I prefer UF too. I like some romance in what I read, but I much prefer it to be a subplot rather than the focus.
Which UF authors do you read? I did a quick compare books but didn't see anything we have in common.

I read a lot of horror as I know I'm not getting romance so, King, Koontz (his older stuff), Lumley, Levin, Kenyon (as in Nate not Sherryl, Harris (Thomas and Charlene, de Lint, Gaiman...The stuff I write is more thriller with fantasy elements, although I just finished a horror novel.

I love Jim Butcher to death, but I highly recommend not trying to read all of his books in one go. It takes him until about book 5 or 6 to figure out how to give people background information without repeating it exactly the same way in the beginning of every book.

Wow! I'm impressed! And jealous.

I just joined the site and am looking forward to talking about UF with some like minded people, and look forward to get to know you all!
Hi I'm Steph! I'm 27 and I from Chicago, Yeah any Sox fans out there!!!! lol. I love reading, sports, photography, cooking, playing video games. Some of my favorite authors are Rachel Caine, Rachel Vincent, Patricia Briggs, Jim Butcher, Kim Harrison, Richelle Mead and many others. I have that same tendency Emmit. I have five books waiting to be read. lol.

i absolutely adore UF, and have since i read - and fell in love with - mercedes lackeys diana tregarde books when i was in sixth grade. i love fantasy, high, urban, whatever. i have been reading more UF and PNR than anything else these days but i love it all.
i use goodreads to keep track of what i am reading and to find new authors and books. i am a lousy participant in forums because i tend to forget about things and get caught up in the day-to-day house and kid wrangling but i try :)
i'm currently working on CE Murphy's walker papers books, hunting ground, and practical demonkeeping. my darling husband got me a sony reader for a combo mother day/birthday gift and now i have a years worth of reading sitting on it and taunting me. i <3 books, so very much.

I left home and went to an Art School in Atlanta. By my last year, everyone at the school, and all the professors and even the Den considered me the best student there. One of my professors pulled me off to the side, and told me whatever ‘IT’ is, I have an abundance of it. When I graduated I thought I would write a great novel that everyone would love, get a book deal, and start my life as a professional writer.
The real world had other ideas for me. I got rejection letter after rejection letter. I wrote more than one book, and each book got even more rejections. I finally got a real job, but had to leave it after a year to take care of my mother. I moved in with my brother also, but after my mother got even sicker I had to move back home with my mother and my grandmother. So there I sat, the guy with IT, sleeping on his grandmother’s couch unemployed and getting rejection letters.
It got to a point that I started doubting myself. I had one of those days, where I went for a walk thinking what in the hell am I going to do. I couldn’t see myself working a 9 to 5, and I was tired of writing. Actually, I couldn’t write anymore. I used to sit in front of my computer and effortlessly flow from one medium to another. I’d write a little on an Urban fantasy novel, then jump into a YA novel, then dive into a screenplay, knock out a few poems, and just before going to sleep, write a few scenes in my TV pilot. All of that went away.
I couldn’t write for a long time. My mom got better, but I drifted deeper into depression. All I’ve wanted to do was create stories. All I’d heard my entire life was how talented I am. And yet there I was on my grandmother’s couch.
I spent a few years trying to figure out what was I going to do with my life. And then I fell back in love with the first true passion of my life... vampires. I read Touch the Dark by Karen Chance and the spark was re-ignited. I needed to tell a story. I needed to write. So, I sat in front of my computer for the first time in years, with Untitled Word Document staring back at me, and began to type.
When I finished, I had a manuscript called Fallen Rose. I sent out queries, and got more rejections. Then one day I went over to my cousin’s house, and he introduced me to a TV show called Carnivàle. I went home, and Fallen Rose changed from being about vampires, to beings I came up with during the car ride home. Fallen Rose... became Three Seeds. And I guess the rest I shall see.
A part of me feels it might be for the best that Three Seeds didn’t get picked up by a major publishing company. I lost all my confidence during those years after school. Working with a small press publishing house is helping me find that guy I used to be, but grounded in reality.
Wow, I just gave basically my entire life story! And oh yeah, today is my birthday!

I'm Anthony, a 39 year-old guy from Tulsa who is an avid reader of anything in print. From historical fiction, to biographies, to sci-fi/fantasy, to urban fantasy....and all places in between. Heck I'll even read romance if the book has been recommended to me.
I think that if someone has spent their time and effort to put words to paper and create something uniquely theirs it's an honor to get the chance to read what they have to say. Some books hold me from the first page, while others don't grab or hold my attention at all, but I go into each with an open mind.
I just want to commend all of the writers out there for sticking with it. If you write it, I guarantee someone out there like me will read it.

