C.J. Brightley (cjbrightley) | 1 comments Hello! I'm new to the group and relatively new to UF. I read practically everything, but my favorites are fantasy, historical fiction, and international fiction. I'm excited about getting some great recommendations here!

I live outside DC with my husband, our young daughter, and our sheltie mix rescue dog. I'm expecting baby #2 in a couple of months. We're renovating our house, I write and consult for the government (very part-time), and I also teach karate when I'm not hugely pregnant. I also like baking too many desserts.

Antoinette Houston (ajhouston) Hi! My name's Antoinette Houston from Georgia and i'm a married mom of one boisterous boy. i love anime and manga as well as fantasy, sci-fi, paranormal,ya, and a bunch of fan-fiction type reading (inuyash/ sess and kag pairings :P). i love a wide array of music, into comics and love to watch movies. I LOVE my sims' game and pretty much have all the expansion packs and what not...to my hubby's dismay. I'm very much into Skyrim right now though, had the game for over a year now and still refuse to just beat it. i love rpgs. i enjoy getting away from real life through my imagination. i'm an avid daydreamer. and on side note i'v also just recently published my very first book! i've always loved writing. It would keep me sane and smiley. :) I'm enjoying the fact that others can now read my stuff and hope to share that with ya'll eventually.

message 906: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (goodreadscomdeborah_jay) | 1 comments Hi, I'm Deborah, fantasy, urban fantasy and SF lover - books, tv, films, I can't get enough.
I'm currently working my way through Kim Harrison's Hollows series, having devoured Richelle Meade's Succubus books and Laurell K Hamilton's Merry Gentry series. I've also started Mark Henwick's UF series by reading the prequel, Raw Deal.
I have limited reading time as I'm also a writer - one epic fantasy and one urban fantasy out so far - but good reading is a pre-requisite for good writing, so I make time.
Looking forward to finding out more about this group.

Stine | 15 comments Hi everyone! I am 19 years old (20 in may), a student from Norway. I started reading fantasy books at a early age, but started to read them in English when I turned 14. I love Urban fantasy/fantasy/paranormal romance books, and they are the reason why i stay up all night reading. I came to goodread by a recommendation from my host mom (because we both love books). By looking trough the books which have already been read, I realised I have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to the Urban fantasy world. One of my hobbies is to collect and buy books.
I am really thankful for all of the books on this site, and how people really answer your questions, and I cant wait until I finish my exams. After that, I can read the books we are supposed to read for the month, and all of the series I am behind.
Thanks for the support guys!!!

message 916: by S.W. (new)

S.W. Fairbrother (swfairbrother) Hi all,

I'm Sandra. I live in London and love fantasy, especially urban fantasy, although not PNR so much. That said, I'll read anything if it's well written. :)

I'm fairly new to Goodreads but loving it so far! I've already posted a ton of books to my To Be Read pile. >rubs hands together gleefully<

Haven (havencage) | 4 comments Hello all,
My name is Christa. I began my love of reading later in my life.I now realize I have a lot of fantastic literature to catch up on. As I've eased into this journey of escaping, I've found myself drawn to fantasy and romance most. My favorite authors so far have been Gena Showalter and Karen Marie Moning.

I love Karen Marie Moning's Fever series, Kim Harrison's Hollows series and LA Banks' Vampire Huntress Legend series. I'm sorta new to the genre so I haven't gotten close to scraping the surface of all the "good stuff" out there so I look forward to seeing what y'all are reading and hear any recommendations you might have.

message 920: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 4 comments I'm not new per se, but I don't usually post much. I'm from the Midwest and the mother of two awesome boys. We also have 2 cats and 2 dogs. I read a lot of UF, fantasy, contemporary lit, and pretty much anything I can get my hands on. My favorites right now are The Dresden Files, Mercy Thompson, Kingkiller Chronicles, Iron Druid, ASOIF, Discworld, and the Sandman graphic novels by Neil Gaiman. I'm already working on a wishlist of new-to-me books based on some great recommendations I've read on here, and I look forward to participating on the boards more!

message 921: by Kara (new)

