Meaghan (ectophine) | 3596 comments Oh wow, 33?? That's insane, and just so much last minute work for you guys!

message 702: by Ashley W (new)

Ashley W (starfallreads1) | 6011 comments That doesn't make any sense. If you have the points then you have them. No sense setting someone up to win then taking it away. That's just mean to set them up like that. Plus it sounds like more work. It was so much easier to post as I went.

message 703: by Meaghan (new)

Meaghan (ectophine) | 3596 comments Yea that's exactly right Ashley, but I guess some people might do it. If a team thinks they're winning by a huge lead, they might be less motivated to read as much, since they think they're "safe" for the win. That can be beneficial for the team trying to catch up, but the method is definitely sneaky and mean

Well actually it does, if they had the points on the board throughout the month the other teams would know what they need to do to pass them. If they withhold then the others get a bit more relaxed think oh we have this I can watch that movie tonight or whatever.

But, that's also where the fun gets sucked out and it seems to get too competitive. The scoreboard right now looks like anyone could win so we all try our best and read to see how it will shake out then comes the massive review dump and it was all pointless.

Exactly, Carrie! And then you feel guilty for watching that Game of Thrones episode rather than finishing a book

message 706: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (boombaby13) | 4239 comments And I should add I can really sympathize with the mods on this one as it would be really impossible to come up with a fair cut off too. Saying something like 1k pages could still leave some to save up a fair few reviews but others could really read more than that in the last day and they'd be the ones penalized when it was just their normal reading.

This challenge even more so since pages can include graphic novels, poetry, etc. Same with total book count. So I will second that sympathizing.

message 708: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) That is why I'm so salty about review dumping… i've had it happen at least twice where my team got pushed into second place in the last day of the challenge… Including that 33 review dump…
I think the only solution is people being aware of themselves, aware of their posting habits, and aware of others.

message 709: by Connie (new)

Connie (sunstormsandthunderclouds) | 3978 comments It happened to me in a solo challenge, somebody did a review dump and pushed me into second place like 9 hours of the ending, and I'm not salty about it. Things happen, some situations are out of our control, and if posting reviews comes second, then that's what is going to happen. People can always post them when they have time. As long as they're posted right?

message 710: by Dannii (last edited May 24, 2016 11:15AM) (new)

Dannii Elle (danniiellereads) | 9856 comments I don't understand how it could be construed as tactical when the total, if you uploaded them over the course of a day, a week or a month, is exactly the same! I get the instance you were reffering to above is different to this one and I wasn't in that game so can't comment, but in this case I'm sure no-one has made a tactical move as it's still too early in the game. These scores can change daily. I think this thread might make people who have 'dumped' feel bad when there may have been circumstances preventing them from uploading reviews. I'm sure there was a day I uploaded 4 graphic novels and 2 novels in one day as I was super motivated to just read undistracted.

Let's just all encourage each other to read more, and while a bit of friendly competition never hurt anyone, the reason we are here is for a fun game and I think that shouldn't be forgotten.

I could also NEVER write a review on my phone. It would be typo central!! Haha.

message 711: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (boombaby13) | 4239 comments For the record when I said it was a matter of common courtesy or self awareness to keep up with reviews I also mentioned that sure there could be the rare case of someone just couldn't do it right then. In that case I'd think they'd let the mods and their team know about it such as someone said their computer had gone out. That's just life and can't be helped and we all know that.

But what is odd is that the scores are suddenly all tightened up after being so lopsided which makes people wonder if there aren't a bunch of reviews not being posted right now. Maybe, maybe not... just the idea of it being used as strategy is a bit of a turn off if that is the case and yes, that would be rude if it comes down to the last few days and thousands of pages get added all of a sudden. Feel sorry for the mods to even have to try to add all of that up and it seems a silly thing to do just to sneak a win.

message 712: by Connie (new)

Connie (sunstormsandthunderclouds) | 3978 comments But not everyone who review dumps is doing it as a strategy, and the whole idea that this discussion has had is that, review dumps are bad. They're only bad if that team isn't made aware of them, and they happen within the last two days, because I'm not going to question anyone's reasons behind doing them, this is a game. It's a challenge to make yourself read more and be proud of what you've done, not make other people feel bad because they're doing well. Reading is supposed to be fun and reactions like these take the fun out of it to be honest.

Jamie | 12271 comments Dannii wrote: "I don't understand how it could be construed as tactical when the total, if you uploaded them over the course of a day, a week or a month, is exactly the same! I get the instance you were reffering..."

We aren't referring to anything that has happened yet. We are mostly talking about people who double (or even triple plus) their points in the last 1-2 days (often time last few hours) of the challenge, yet a lot of what they turn in was read over a week prior to the posting. When they go from having posted 8 books in the first 25 days of the challenge, and in the last week suddenly post 20 books, bringing them up to 28 total books. That type of behavior. I think most of us have had days we have posted several books in one day. We've almost all had times where we didn't have the time to post a a few days or days where we just read a lot. Those are fine and shouldn't bother people I think.
You're upload example is not what I call a review dump. That isn't an instant game changer.
All we are saying is there more than likely at least 1 person is just going to do one of these crazy level dumps within this last week that is just going to make trying for the top spot pointless. Many of us hope that doesn't happen.

message 714: by Carrie (new)

Well, technically it is rough onthe mods anytime during the month. But if it truly cant be helped then its not that bad up until the end as far as scores etc. I just meant everyone should do their best to not get more than a couple behind if at all possible any month, not just right now. And thats not directed at anyone or even advice for just this month, just want people to be aware of how it affects the mods and other teams and try to do their best to keep up all the time.

Think of the times the mods are late updating and we're all wondering where the updates are. They work hard to update daily so we as particpants should do our best to keep up our end daily. :)

message 715: by [deleted user] (new)

There should be a book cap and maybe not a page cap. Like 3 books. A day.

message 716: by Meaghan (new)

Meaghan (ectophine) | 3596 comments That could work, but then some read more than that a day. Like if I was reading short books, I could get more than 3 done in a day, but then wouldn't be allowed to post them

message 717: by Abby (new)

Abby | 5404 comments Or for those who read several books at the same time and end up finishing them all on the same day. That happens to me a lot.

message 718: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah. It doesn't really matter what gets done or not. It. Just is common curtesy like someone said before. People will dump their reviews the last minute then expect the mods to hurry up and post the totals and for the mods to not miss any points while at it. This challenges have become more of strategy than a challenge. How do you challenge yourself when in the back of your mind you keep thinking "is someone gonna dump?" I for one have lost interest in the winning for that matter I keep reading because I enjoy it and keep joining because I love the interaction and to be honest it challenges me every month to read more the only problem I feel bad is that it might hurt my team in the end if I read more because more is expected of me as a team member e.g. Adjusted points.

It's crazy how you think the scores are all close when they're all like 30 points away from each other up in serious. That's so not close at all!

Look back to earlier in the month, for instance from May 9th...

Yeah I know but that's still like 6000 pages.

message 722: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (boombaby13) | 4239 comments Toss in a couple buddy reads and the whole team reading steadily and that's still doable easily. :)

message 723: by Meaghan (new)

Meaghan (ectophine) | 3596 comments That and our lead is by 6000 pages, it's by 2000, as the adjusted points do affect how the points go!

Sorry to bother you, but yesterday I've started Grave Memory (Alex Craft, #3) by Kalayna Price and while reading it I discovered that I had read this one before (then I checked here and I saw that I made a mistake, when I read this book I added here the fourth instead of the third). So it's a re-read, but I've read this one in 2013 I think. Can it count for may's challenge?
