and recently got into the Strange Angels series. If the lead character isn't written strongly, or ends up being a type of Bella, then I tend to put it down.

What?
Bella's tough. Bella standing up for herself and the people she cared about against very powerful people (especially her boy friend), was the overarcing theme of the series.

I have three books published, two collections of poetry and one novel The Chosen, which I'm not sure if it should be deemed Urban Fantasy. It takes place in modern settings, with characters living in our world. But the main characters are Adam and Lucypher. Yeah, those guys. It's far (FFFFAAAAAAARRRRRR) from a religious book, I suppose Urban Fantasy using religious iconic characters is probably the best way to categorize it.
Anyway, that's who I am. I live in Charlotte, NC, so if anybody is around here, lemme know.

John, I live straight up I-77 almost at the VA border near Mount Airy. Howdy, neighbor.

Okay, Hi, I'm Misty. I'm 23, soon to turn 24, and I live in Alabama. I have two dogs, a full time job, love anime and outdoor recreation, and am currently trying very hard to find a class that can teach me seamstress skills.
Currently reading Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Just started, actually. Got into it because of an online comic called 'Girls Next Door' that is mainly a Labyrinth/Phantom of the Opera crossover with vast amounts of references to other works. Read Good Omens because of it as well.
The books on my shelves? I only recently became familiar with the term 'Urban Fantasy', which I think is best appropriate. I mean, I have Mortal Instrument series, Twilight series, Maximum Ride series, Artemis Fowl series, Sunshine, Darkest Powers series, Harry Potter 1-5...
Then I have classics like Phantom of the Opera, Pride and Prejudice, The Counte of Monte Cristo, Lord of the Flies, Adventure of Huckleberry Finn, etc. With a sprinkling of books such as Battle Royal and Wicked thrown in for good measure. Yeah, sorry, started drawing a blank on the books of my shelves.
I don't stick to a particular genre, just wander around until a book catches my attention or I hear about one that come highly recommended.

Favorite UF books: Matthew Swift series - Kate Griffin
Currently reading: Felix Castor series - Mike Carey

What sparked your interest in the genre, Miranda?

Well I've always liked the typical urban fantasy trademarks (at least since I can remember), I just didn't realize that those kinds of books had their own category until fairly recently. I think I first heard the term when I was reading reviews of A Madness of Angels - Kate Griffin.

I'm a big fan of urban fantasy, especially the fairie kind. I also love ghost stories, paranormal ficton & epic fantasy, though I don't like it when authors get too over technical or over explain everything, e.g. I loved Traci Harding's Ancient Future Trilogy but her Mystique Trilogy was fun in the beginning but by the third book it had become overcomplicated and had lost my interest entirely.
Look forward to further discussions in this forum :-)

Here is the description of Urban Fantasy from the main page/description:
Urban fantasy is a subset of contemporary fantasy, consisting of magical novels and stories set in contemporary, real-world, urban settings--as opposed to 'traditional' fantasy set in wholly imaginary landscapes. The urban fantasy protagonist faces extraordinary circumstances as plots unfold in either open (where magic or paranormal events are commonly accepted to exist) or closed (where magical powers or creatures are concealed) worlds. A romantic subplot may or may not exist within the context of the story.

I currently contribute review content for www.nightowlreviews.com and nocturne romance reads.

I've been reading fantasy books most of my life, and recently stumbled upon urban fantasy (courtesy of Briggs' Mercy Thompson series!), and fell completely in love with the genre. I'm always looking for good recs :)
Nice to know you all!

I just joined this group last week and this is my very first post!
I read anything and everything and have been a reading nut for years, but my obsession is Urban Fantasy and PNR.
My husband calls me a machine because I read too much lol
Just wanted to join this group to discuss some UF books and to get some recommendations on other books that I'm missing out on!

I've been on Goodreads for a while and used it a lot at first, but then I got distracted by writing...then editing...then writing some more (all for work -- not fun, unfortunately) ... and *almost forgot the site existed. :/
But I've finished about the tenth revision of my first full-length UF and I wanted to come back here and see what's going on in the genre and what people are looking for.
Plus I just get addicted to social networking and this is a better site than most to become addicted to =D

I did a quick search on inkmesh.com and all of these are available digitally between $6 and $9."
I keep meaning to get an e-reader of some sort. It never even occured to me to check for digital versions of these. That's a really good idea tho. :)
