Why was Winston so concerned if life had been better before the revolution than it was then?

Does it really matter how the life had been before the Revolution?

Winston was concerned with the Party's falsifying reality through Newspeak and editing history. He was not concerned with whether life before the revolution was better or worse, per se, but with testing yet again if the Party had been lying about it.