Kara My name is Kara and I haven't posted here, though I've been on goodreads for a while. I am just more and more attracted to urban fantasy these days. I'm currently reading the Morganville series, and I am beginning to wonder if all the books have 164 pages. lol Anyway, I look forward to participating!

message 922: by Samual (new)

Samual O (neonlyts) | 1 comments ...hi.I'm Dare. I'm from Nigeria. I love reading. I listen to music a lot and i love writing. I started out with my mum's old books(my mum, God rest her beautiful soul!, read mostly horror!Robert R. McCammon, Brian Lumley)...then i started in on my brother's extensive Robert Ludlum/Fredrick Forsyth/Mario Puzo collection. When i was younger, i had this (seemingly!)unquenchable thirst for books...sadly,it was mostly(only!) fiction. I read like two to three novels a week then, now, i consider it a good month if i can tick off three novels from my "to read!" list in a month. i used to have this huge collection of novels. but then i had to start traveling a lot for work. and it wasn't easy logging a library around every time i had to move. Now i just collect ebooks. my first urban fantasy novel was Jim Butcher's "Storm Front".
I tell people i have no favorite when it comes to books, but truth be told i have never been able to turn down reading sci-fi and/or urban fantasy. And i love the continuity a series adds to a novel i like...but i hate it when i have to wait, sometimes years for a new installation.
At least i used to hate it, but then i discovered Goodreads and their recommend/similar/list that basically introduces you to authors/books quite like the ones you already know.I cant tell you how invaluable that has been to my reading life. I've discovered SO MANY book/authors i might never have otherwise even known of their existence.
The reading culture here in Nigeria is not as broad as i would have wanted. so, getting my kind of books often can be somewhat ...problematic. Still...
...okay...that should do...

message 923: by Davinia (new)

Davinia (davinianl) | 33 comments Hi, my name is Davinia. I am 31, married and a Dutchy (someone from the Netherlands) living in Belgium.
I am a great fan of UF, but also have a love for PNR, some (normal) Romance, Pure fantasy.

If I love a book, I will re-read it endlessly most of the time, and I have a re-read list a mile long. I completely massacred my reading challenge last year by reading 180 new books (and secretly re-reading almost twice that). This year I vowed to read way less... I'm already at 54 new books :S and I don't want to know the number of re-reads. It's actually quite scary as reading isn't at all my only hobby and I never have time to spare, I also get way too few hours of sleep because of all the great books :)

Ingredients that make up a good book for me are:
- strong (but not perfect) characters
- mystery
- realistic romance
- anything supernatural is always a plus

Ingredients that KILL a book for me:
- adultery
- love-triangles
- too much sex(scenes)

I joined this group in an effort to find some more nice series to add to my to read list, because I'm running out of things I really want to read. But it's getting harder and harder to find some nice new reads.

So... that's (part) of me in a nutshell. Now I'm off to search for some nice recommendations.

message 924: by Jeri (new)

Jeri Westerson | 2 comments Hi, I'm Jeri Westerson and I write a series of medieval mysteries. I've gone over to a darker side and have added urban fantasy to my list with BOOKE OF THE HIDDEN. My agent is currently shopping it and it could sure use some buzz. (I'm being told by editors that the genre is a "hard sell" these days.) What do you think? Are you looking for the next series to read? I'm honestly looking for feedback. I don't want to see this genre disappear. http://www.jeriwesterson.com/booke-of...

Yolanda Ramos (yramosseventhsentinel) | 27 comments Hi, I'm Yolanda and live in South Africa. Love all types of fantasy. Right now I'm reading The Emperor's Edge, by Lindsay Buroker and loving it.

Brittain *Needs a Nap and a Drink* (bwilliams2013) | 27 comments Hi, I'm Brittain and I am from Sweet Home Alabama. For a while, I had quit reading as much to focus on school and sports. The sports aspect of my life got diminished by an illness and while in recovery, I discovered that I adore urban fantasy and paranormal books! When I am not inside reading, I'm outside hiking, playing with the dogs or coaching soccer.

I'm obsessed with southern urban fantasy and paranormal books. The swamp lands and backwoods of the South seem like the perfect backdrop for something otherworldly to me.

message 928: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello! I'm Kiarna. Discovering this group on GR was a wonderful surprise and I thought I'd come read your book recommendations.