I've recently started reading Urban Fantasy. Started with Neil Gaiman's "American Gods," and moved on to Jim Butcher and Patricia Briggs. I like the story possibilities that Urban Fantasy provide. Something in the stories seem to speak to me. I also, like these same stories on TV: some examples are; Sci Fi Channel's Sanctuary, and Warehouse 13. I also watched Buffy and Angel during their runs as well.
I'm mostly looking for new authors and to discuss the ones I've read

I love Reading Urban Fantasy! I noticed a few of you have read Jim Butcher...I love his Harry Dresden series. I am going to start on book #9 tonight after work. My favorite authors are Patricia Briggs, Jenifer Falon, Kim Harrison, Charlaine Harris,Rachel Caine, Richelle Mead and so many more (I just can't think of them right now). I am always looking for new authors to read.

I'm 23 and fairly newlywed, living in rural Georgia. I have a degree in English (worthless) and work as a veterinary technician for a selective admission shelter. As such, I injured some ligaments in my wrist about a month ago and have been out on worker's comp since, waiting for doctor appointments and generally killing time until they figure out what exactly needs to be done (sorry, it's all been very frustrating.) Anyhoo, all this time off has given me an even greater chance to read...
I've always been a very, very fast reader, which most of the time seems like more of a curse than a blessing. For example, I bought 7 new books on Saturday and have already read four of them. I should utilize Amazon and the like more often, but I don't like to wait...thankfully there's a used bookstore that also sells new releases 25% off list price just down the road...
Anyway, I have broad tastes, but mostly stick to PNR/UF these days, with some straight fantasy thrown in if I find the right book.
Some of my favorite authors include Patricia Briggs, Kim Harrison, Mike Carey, Karen Marie Moning...and on.
There's some really great discussion here, and I look forward to spending some of my empty hours with you all. :-)

I'm Julia. I live in Upstate New York, about an hour from Albany. I'm a teacher of special education, mostly HS age kids, that is, when I'm working, which I'm not now. What I'm doing is reading. (Oh! I also do community theater.) I read just about everything: but my favorites are science fiction, fantasy, horror-- and a lot of ya. I've been reading uf for about 15 years, maybe 20.
My first and still one of my faves is Charles de Lint. My first was Memory & Dream, another good place to start is the novel Someplace to Be Flying, or the book of short stories, Moonlight and Vines.

Another favorite who I don't think has been mentioned often here is Emma Bull. War for the Oaks, IMO, should be read by all who consider themselves UF fans. Also very good is the very unusual Territory, but it's not set in a contmporary city, but Tombstone, AZ.
I am a big fan of Jim Butcher, of both his series!. Patricia Briggs, I've read both her werewolf series, but not all of her others. Last week I read & loved Dog Days by John Levitt and I'm looking forward to the others in that series. Kelley Armstong has two related series going that I'm enjoying. I quite like Charlaine Harris & Allan Ball's Sookie Stackhouse series. I read a bunch of Laurell K Hamiltion's Anita Blake, but I got over her.
I used to get waaay too many of my books from the new bookstores, but I'm using the library a lot and PBS.

Dave

Thanks! I just picked up the third one today at my local half-price books and was really happy to find it. I just started the second one, and can already tell it's going to be really good.

I have been on Goodreads for a little while. I found it from reading a forum on LiveJournal. I started reading UF and PNR when I started the Twilight series. I just had to see what all the hype was about and haven't looked back since. Before that I was a romance reader of authors like Nora Roberts. My husband doesn't like me reading so much because it's taking time away from the family, but he thinks it's ok to go out riding the motorcycle all the time when weather permits. Funny how that goes.
Currently I am reading the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning and I love it! I am in the middle of 4 series' waiting on the next books to be out. Some of my favorites, so far, are the Mercedes Thompson series, House of Night series, Vampire Academy series, Evermore series, and of course the Fever series. I'm looking forward to reading the Highlander series, Riley Jenson series, Midnight Breed series, Morganville Vampire series, Night Huntress series, Meredith Gentry series, and the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I have a lot of reading to do.
I'm so happy to read about all of you and look forward to reading your reviews and discussing some books.

No offense meant, but I think that's pretty unfair of your husband. We all need something than family to immerse ourselves in. Otherwise we'd all go crazy. :)

My husband is the same way... he's not a reader and just doesn't understand the appeal. We're both in to football and NASCAR and those two things take up SO much of his time. Trying to have a conversation on Football Sunday is near impossible. I get "shushed" a lot. :)

I've been married so long my husband doesn't say anything about my reading anymore. He was surprised when I took it back up, tho, as when we met and for a few years after we were married I didn't read even tho I was a voracious reader as a kid. I love the Evermore books, too, along with the Mercy Thompson books. Hated the first House of Night book, but am going to give the series one more shot. Hope you like the Morganville Vamps! One of my favorite series!

Also, a good place to find reputable breeders is www.faunaclassifieds.com. They have a board called the BOI and you can search through different breeders so you can avoid scammers, which I fell for when I first got into reptiles. The BOI has since saved me a lot of grief and money. Most of mine I got from there and most of the breeders are very helpful. Another good place is www.kingsnake.com but I would still check out the BOI for the seller before buying anything.