I've been reading non fiction for the last few years for writing research and am finally finding time to pick up fiction for pure pleasure again. UF is my favorite genre followed by SciFi (especially when the fictional world is similar to ours or is the same as ours).

I grew up on Heinlein, REH, Fritz Leiber, Tanith Lee, and Emma Bull. I'm hoping to find books by authors that are combining social justice issues and magic in ways that mirror real world practitioners from different world traditions. I'm also a comic book/manga/anime fan and love UF in those mediums.

Paranormal isn't my cup of tea but I love fantasy. Romantic fantasy is my favorite, actually. I'm relatively new to Goodreads and this is the first group I have joined. I'm excited!

Heather (archivy) Hi all :)

My name is Heather. I've been on goodreads for a while now, but I'm just now branching out into public book clubs in an effort to help find new fun and exciting books to read. I lean towards scifi, UF, dystopian, post-apocalyptic and some magic and paranormal stuff in my book choices.

Cheers!

message 933: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 28, 2014 04:36AM) (new)

I am Trevor Williams, 31, currently in the USA. I've always loved reading growing up, as well as writing stories - my earliest story (it was mostly a picture book, but with text bubbles - hey, I was seven!) was inspired by a horror movie that I saw when I was just seven - "The Blob".

In high school, I wrote a lot of poetry and short stories, alongside my running my first (and only) Dungeons & Dragons campaign, which spanned nearly two years. During college, I dabbled a bit in journalism, but found more joy in being a DJ for the local radio station.

Today, I'm working full-time writing code and generally keeping the back-end of the nonprofit I work for up and running - work I really enjoy. Alongside that, I've been speaking at various nonprofit events concerning Salesforce and its benefits for nonprofits, which has been generating quite the snowball effect in terms of opportunities.

I would love to publish a work of fiction one day, but in the meantime, I've been busy working on some fan fiction that's dominated some blocks of time in my life alongside my friends and family. I've decided to post my story here on Goodreads to get it greater exposure and to learn more from all of you!

Here's a direct link: https://www.goodreads.com/story/show/...

Feel free to leave any amount of constructive criticism! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Nica Curt (nicacurt) | 4 comments Hello. Just a quick greeting from California. My name is Nica. I'm into any storytelling format that entertains me. Books, comics, games, shows, movies, I enjoy them all. When I'm not stuck in worlds created by talented writers or artists, I work on my own writing and hope to contribute to this genre in my own way. Big fan of UF, paranormal, sci-fi, and fantasy.

Shen Hart (reviewhart) | 3 comments Good evening all, I'm Shen Hart. I'm a book reviewer and soon to be author.

I was born and raised in England but I made the move to the gorgeous city of Prague some 15 months ago. I have always been an avid reader and urban fantasy remains my favourite genre, it has so much potential. Away from reading and writing I'm a developmental editor, I suppose I'm somewhat obsessed with the written word and books! Outside of that I love horses and had 5 back in England, I rode for most of my life.

I think that about covers it!

Brittany Johnson (candybandit) | 1 comments Hello! ^-^ I'm Brittany and, sadly, too young to even by a writer :( Right now I'm writing a majorly awesome book that, I believe, is very unique :3 I'm from the good ol' USA! Fantasy is mainly the only type of books I read, but there is some exceptions. It's nice to meet y'all!

message 938: by Johnny (new)

Johnny | 6 comments Hi, I'm Johnny and I read everything. Lately, I've spent a lot of time reading Jim Butcher's Dresden Files books, books by Charlaine Harris (Southern Vampire, Lily Bard & others) & anything that strikes my interest. I joined this group sometime last year, but life & work has made me too busy to participate.

I am (since December) a retired telecom engineer and have gone back to work for my ex-employer part-time as a contractor and am finally beginning to get some time for myself again. I live in Denton, Texas which lies just about 40 miles north of downtown Dallas.

I'll wander in and out of here and hope to find some good books to read. Normally I am reading a Kindle book, listening to an audiobook when driving, and reading REAL books simultaneously, as well as reading scifi anthologies and about 2 dozen comic books monthly.