Hi! My name is Dawn and I just joined this group looking for ideas to fill my new obsession. I just was reading books and didn't realize all the names for genres that are out there.
I am 51, fell in love with science fiction in 4th grade when I read Robert Heinlein's Red Planet. Always loved Sci-Fi, then started reading a lot of fantasy. Recently I found Laurel K. Hamilton and Charlaine Harris, and from there fell in to some PNR this is what I call "bubble gum for the eyeballs" quick, mindless, easy reads that take me somewhere else and make me forget about real life for a while.
I am really jealous of all of you that write. There was a time that I thought I would get there one day, but work and raising kids never left enough time - and I guess I must love reading more since when I do get time, that's what I do.
I am married; 3 kids, youngest just left for college, middle also in college. Just when the house was getting quiet the eldest has returned home with a three-year-old in tow. My daughter was diagnosed with ovarian cancer this summer and has moved home so we can help care for her son while she goes through the surgeries (finished now) and chemo (just started).
Anyway that means that I really need my escape and you will find my nose in a book as soon as the little ankle bitter goes to sleep. - Oh and we just have one pet - a rabbit, who doesn't come in the house very much anymore since he really doesn't appreciate being hunted by a little guy and his Grampy.

Thanks Tif, I'll go take a look. Who knows maybe the hunny will go for it this time.
Welcome all!!

I joined goodreads a few weeks ago but never got to introduce myself. My name is Valerie and I am turning 30 pretty soon. I'm from Quebec, Canada so you'll notice that my english writing skills are not so good but there is nothing like practice.
I do not have kids yet save for a cat almost as demanding as a dog (maybe she was one in a previous life or something).
I was never a reader aside from Anne Rice vampire chronicle a few years back. All this changed last year, I have a lot of catching up to do.
I am looking for a new serie to sink my interest into. I am going to start a list of things I really liked and maybe if someone can suggest something (sorry it is a long list)
Series:Anita Blake, Black Dagger Brotherhood (yum), Immortal after Dark (so funny), Riley Jensen (hot), Mercy thompson, Alpha&Omega, Jaz Parks(hilarious),Night huntress, Dark Hunters, Fever series, Anna Strong, Dark days, Lords of the Underworld, Cassie Palmer (loved it), Jane Yellowrock...
As you can see I am not very original in my reading choices. This year I am trying to get into shapeshifters, demons, witches...but vampires are still it for me.
Any suggestions on dark, sexy but not self pity party books I should look for?

Have you checked out Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld? The first book is Bitten. She's got all kinds of folk in hers: werewolves, witches & sorcerers, vampires, ghosts, a necromancer, demons. She's also got a YA series set in the same 'verse; The Summoning & The Awakening are the two books in that series so far.
This week I read a delightful one: The Enchantment Emporium by Tanya Huff set in Calgary, AB about a very large family of witches, though they don't call themselves that. They are the Family, and the Aunties think they're in charge. It's funny and fun.

I'm Xy, and I'm 19, and looking for some good books in this genre, I've read a pretty scattered array of novels so it's going to be a bit hit and miss for me. But I love reading to it'll be well worth it.

Thanks Julia, I think I will revisit the serie in the near future...I did read the first two book of the women of the underworld but got sidetracked. In term of series... I usually am a compulsive serie reader, just can't put them down.
For some reason I am now going through the psy/changeling serie by Nalini Singh and I am only on the second book. I got some piled up reading to do.

Not sure if it'll be next, or a book from my TBR stack or a library book.
Julia

My name's Mike, I'm in my late 40s and I am based in the UK. I have been reading UF since picking up Neil Gaiman's Sandman and Neverwhere in the 1990s, along with other stuff: Mystery (what we call Crime), SF, classic Fantasy and anything else that takes my fancy.
I am also a UF writer, with my debut novel appearing in the UK and Aus in the next few weeks and in the US next summer. As you can appreciate, I'm pretty excited about that. Who knows, I may one day be featured as group book of the month.
In terms of reading, I am enjoying C E Murphy's Walker Papers, I'm in the middle of China Mieville: The City & The City at the moment, I read Laurell K until about book 9 or 10 and have read all the Tanya Huff: Blood Series - They're pretty cool. I like Jim Butcher (most of us do) and am a big fan of Mike Carey, who I've had the pleasure of meeting a couple of times (lovely guy).
I've been tempted into the PNR a couple of times, but it hasn't hooked me. I haven't read Twiglet and probably won't. I'm in the wrong demographic for that, I think.
I'm interested in what people recommend and, more importantly, why.

Ha. Twiglet. Ha.
That's so cool that you've met Mike Carey! I just recently have started reading him and love it!

Sorry, wasn't meaning to name drop, but we met at a con two years ago and had lunch with a mutual friend and then we met again about a month ago at a signing and he remembered me. I was very impressed that he recalled our meeting after 2 years.
He's a really nice guy, and I really enjoy his Felix Castor novels. They're sort of UF Noir without being corny. Very cool. I have signed copies.
